Form Guide - Rnds 7 to 11 vs Rnds 12 to 17

Probably best to look away if you don't want to spoil your weekend. What a route. Bar May, Sparrow & Fritta, the rest went in to free fall over the last 5 weeks in comparison to Rnds 7 to 11 and ended up in the bin.

Maybe the team all had a dose of influenza A, or B at the same time. Maybe covid! Even Max has dropped away massively. No wonder we are 5 - zip through that period.

It would take a miracle to retrieve this for our match tomorrow vs North. My guess is there's a high probability of another 6 to 10 goal loss coming up. Just too many way off their best for whatever reason in the last five weeks. We will need a minor miracle from Lucifer to get over the line me thinks. Maybe they'll pull something out for Dicko.

Transition stats measure how often chains result in a score or an inside 50. Chains include all kick-in chains, all clearances, and intercepts with at least one disposal in the chain.

  • Chain To Score %: proportion of all chains that resulted in a score.

  • Defensive 50 To Forward 50 %: proportion of all chains starting in the defensive 50 that resulted in an inside 50.

  • Defensive 50 To Score %: proportion of all chains starting in the defensive 50 that resulted in a score.

  • Defensive Half To Forward 50 %: proportion of all chains starting in the defensive half that resulted in an inside 50.

  • Defensive Half To Score %: proportion of all chains starting in the defensive half that resulted in a score.

  • xWin %: win probability based on expected scores.

  • Swing: difference between expected margin and actual margin.

  • xScore: total expected score from all shots taken.

  • +/-: total score above or below expected score.

  • xSc. / Shot: average expected score per shot. This represents the average shot difficulty.

  • Shot Rating: average score above or below expected score per shot at goal.

Notes: Expected scores are calculated by Wheelo Ratings. Each shot at goal is assigned an expected score based on the distance from goal, shot angle, and type of shot (e.g. set shot, general play following contested possession, general play following uncontested possession, ground kick, etc) as a proxy for pressure. The model does not take into account factors like the player, whether the ball was kicked with their preferred or non-preferred foot, and pressure on the player when taking the shot. Rushed behinds are excluded from actual and expected scores.

Interesting, thanks so much as always for posting.

Player ratings confirm my belief that Trac went at 0%by foot in the first half.

We also lost centre bounce scores to a second rate midfield.

Jake lever rating is low, and he looks slow on the park since his return.

Lots to improve from here if we want this new system to work in 2026

Edited by buck_nekkid

Thanks Wheelo, how good to see Fritta our top rated player playing 91% game time followed by Milkshake and including Chin, Harv and Rooey in our top 7. 👍😁

Has anyone been keeping an eye on pressure ratings for us as well as across the league? It seems a no brainer that the PR would have a direct correlation to on-field success, as this is surely a great indicator of “finals like intensity”. But is this necessarily the case?

Our pressure looked pretty poor to the eye yesterday, it averaged out at 176 I think but at times was in the 150s. I know we’ve had some of the lowest pressure ratings in the league this year so I’d be interested to hear how important it actually is from someone who knows what they’re talking about.

it just seems to me that it’s an easy area of improvement if that’s what’s needed. Improving marking, kicking, decision making takes hours of practice, but improving pressure should be like flicking a switch as it’s mostly mindset and, of course, fitness (which everyone should have at AFL level.) Am I missing something? Surely this should be a non negotiable in order for us to improve?

@WheeloRatings 19 marks inside 50.

how does that compare to the rest of the season??

That was the highest for Melbourne this season. We had 16 against West Coast, Brisbane and Sydney, and 14 against St Kilda. We have only had 19+ on six occasions since the start of 2021 (2x in 2021, 2x in 2023, and 1x in 2024).

Round 18, 2025 MCG - Demons vs Kangaroos

A solid win to mark Goody's 200th. No doubt Dicko would've been very happy with that result.

Finally something that resembled a four quarter performance. Lots of one percenters and team oriented moments.

Keeping in mind this was against a very young team with 11 rookies running around. Also our team score only matched that of last season which was obviously nothing to write home about.

A number of positives though regardless....

First time i can recall Fritta playing selfless team / percentage footy for what seemed like a long time. I'd be showing the positives in this regard over and over for the next two reviews. Let that side sink in as a "please bring more of this every week" reinforcement!

Not sure if Salo was my No.1 but he had a fair bit of it with zero turnovers which has pushed him up the rung here.

Young Langers break out game coming in at No.2 !!??

Where would we be without Koz and the Milk man. That was one for the ages from Jake the Snake. I'm not sure i've seen a better game from him in the red & blue outside of his come back assists vs the Blues a few seasons back and possibly moments of brilliance from the 2018 finals.

Vintage Macca as well! As to why he was left out in the first place, who knows. But he certainly makes a huge difference. Would love to know the W/L ratio when he's been in/out of the team this season.

I would hope this to be the case most weeks DZ. But yes, our top 6 rating (up nearly 18% vs the season 2024 average) def supports the fact that many of our top line experienced boys excelled on the day.

The stuff that can turn a 50/50 or worse on the day into a W!

Good to see Clarry in 2nd spot, returning to the Clarry of old. Hopefully he can continue his resurrection into next season.

Yes hopefully RB. Watching some of his highlights from the club in celebration of his 200th, he is in beast mode in many of those.

Alot of that no doubt general body strength but much of it is the drive he has out of stoppage plus agility to twist and side step his way through traffic.

Can he re-discover that latter part once more? It was probably a youthful thing as much as strength and leg power. Let's hope he can get back to somewhere near his best with another seriously intense pre-season eh.

Looking at his prior season player ratings i have going back to 2018, he has a power of work to do if he's to make it back to anywhere near his B&F years. Noting that Season 2020 was the compromised Covid shortened season with shortened match time...

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
