It has been a good 6 weeks but we have to be very serious about how the list is managed the next 2 years especially - we might have the whip hand from a contractual POV with Pickett and CP5 seems back to his best, but Oliver has to continue to evolve in this modern game or we just have to move him on for the salary he is taking. Viney was moving to that role and it fitted him well, we can’t have them both do it, but we also must continue to move Rivers into the middle and allow Langford minutes in there.

I guess my point is that I am glad we are improving but we still have hard decisions to be made and they are made harder not easier by our good form.

Totally agree that we’re moving past the point where we can have both Oliver and Viney in the same midfield.

But it’s not Oliver who’ll find his spot in jeopardy. He can do everything Jack can do but to a higher level.

Because of everything you say about getting minutes into all those others, who all make us better, for me Jack has to re-invent himself as a pressure forward if he’s going to keep himself in the 22.

Oliver is a much better player than Jack. If he plays like he did yesterday for 23 weeks in a season he'll be A+ again. Jack isn't as damaging IMV.

But we're lucky to have both of them and will fit them in. Jack in the forward half for mine.

Your mouth to God’s ears! I hope that’s the case. If we can continue playing how we did yesterday, we’re golden.

I would not disagree. Also, Clarrie was more expansive in his role yesterday as Rivers was taking Heeney and no one else was worth tagging. So yesterday was a sight for sore eyes for his form - he still needs to evolve into having another string in his bow. Viney just has to be moved to the forward line in 2025 while we have this problem and if it doesn’t work then we can look at the situation again at the end of the year.

I guess my larger point is that we can’t carry 8% of our salary cap in a tagger. It’s just not tenable. So either he builds back his form and supplements that with run with, and occasional stints back or forward, or he’s traded to get some draft collateral, midfield minutes for the kids, and we pay a third of his wage.

Sure, I just don't think that's our plan.

I’m not as well versed in footy coaching/strategy as others but I feel like it’s been noted that the “tagging” isn’t really tagging and is instead a way to put Clarry with players/into spaces where he gets a lot of the ball and can shine, thus building back his form.

Yesterday’s 31 disposals when he’s supposedly “tagging” seems like pretty strong evidence of this being the case.

To the untrained eye, the first image appears to show Clarry expressing sheer joy but if you pan down, you will see it is sheer agony. The culprit may wish he wasn't identifiable by the thumb strapping lol.

The recent email from the club appears to have (appropriately) edited the random hand from the earlier photo 😉.

I literally said he didn’t tag against Sydney in the post you quoted.

Tag/Run with - basically someone whose first instincts is to make sure someone else does not get the footy at a contest.

There is no such thing as ‘tagging’ as meant back in the Simon Godfrey days. So it can mean ‘run with’ now.

Neither, which is why I am intimating in my posts that if his form doesn’t recover and/or he doesn’t evolve - he is going to be moved on.

Both played outstanding games yesterday. Will leave a huge hole in the side if any of them leave

The thing is, can we still carry both of them in the midfield? it's very clear that the club is trying to evolve their game and we need better ball users.

We have the old guard of JV, Clarry and Petracca. None of them is a great ball user.

JV will never leave, heart and soul of the club and probably would be willing to play in whichever position is required by the club.

Clarry and Petracca are less flexible position-wise.

Probably Petracca could work as a Forward.

I am not sure what the club will do.

Both butchered their possessions on several occasions

I reckon both will benefit by the likes of Langford and X next year, players who can run through the middle and use it better but also open more space for them.

Huh? I saw it totally different. They weren't poor by any standards but they are still nowhere near what they are capable of. Remember these guys were the best dual (trio if you count Viney). Right now, they are just middle of the road at best.

I noticed how players don't kick it to Clarry anymore. On several occasions he was unmarked and overlooked. When he did get the ball, he was rushed even when there was nobody near him. It is becoming clearer that he is bereft of any confidence. It also reconciles with the notion that he 'wants a fresh start'. If he wants to leave this year, i think it will be the best for both camps. We just have to understand we probably don't get much change out of any deal right now.

I just think some people were watching some other game in relation to comments on Petracca & Oliver in particular.

I think that in the last 3 weeks we have seen a turnaround in Clarrie's degree of involvement. I feel he is now gaining confidence in himself (and changing his role). He is playing with a lost more zest than earlier. Well done Goody and the whole support mob .

Trac is nearly back . He has had to shown a lot of courage in coming back from his "injury".

There is passion back !!!

Langdon seemed to be tagging Daicos yesterday in the classic sense.

Outstanding? Not near it. Both continue to butcher the ball in critical moments, you just can't afford to have 2 (3 including Viney) of your primary mids you can't hit a target. It's a tough situation but we have to get the midfield balance right moving forward or we won't see another flag with this group. Petracca is a must keep and Viney is older with a ridiculously long contract so Oliver's the one for mine who may be moved on. A club like Essendon or maybe the Saints would benefit from his ball winning ability I think.

Clarry for our 2025 first round pick straight swap?

Clarry showed great desperation. He extracted the ball on a number of occasions yesterday like the Clarry of old. He's definitely on the right track again

However, he is not and never will be a good user

Compare Trac to Pendles or Sidebottom. He's brilliant at getting his hands on the ball but panics way too easily for an elite footballer. and he's not a good user either

Pendlebury is an amazing player. time seems to stand still when he has the ball in his hands.

Both hoof it forward on a constant basis with indiscriminate kicks that end up bearing very little reward

We're paying them both elite money for B grade output

Matchwinners? They are both a long way off and the other issue is that other players follow suit with the long bombs to the opposition

So both either can't adhere to team rules or they don't want to. Either way, they are both costing the team wins

We need to rebuild. Everyone bar Kozzie is tradeable if the offer is commensurable.

We just lost to the runaway leader of the competition by a point in a game where we were the better side for long periods of time.

Is there stuff we need to work on to get better? Absolutely no doubt.

But posts like this are just hyperbolic nonsense.

Can be - but is the truth a tad damning to realise?

2021 was amazing

Footy moves on

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
