He reminds me of early half forward Sidebottom but doesn’t have the same overhead ability which has always been a crucial bonus factor in Steele’s game no matter what position he plays but has helped him excel on the wing even with no pace. Plus Sidebottom has elite endurance.

I also feel like Sidebottom would’ve played a lot more of his career as a permanent mid if not for Pendles, but it was better to have Pendles inside and Sidey outside for team balance.

Pretty high. Because I really dislike the way we (generally) kick the ball to our forwards, and even though "Gryan Miers for pick 9" sounds unpalatable at least you're getting a really good inside 50 deliverer. 

Improving our ball movement ahead of centre is something I think we desperately need. Game plan changes may help it. But could very good decision makers help even more? 

I'd take Charlie Spargo that touches the ball 25+ times a game at pick 9

Agree - I think DS might view the Gryan comp as a negative, but I'm a big fan and think the role he plays is vitally important in modern footy. Not sexy but worth pick 9 (probably pick 11 on draft day).

Fair enough.

Was Sidebottom an elite runner as a junior? Keep in mind Miers, who you've also compared Reid to, is an elite runner now as well.

Just wish Spargo found more of the ball. 

I think the criticisms of Murphy Reid are a little bit rough to be honest, the kid is an absolute star, his vision, hands and ability to open up the play and create scores from nothing is the best in the draft by a fair distance in my view. I would liken him a lot more to Harry Sheezel than i would Charlie Spargo.

Agree hes clearly a level above Spargo, just using him as an example given somewhat similar deficiencies

My major knock on the 2 players i think we will take (Smith and Reid) are that they're both on the smaller side, i don't really have any major concerns about either developing into really good AFL players, they're both a little bit different but they suit the modern game well. 

Everyone rates players differently, i reckon the clubs with the first 10 picks would likely have very different orders of preference

Personally I reckon it’s more that a) he needs to publish a new article for eyeballs/clicks/$ and b) he’s starting to hear some whispers about who might go where (but not enough whispers to confidently publish a phantom)

We have never really had it. I remember whinging at training in 1993 that we were so bad at putting it in front of Darren Bennett that mids should be told to aim at the 50M line. The inevitable trajectory of their kicks meant Darren would be able to get to the drop and 50 M was nothing to him.

It wasn’t so much a negative a realistic good outcome if he doesn’t play routinely in the midfield. Comparing any draft pick to a high level (fringe All Aus even) player is positive.

I just imagine they’ll want to use a pick that high on a genuine prime mover and/or a forward who wins contests as well as creates for others. If they pick Reid I can already picture Jase Taylor in his straight forward style saying he’ll start forward but he’s a midfielder.

And I expect the footy department want Spargo back to his best, think Kolt grows in this area and wants to use Chandler’s kicking more too.

Cal will have been talking to pro recruiters ahead of his phantom draft and they will have pointed out the strengths and weaknesses of draftees that may be news to him. That will likely have influenced his rankings.

He is always clear that his rankings are separate from his phantom. They're two different things.

Oh yeah, he certainly was.

Had a 14.5 beep test and I'm sure he was top 5 in the time trial.

The same reason that club recruiting teams player rankings have also most likely changed since the season finished......

Cal would also get aot of info from player managers, ie how keen clubs were on players. Especially for the earlier picks.
