wasn't the prediction recently that there might not be a single wa kid drafted this year?

Yes but that’s pure hyperbole, there are some rumblings here with regards to talent development needing an overhaul which it does desperately and there are some powerful footy people who want to end the job for the boys which has been occurring in the WAFC. It will happen Marc Webbs appointment as full time u/18s coach is just the start.

Bo Allan will definitely get picked up first two rounds and Urquart is that big bodied mid who a club will take a punt on. Kicking is poor but at that size and his impact around the stoppages he will be taken.

I rated Malakai Champion very highly as a14/15 year old and he was one of the best I’ve seen at that age. Still a good player but at that size I haven’t seen a development in explosive speed which he needs.

There are good players in the squad and some late development players who have stepped up like Davis, Angove and Becker. Van Der Struyf has pace and elite foot skills.

Blake Kelly is a gun and Cody Curtin (brother of Dan) and Charlie Banfield developing very quickly but they are 2025 draft.

Just IMO not enough depth to beat the other 4 sides

The usual suspects performed.  Draper. Camporeale brothers x2 . Welsh. Sam Marshall.  All are top 30.  Sulzberger also was good.

But one player who impressed me was Oliver Depaoli-Kubank (great name). Running wing mid.  Looks composed with the footy. Good pace.  Kicked well on both right a left. Scored a lovely running goal.  Reminded me of Darcy Wilson from last years championships. I’ll see how he goes but another Tassie lad to watch for.

Allies on the board after downing plucky Black Ducks

Allies 2.1 5.3 6.7 10.10 (70)

Western Australia 2.1 4.4 7.6 7.8 (50)

Standouts for the Allies were clearly Leonardo Lombard (Suns academy) and Sam Marshall (Lions academy). Both had excellent games as midfielders.

Others to watch :

* Jobe Shanahan 👍🏻 Big key forward.  Lovely kick for goal.  Good mark and agile.  Definitely a likely first round pick around 14-15.

* Oliver Depaoli-Kubank 👍🏻again liked his run through the midfield.  Skills were very good.  Lovely goal from 40 metres out.

Stat sheets has White with 6 possessions and no hit outs. Isn’t he meant to be ruck? Regardless, and underwhelming result...

...though not bad for zero TOG:

The Captain of Vic Country Toby Travaglia looked very good today.  SA Welsh and McKay were also solid.

welsh still a likely top 10 pick according to my crom mate

he thought they'd have to trade out of their first pick to 'preserve' access to him but with their season sliding away looks like they're going to landing two top ten talents

The Allies were once regarded as the “easybeats” of the national championships but after winning them last year, it’s a different story.

This weekend, the Vics join the action.

Allan, Urquhart, Boxshall and Kelly all contested mids but WAs midfield lacks that touch of class. Burke on the outside is a running machine and Hayes and Angove will give some exciting passages but Vics will have them covered although Riddle is a very talented developing ruckman

Question for anyone across this draft - where's Thomas Sims expected to go at this stage?

Averaging over 3 goals a game at Coates level, while also spending significant time in the ruck. 199cm and seems aggressive. Also appears to be a "one grabber", based on the limited footage I've come across.

A few links -

What's the story, why haven't I seen his name thrown around as a possible top 10 pick? Athletic limitations?

Similar to a few talls in the crop, waiting to see a greater body of work against the best players in the country.

To date it maybe seems like he’s bullied smaller opposition in the CTL and getting the score on the board at the Nationals will push him up. Charlie Nicholls and Jaunty Faull are kpfs in a similar position, could jump up the order by the time August rolls around.

    MORE FIERCE by Meggs

We’re back!  Winning the last three matches has recaptured our Demon spirit and, with superstar players returning from rehab, our Season 2024 dreams are not over yet.   So come along 5.05 pm Saturday afternoon to watch this Round 9 ladder-defining match at the Field of Dreams. Expect the Tigers to be fierce, but surely the Demons will be more fierce. Playing conditions are expected to be a dry 15 degrees with a typically gusty Cranbourne wind. The media opprobrium of the ill-consi

    IN FRONT by Meggs

In this must-win clash between Melbourne 11th on the ladder and St Kilda 8th, it was the Demons who were in front all day to win in a hard-fought Round 8 clash to make it three in a row to keep theit slim finals chances alive. A good crowd of enthusiastic footy families for week 2 of Pride Round had gathered.  The full pews in the well-appointed RSEA Park grandstand provided excellent viewing.   The Saints won the toss and elected to kick to the southern end favoured by a strong 2-3 g

    THE TRADING CHRONICLES 02

Part 2: Watching grass grow by Whispering Jack Critics of test cricket (and I’m not one of them) will often claim the sport is excruciatingly boring: that following a five day match is much like watching grass grow. However, the longest form of that game has nothing on the first week of the AFL trade period when it comes to inducing sleep among those in the football public who follows this process in its somnolent moments. The week gone by has been no exception. Only two player trades

    THE CAVALRY ARRIVES by Meggs

The injury plague which has beset the Demons 2024 campaign is finally starting to dissipate and with consecutive wins over GWS Giants and a 2-point nail-biter in Adelade, a sense of optimism is rising.  Some commentators are now asking whether the Dees can make finals? A huge surprise with team selection this week when it was announced that champs Olivia Purcell, Paxy Paxman and Eden Zanker would play.   Hallelujah!  The cavalry has arrived. St Kilda missed the finals last season on pe

    GOLDIE'S METTLE by Meggs

On a perfect night for football at the home of the Redlegs, Norwood Oval, it was the visiting underdogs Melbourne who led all night and hung on to prevail in a 2-point nail-biter. In the previous round St Kilda had made it a tough physical game to help restrict Adelaide from scoring and so Mick Stinear set a similar strategy for his team. To win it would require every player to do their bit on the field plus a little bit of luck.  Fifty game milestoner Sinead Goldrick epitomised
