I was dragged into an antiques / brick-a-brac store in country Victoria (Maryborough) by my partner today. I wouldn't say that I was kicking and screaming, but I think it's fair to say that she was more keen than my good self.
Anyway, whilst browsing I discovered this book - which I was not only not aware of, but it appears to be a first edition (1958). Needless to say, I wasted no time purchasing it, and can't wait to settle in for a good read.
What it did do, though, is got me wondering if any fellow Demonlanders have made any unexpected discoveries of little gems whilst on their travels.
I'd be interested to know of the treasure trove that we have out there.

    Speaking of finds, I have been looking for a photograph of the selection committee during the 50's titled the architects or similar, would love a scan if anyone has or suggestions where.

    Not in the same league as yours @Checker Mate. I walk into Vinnies in Canberra a few months ago and there is a basket with scarfs. Down the bottom - 8 Melbourne scarfs. They are now washed and waiting to be hung up in grand final week at my local cafe in Fyshwick.

    Thanks radar, that would have been so special. In 2016 my wife and I did a cruise from Fremantle to Brissie and the ship stopped in at Milne Bay and we got to stand on the very airstrip that Bluey Truscott flew from in his Curtis Kittyhawk in 76 Squadron, it was surreal. Bluey and all members of our defence forces were so heroic driving the enemy back and forcing their re-embarkation!!!

    I do love the respect that was afforded Bluey in naming the airfield after him when it was built in '44 - the year after he died. I love equally as much that, even though the name Mungalalu (traditional name for the area) has been added, Bluey's name has been retained so that it's officially Mungalalu Truscott Airbase. Having said that, most people still refer to it simply as "Truscott".

    About a year ago in Austinmer Nsw I visited a retro/ antiques store and saw a framed picture of J Garlett in his Melbourne gear

    Didn't have any funds on me and when I went back a month later.     ( this is league country so I thought it would still be there) it was gone.

    Doh. It was a quality picture and frame of a good size as well.

    Should've been quicker like the man himself.

    Read (and have copies) of a couple of Ivan Southall books in Grade 6: To The Wild Skies", and Hill's End. Would love to get hold of a copy of this.

      Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season.
