Well, a 19 game player. Also 25 y.o.

Don't see him getting a chance.

Goodwin obviously wants players who know the System. It’s a gamble, but i can see the reasoning

Worst selection news is Andrew Stephens (umpire number 12). I'll say it now, before the bounce, an utter donkey. (Sorry quadrupeds.)

Not too fussed about about 'tactics' of the non-ruck selection, nor the result

Even if we win by 10 goals it's a mistake to expose someone as fragile as Petty & someone as valuable as JVR to bulk ruck mins

100% this.  There's just no logic to playing Petty &/or JVR in a serious ruck role when you have a 2 meter option sitting at Casey who will do roughly the same job.

And the upside is more JVR up forward with more energy as a forward and less chance of being pummelled or copping a serious knee / leg injury.

2024 will forever be known as the season of the petty obsession.

To the game..

I can see why Goodie has selected Petty as the only 'in' given the potential weather and the way we'll try and play essendon.

However, I worry for JVR, Turner and Petty going into the ruck not because they won't compete, but because of further risk to injury. Especially JVR. Petty is the opposite of the Dr durabunny so I'm expecting him to be subbed out at some point.

See what happens ey.

Bring heat and effort in the middle for the entire match and we'll trouble them. Off in that area and we'll lose the game in a quarter.

That's now your 19th post on Demonland ever, and I'd estimate 13 of them have been 'OMG I'm so oppressed'.

Join the conversation or don't, but turning up just to sulk is tedious for everyone else at the party.

All three of JVR, Petty and Disco are good marks giving us options down the line and negating Draper’s marking.

I’d give Disco the lions share of ball ups and throw ins and ask home to play hard, close and “unco”, to make Draper earn every touch with high chance of errant arm head and body clash in process.

And when Disco tires, have Petty and JVR do likewise.

Draper is not at Max level, make him earn it, frustrate him and bog him down, and our mids and kids can then beat their mids.

im excited for Saturday night.

Ths might have already been mentioned and I haven't gone back through the thread.

Would it not have been tactically smart to have Max Gawn down as 'test' for this week and keeping the extent of the injury hush hush? Just to cause a bit of havoc with Essendon's game planning.

They probably have to release injury info once official scans come in probably. But just a thought.

YES

Nothing wrong with the reasoning. Just saying I don't see a place for Fullerton from here on out. Can anyone think of a reason he might get selected at all now?

Haha.

Go and bother the fire starters Goffy.

I was posting football related content until a poster began claiming I was 'bagging' players.

And now you've quoted me as saying "omg I'm so oppressed" in 13 of my posts!

Which convo are you joining btw? This one most certainly doesn't feel like "the conversation".

I can. Saturday night goes pear shaped…

Do we think we might see Clarry hit some stoppages at pace Saturday night? It is my favourite thing to watch, but he just stands, hovering waiting for the ball to come out.

With the Grundy experiment quickly ended, MFC sought out a second ruck option and Tom Fullarton was traded in to assist Gawn.
Now not even playing at all with Gawn out injured for 3 weeks !!! wtf

If Petty didn’t come up, i think Fullarton would have played.

Fullarton might get a game if all of the following happens 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Gawn out injured

JVR out injured

Petty out injured

Tmcd out injured

and if he buys Goody a coffee or red wine at the next opportunity!!!

Why did we retain Schache as well?

Verrell aside, the other two aren’t in development mode. If they can’t fill a role when it’s clearly required, they should be delisted and make room for others who can.

This is of course not on the players themselves, but on our list management. I understand the gamble on Fullarton, but the Schache retention as well makes no sense. Especially when we had Tomlinson stay on.

It's the definition of list clogging and those with maturity will understand that's not a personal attack on these players.

You're either in development or you can be called upon. If it stays the way it is going then I don't see hope for either.

Says pretty much everything when the guy you brought in to back up Max is pipped at selection by the guy who never plays in ruck, gets hurt nearly every week at the moment and according to some on here has been 'underdone' most of the year.

Definitely not panning the selection, reseeving judgement on that one but it's pretty disappointing that we get a guy in only for there to be no trust in him at all at selection and this goes for about 4 games this year not just this one.

Williamson is the worst. We also have Nick Foot #2 and Andrew Stephens #12. Good times 😳

Not defending selection, but is this more to do with the potential for wet conditions than personnel. I think we would be seeing different selection if it was the same conditions that we saw on Sunday.
Just a hunch

Non sensical selection to me.

I'm good with Petty’s selection but not to ruck. I'd rather see Fullarton or Tomlinson sacrificed to the altar - they're both Emergencies. If we think we'd be too tall in the wet then pull Turner out. My only hope is we're doing a Chris Scott and plan a late change.

Disagree …Petty knows how to mark defensively & offensively & his marking has def improved. JVR has been capable all season of back up ruckman & it doesn’t seem to have diminished his output in any way. I’m sure the high performance team knows better than us & it’s drawing a long bow to say that Petty or JVR is at more risk of getting injured by playing in the  ruck than other areas of the ground. With Petty fit..if  we bought in Fullerton we would have to probably drop Turner. The game won’t be lost on our ruck selection…it will rely on all players doing the jobs they are given and those jobs will be plans that hair been put in place for the situation that has arisen …Max not playing.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

The media has performed a complete reversal in its coverage of the Melbourne Football Club over the past month and a half. Having endured intense criticism from all quarters in the press, which continually identified new avenues for scrutiny of every aspect, both on and off the field, and prematurely speculated about the departures of coaches, players, officials, and various employees from a club that lost its first five matches and appeared out of finals contention, the narrative has suddenly shifted to one of unbridled optimism.  The Demons have won five of their last six matches, positioning themselves just one game (and a considerable amount of percentage) outside the top eight at the halfway mark of the season. They still trail the primary contenders and remain far from assured of a finals berth.

  • REPORT: Sydney

A few weeks ago, I visited a fellow Melbourne Football Club supporter in hospital, and our conversation inevitably shifted from his health diagnosis to the well-being of our football team. Like him, Melbourne had faced challenges in recent months, but an intervention - in his case, surgery, and in the team's case, a change in game style - had brought about much improvement.  The team's professionals had altered its game style from a pedestrian and slow-moving approach, which yielded an average of merely 60 points for five winless games, to a faster and more direct style. This shift led to three consecutive wins and a strong competitive effort in the fourth game, albeit with a tired finish against Hawthorn, a strong premiership contender.  As we discussed our team's recent health improvement, I shared my observations on the changes within the team, including the refreshed style, the introduction of new young talent, such as rising stars Caleb Windsor, Harvey Langford, and Xavier Lindsay, and the rebranding of Kozzy Pickett from a small forward to a midfield machine who can still get among the goals. I also highlighted the dominance of captain Max Gawn in the ruck and the resurgence in form in a big way of midfield superstars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver.
