Shocking free

Holding the ball became holding the woman!

The Lions just have a better calibre of athletes than we do.

As well as more midfield depth.

We’ve defended fiercely but you need high impact forwards in these conditions.

That’s a huge chase from Zanks

That was into a BIG gust, too 👏

She operates under the wind

That Wothers shot was worth a go, she’s got a goal in her today with a bit of luck

Zanker: arm 😟

So now the wind's dropping!...

Lions too tall, connected, fast.

Can't change much of that. Need to find a way around it.

'Breeze' stronger than forecast. And all over the place.

Sadly, they didn't.

North next week. We'll do a Brisbane - of this week, not last!

Hard to see any real plan there. Just kick to contest and hope.

Bit of a lack of intensity by a few too.

Most rancid umpiring display I've yet seen.

Watch it on delay as it was 9am Perth time.  Brisbane ran harder .

But gee, how did umpires allow the blatant holding and dragging off the ball all day of our players.  Like in the second Hore left arm was being pulled behind her  when she was 5 feet from the ball trying to pick it up.  Plain as day, no free, We were constantly dragged away when they didn't have the ball or when we tried to get near it.  Shocking umpiring.

I don't know why they umpire the completely different to the men's with the same set of rules.  If it wa a men's game we would have constant free's at almost every contested ground ball.

Hard to watch, not least because the Brisbane women are close to the most unlikeable team in all of football.

I'd just like to add my name to the "What the eff was going on with holding the ball today?" gang.

Having said all that, far too good in the end. We're short a really good centre bounce midfielder.

Purcell has been a big loss.

...but apart from that it might be time for Mick to look at a few other moves.

I think Goldie is much better in defence and should go back to HB.

Campbell showed a bit as a KPF and would be good to see her settle there for a bit.

I would like to see Gillard tried in the ruck...I think she's wasted down back at the moment.

A bit more controversial but at its highest level I think the game has passed Lil by and probably Paxy as well.

Not sure where to sit Banno.

Can't just keep plugging holes with Hore.

Purcell. Facial injury

Harris. Shoulder

Pearce. Hand

all out for the season

missing from last year too … loss of West, Gay, Birch, Sherriff in the bizarre “ let’s rebuild strategy”

so that’s 7 missing from best 21 of last year !!!!

Alyssia Pisano, in (clichéd😄) post-match modesty on her first goal: 'It was just good to get on the end of it'. Not doing herself justice: her clever get/evade/pass started the chain in the pocket; then she buttered up to be in it again at the end.

And …

MELBOURNE is set to be without Aimee Mackin during the 2024 season after the Irish recruit tore her anterior cruciate ligament playing Gaelic football in Ireland this week.

Cant help injures.  I think most of the players wanted to go for different reason.

Given how we ended last year a refresh was needed.

I agree Paxy is at the tail end and should be used for specific supporting roles for the rest of the year as she doesn't have the run to compete with the younger girls anymore.

Who was really missing today was Hanks, currently not having the same impact as the last few years.  Normally very aggressive around the ball.

Yes, Purcell is the biggest loss for the team and others aren't yet stepping up to take on her role.

Reset for next week.

Brisbane worked hard to our number our girls and It looked like they brought their own umpires today.

I thought it last week too, but it looks like they play to defend first, and score second. Defensive set up is ok but when we have the ball they don’t run forward and constantly get outnumbered in the forward 50. Easy turnover and run out. It’s a territory game and we just guard the centre of the ground.

well done Banno on 50 games, but the ultimate down hill skiier. Zanker gets so down on her self she struggles to keep her head in the game. Kate can’t do it all on her own. Paxy still one of the better players, but maybe a little loose to be played in defence. B Mackin another good game as well as Goldy. A few too many injuries now makes for a potentially sour year.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
