Top efforts red and blue forever.

If i read this correctly we have 2 available senior list spots, 1 cat a rookie and 1 cat b that we could fill.

So Potentially upgrade a rookie or 2 and open more rookie spots before rookie draft or SSP or delisted FA signing x 1- 2 or just leave as is

Moniz-Wakefield had to be upgraded to a category A rookie after 3 years on the B list. We will pick Mentha as a cat b tomorrow. One category B spot left over.

Looking ahead … to the end of season 2025…potential changes

retirement… McDonald, Melksham

sitting on the edge are …potentially delistings 🔪 would include some of (or all of) … Spargo, Hore, Billings, Laurie, Fullarton, McAdam, Verrall, Sestan, Adams, Kentfield & Johnson.

I think Dees will have up to 9 list changes to add at the end of 2025.  Definitely need to upgrade list before Tassie comes in and need to be tougher and more ruthless with list spots.

Johnson was drafted barely an hour ago and you’ve already got him as a potential delisting? You need a new hobby.

not to mention a number of those blokes are contracted beyond next year🥱

Thanks, I'll add Mentha when his name gets picked

There has been some confusion as to if we need to upgrade Moniz-Wakefield to "Cat A rookie" or not, as rules changed this year, allowing for 4-5 years

I am still unsure if this means 3 years "Cat B, then 1-2 years "Cat A rookie", Or you can be 4-5 years as "Cat B Rookie"

Quote

Rookies – time on list

The AFL will introduce a trigger for an additional fourth year on the Rookie List where the Rookie has played less than ten career AFL matches, which will then apply in same way for access to an additional fifth year.  Total aggregate years on the Rookie List will be capped at five years (5.5 years for Mid-Season Rookie Draft).

Also, doing some research to find a good answer, It seems the AFL has also changing the "Cat B " size? I think it may now be 3 players,

In addition to these six rookie-listed players, each club can include up to three additional players (now referred to as Category B rookies) on its Rookie List provided the player either:

Believe you can spend up to 5 years on the rookie list but still only 3 years as a category B. So when we pick Mentha we’ll have 36 senior listed, 6 cat A rookies and 1 cat b rookie (Mentha).

hopefully our second cat b in the future can be an Irishman 😁

Maximum on the list is 44.  We can only go to 38 senior players if we don't use up the two spare rookie spots.

Can we rookie Yze today? Surely we do. There’s a player in there. A nice project.

Final list update for the year 2024!

Welcome to the football club Ricky Mentha! as a "Cat.B rookie"

I am listing Moniz-wakefield as a "Cat.A rookie" I know there is some confusion as to this, It is possible he is still a "Cat.B"

this means we have 1 position available for a "Cat.B' player (this is to be confirmed as it may actually be three "Cat B" positions now!)

OR

we have 1 "Cat A" rookie spot left (and possibly 1 "Cat B" if the AFL have indeed increased the limit to three)

Hopefully the Club will Update us at some stage as to Moniz-Wakefield's Status

Can't delist Johnson - minimum two year contract for draftees.

Can't see Spargo being delisted.  He is best 22/borderline best 22 when fit (just had a horror run).

Billings and Fullarton seem the two most likely to go from the main list.  They need a big year - Billings in particular.  With Lindsay, Langford and Sharp coming through, can't seem him in the frame for a wing/HFF role.

Melky to retire.  Campbell to retire if we have our eye on a ruck we can trade for, or if Verrall shows enough. Possibly McDonald, but I would say he gets another year on current form.

We won't delist anyone with a contract for 2026, unless its by agreement.  Only player I could see us reaching an agreement with would be McAdam if he genuinely doesn't want to play.

For the rookies, Hore would be feeling very nervous. Verrall or Kentfield are projects that need time - doubt they will be cut. AMW upgraded, possibly Brown too?

So, in summary: Billings, Fullarton, Melky most likely off the main list in 2025.   McDonald, Campbell and/or McAdam next most likely to go.  Three to six changes, not accounting for trades.  Two to four draft picks, depending on who gets upgraded.

Hore, AMW (upgraded), Brown (upgraded) off the rookie list.

That would give us plenty to work with.  No need to cut deeper, particularly if it isn't a particularly deep draft and we don't have any top picks. While its all well and good to try and position ourselves for the Tassie team, if we can't actually get access to the top talent next year, we shouldn't cut any more than we need to.

Don’t like flooding this thread as it’s great as just an information source, but does the 43 list size now mean we have a spot for ssp pick and have a few train on as tryouts?

from my understanding we have 43 out of 44 payers, and have one "Category B Rookie" spot available

but there is some uncertantity, as the AFL (and I need to confirm this) I Believe have increased the "Category B rookie"  spots from 2 to 3.

unsure if they have also increased the maximum list size to 45, or if that extra "cat.B" player comes out of the 44 max list.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Western Bulldogs

Covid prevented many Demons fans from legally witnessing the victorious 2021 AFL Grand Final cup performance between the Demons and the Bulldogs, but we all grin when remembering those magnificent seven third quarter goals.

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturday’s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFL’s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

Ten seasons. Eighteen teams. With the young talent pathway finally fully connected, Women’s Australian Rules football is building momentum and Season 2025 promises to be the best yet. In advance of Season 10, the AFL leadership has engaged in candid discussions with all clubs regarding strategies to boost attendance and expand fan bases. Concerningly, average attendances in 2024 were 2,660 fans per match, with the women’s game incurring an annual loss of approximately $50 million.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
