Round 9, 2025 Optus Stadium - Eagles vs Demons

The Captain does it again. Without him, Langford and the continual holding up of our backline i reckon we would have been smashed by 80+ points today.

Looking at it from a glass half full, are we on the cusp and about to turn things around? Unless we have almost all of our best 22 players on the park most weeks... highly unlikely. The same could be said of most teams but we are just too far off our best once we drop a few key players. The depth just isn't there.

And the forward line plus methods going in. Enough has been said about those woes to write a Demonic version of Tolstoy's War & Peace.

Our Team Rating over 6% off that of our average 2024 Team Rating against a pretty middle of the rung to above average side (imo) is a pretty horrid outcome.

Their top 6 well ahead of ours and their bottom 6 trumping ours as well.

We will need all of Vines, Melk & Petty back in to have any chance of avoiding a massacre against the Lions next week and posting a respectable score.

Thanks DD even though they had the three top rated players and six of the top eight which probably echoes their great last quarter we were pretty even across the board barring our bottom six. We fell away badly in the last fifteen minutes after leading all major kpi’s for the rest of the game. No doubt our poor kicking saps a lot of energy and that really showed when they slammed on the first three goals in the last and got their tails up.

It was the conplete antithesis of a forward half master class DZ. We are our own worst enemy.

Our matches against anyone but the worst rated teams in the conp are awfully predictable now.

Match or better the oppo in almost all key areas of the game until three quarter time or thereabouts.

Almost all players, bar a few in rare patches, will butcher the use of the ball coming inside 50, bomb the ball in or kick it in in panic. The ball will either rebound straight out and the oppo will transition quite easily from arc to arc for a shot at goal. Or if we do make a rare connection, we will miss about 2/3rds of our shots at goal.

By the time the 4th quarter comes around we are almost spent and can't get anything going as we watch the oppo run amok out of the middle and off HB kicking a number of relatively easy goals for the sealer (or worse if we've blown up earlier in the match against the top rated clubs).

Pretty much that in a nut shell (with a few variations and some success against shizen teams) since the 2022 finals. Nearly 2.5 seasons now.

That's probably our finest win since we put together two on the trot against the Crows and Power in consecutive weeks in Adelaide in 2024.

Our Team Rating just below theirs by 2%. Our Top 6 not quite at their level where they took the chocies by nearly 7%. However, it was our bottom 6 this time around, where we won the ratings battle by 29%.

Big Maxy does it yet again, just ahead of Kozzy. Great games from both imv and Kozzy's second highest Player Rating for the season behind his outstanding game vs Freo in Rnd 6 (5.55).

Tracc beating his 2024 form in two of the last three weeks. Is he finally over the recovery / AFL fitness - form hump?

Clarry just pipping Neale in the head to head stakes! A win's a win. I don't think there was a tight clamp down here though as both players posted very respectable ratings and both finished in their respective top 5 players (5th x 2!).

Melky a very welcome return. Amazing what a difference an injection of class, experience and genuine forward craft can have on a team and the result. Well managed by Goodwin & Co. A big tick here

What happened to Windsor in this game. I didn't think he was stone motherless last but he's posted the worst Player Rating. Do i need to re-check my numbers maybe? What do others think of his game? Carrying a niggle or something?

Most would agree that's as balanced of a team we've had out on the field all year...

The most interesting stat for mine is Petracca 94 percent of cba. Huge bump. Clearly a statement. He fumbled a bit but he was fantastic and looked incredibly fiit Oliver high. Pickett high. Rivers got lots of looks and was effective (player rating BOG). We are just a chance to beat anyone with cp5 being in the centre.

So how does JV make this centre square balance better. Maybe Oliver should get the tagging role again, it makes him accountable and he's actually really good at it. He didnt give a free kick away and totally blanked Neale's effectiveness. Oliver had 5. Neale had 4. He kept lNewcombe to 19 touches last week. Who will get Heeney. Warner is tough to tag, he's a bit like Trac.

Seemed like a lot of the time the ball was moving so quickly pressure from either side was difficult to apply. When in and around a contest, our pressure ‘seemed’ pretty good.

Honestly I didn't expect Trac to be playing that many minutes through the middle just yet. It was very encouraging and I know there will be games where we still need him to split but it was a big takeaway.

I like that while they had us on transition (d50 to i50% 27.9% to their 41.2% - a 13% differential) they only converted those to scores 16.5% vs our 13.1% - a 3.4% differential.

Big win for our back 6, whether that’s sustainable I don’t know. You’d obviously like to shut down the transition earlier in the chain..

Thanks DD although they’re best rated higher than ours we batted deep, even Sharp & Fritta combined for a 2.9. Some really good signs and I loved the way that we hunted them and used their turn overs to spread and run in the second half. Great game to watch and how good was Goody and Chocko on the bench, directing, guiding and pushing the boys all game through.
