How many people honestly knew who our CEO was until this week? It's been a faceless role this year.

How many other clubs wait for this long for a new CEO to merely start the job?

CEO is the most important job off field within the Club.

Paul has obviously been headhunted by the MFC, and has said words to the effect…

“yes i will do it, but let me finish the project i am currently working on”

I have no problem with that, The Board obviously rate his credentials highly, so let David be the CEO for a few more months

If there is a crisis that must be dealt with Guerra will be in the loop

How did the board not brief Guerra before going on Footy Classified last night?

Either Caulfield has hit a major snag (read it's potentially over) and he was briefed on that, which is why he was non-committal on Caulfield, or he wasn't briefed and allowed Eddie and Hird to push Port Melbourne and even Waverley without major rebuttal.

Think back to when PJ appeared on these shows. He'd immediately pit you at ease by calling a spade a spade and nipping the wrong messages in the bud.

I have doubts on Caulfield right now. I think the Mount Scopus Building will take a long time and we are down the pecking order

Maybe Guerra will change that dynamic, we will find out

So...we have a President who will take up his role sometime down the track when he's back from holidays and now a CEO who will take up his sometime around September when he finishes a current commitment.

How are the optics on this?

Let alone the practicalities.

Doesn't seem like a lot of urgency at the club.

He was approached a month ago. Saying he was headhunted makes it sound like he's a coup for the club. He certainly wasn't our first choice. Let's see if his business connections help with the home base, but surely we needed a CEO with a footy background. Not someone who tried to get on the Essendon board and couldn't manage that.

As to his business acumen, which business has he run to the scale of the Melbourne Football Club?

And members were promised 2025 was about securing permits and funding for 2027 and beyond. How can we possibly do that when they don't start until the back end of 2025?

Headhunted in the sense that he did not approach us, he was busy at The Chamber of Commerce, he has an unfinished project to complete…no he wasn’t first choice, but he was our final choice, which means he must have presented very well.

Sure.

He's a lobbyist for businesses and that project is a forum...

I hope his business connections can help us, because I'm not sure I understand any other skills and past experience that he's bringing to the role.

what are you talking about "they don't start until the back end of 2025"?

Pert has been working on it full time all year

Just because he doesn't provide weekly updates to the public doesn't mean things aren't happening

Why do we need a CEO with a Footy Background?

A highly credentialed Business background would seem more desirable, the Football side of things can be learnt fairly quickly with the right advisors

His CV is pretty strong

Again, what's this highly credentialed business background you talk of? You avoided my earlier question. Which business as Guerra run that is of the size of the Melbourne Football Club? A business lobby group is not apt...

he has a contract for that specifically. have you heard his contract has been cancelled?

if you really want more info why not send the club and pert an email (cc pl, of course)

This smells of another poorly managed appointment. I am not feeling enthusiastic about it much at all. What new CEO needs a 4 month notice period from their current employer? Give me a spell.

We needed someone to hit the ground running and spend most of the season getting up to speed.

It’s not out of the norm exec level roles have at least a six month notice period. If we hadn’t spent six something months stuffing about with the hiring process this wouldn’t be so much of an issue

You seem to know this as fact. Your argument seems to think you're just guessing more then anything.

From what I have read froma number of reports now, Perts contract finished up at the end of last year.

His ceo contract did. He was given a new contract as a consultant to continue to drive the caulfield project

this was all in the press at the time

AI Overview

Gary Pert, the former CEO of the Melbourne Football Club, is involved in a consulting role related to the development of the club's new training and administrative base at Caulfield Racecourse. This project aims to create a permanent home for the club, including training ovals, sporting fields, and administrative headquarters, while also offering community access. Pert's consulting work focuses on the feasibility study and ensuring the project aligns with the club's vision and the needs of the community.

Key aspects of Gary Pert's role in the project:

  • Consulting role:

After stepping down as CEO, Pert is retained in a consulting capacity to guide the project.

Looks like we’re going to disagree again, and to think I tend to always agree regarding your football knowledge. Anyway, he’s run several businesses as big or bigger than Melbourne including one that was part of a worldwide organisation. Business is business, there’s commonalities between all of them from a CEO standpoint. He’ll no doubt be given a brief. Let’s face it his most important job is securing Caulfield. If he pulls that off he’ll achieve, along with those who began the push, what no other club official has managed in over 50 years. Give him his chance.

How about high level involvement at Motorola and Vodafone for starters, they are a good sample size Adam, look him up he has a proven record.

He’s still involved in securing Caulfield.

Christ the negativity on this site astounds me. It's hard reading here these days.

Guerra is a fine appointment. It's a massive positive we finally have a CEO after being rudderless since last year. We have a CEO we great business background and the strongest possible ties to the racing industry while we surprise surprise try to lock Caulfield in as our clubs home for the future.

A club CEO doesn't need football experience to be good at the job. He should have nothing to do with the footy aspects of the club and should be focused on enabling success through off field and business. He has footy admin and experts for the on field stuff, and if they can't deliver then we get new ones. Just look at Pert getting involved in footy list related decisions and how that went for us since late last year...

This is a positive for the club. It's sad to see people on here vomiting up tish and hurling negativity at the club endlessly. I thought we were supporters not detractors?

It's not messy at all. I really don't understand posters concerns with any of this tbh.

The Chamber has just advised that "they have commenced a selection process for Paul's replacement, with Paul remaining in the role until after 14WCC in September".

I am aware of that, doesn't make it messy though.

We would've been well aware of his timelines for resigning from his current role.

He's an existing CEO at an organisation outside of the AFL, they would likely have clauses of up to 6 months for notice of resignation.

Bit different if he was an existing AFL club CEO, as they would then often be put on 'gardening' leave so as not to have a conflict of interest.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
