After the Vic metro v SA under 18 match on the weekend, I will add Murphy Reid to this midfielder list, perhaps looking that he would be around pick 20 or 21.

Dees should try to get say the eagles 2nd round 2024 pick to get him … and offer up our MFC next years 2025 first round with other pick swaps too.

The Suns have pick 20( one of Norths end of first round free hits) which they will probably be willing to trade giving they have 3 first round picks and a academy player rated in the top 10.

Luke Trainor is shaping up to be an out and out star KPD. Given where we are, he maybe available. Given our KPD stocks many on here may suggest we already have the May replacement, but im not convinced.

Big decision on what we do with our 1st Pick. Do we chase another star midfielder with our 1st pick or a KPD. The midfield stocks are pretty good here so i wonder if we trade into the first round.

It would be a juicy proposition for clubs in the bottom 8 to consider swapping our F1 as this year has shown we are vulnerable. GCS have pick 8 and 10 atm. So we may look to make a deal with GCS Pick 8 by using our F1 and Pick 38 for example.

An article about the standout players among this year’s crop of APS players.

Draft watch: The APS school footy standouts who have impressed throughout the 2024 season

Here they are in summary because it’s behind a firewall:

Tairon Ah-Mu, Haileybury College (he’s also an MFC NGA)

“The bottom-age ruckman has been in Haileybury College's best nearly every week. In addition to racking up the hit-outs, Ah-Mu can, and has, hit the scoreboard. Once he fills in his frame a bit more, he will be incredibly difficult to stop.”

Jasper Alger, Caulfield Grammar - an exciting goal kicker.

Harry Armstrong, Haileybury College - kicked 10 in his last game against Melbourne Grammar.

Levi Ashcroft, Brighton Grammar - son of Marcus and brother of Will is on his way to Brisbane.

Jesse Dattoli, Carey Grammar - impressed for Vic Metro. Gets the ball and can kick goals.

Tom Evans, Xavier College - school captain and a prolific inside midfielder.

Archer Hanegraaf, Geelong College - contested ball winner.

Lenny Hoffman, Brighton Grammar - St Kilda NGA product.

Taj Hotton, Haileybury College - brother of Ollie recently sustained an ACL injury which will keep him on the sidelines for an extended period of time.

Xavier Ivisic, Geelong Grammar - plays midfield nicely both on the inside and outside.

Ben Kennedy, Xavier College - lockdown defender from the Murray Bushrangers who can also go forward.

Doug Kerr, St Kevin's - a Collingwood NGA.

Felix Kneipp, Wesley College - a smooth-moving midfielder.

Sam Lalor, Geelong Grammar - amassed 42 disposals, 22. contested possessions and two goals in his last game against St Kevin's.

Sam Marshall, Melbourne Grammar - another Brisbane Lions Academy prospect.

Bailey McKenzie, Brighton Grammar  - consistently in the best players.

Harry O'Farrell, St Kevin's - AFL Academy plays in a key defensive position.

Riley Onley, Scotch College - contested midfielder.

Flynn Penry, Geelong Grammar - a dominant ruckman who gets plenty of the football.

Angus Phillips, St Kevin's - high possession midfielder who kicks goals.

Murphy Reid, Caulfield Grammar

“The potential no.1 pick has been a clearance beast at APS level this season. Prior to his dominant national championships, Reid was winning his fair share of possessions for Caulfield Grammar but was having his biggest say at stoppage. In one game this year, more than 50 per cent of Reid's disposals for the day were clearances.“

IMG_4474.thumb.jpeg.7442046b3ceb719a5a2a604823a690f9.jpeg

Ben Rongdit, Geelong Grammar - bottom age Cats Next Generation Academy.

River Stevens, Geelong College - son of dual North Melbourne premiership player Anthony.

Nathaniel Sulzberger, Caulfield Grammar - Tasmanian who started the APS season as one of the early bolters in this year's draft and has maintained his trajectory.

Luke Trainor, Brighton Grammar - highly rated with great football pedigree.

Miles Tyrer, Melbourne Grammar - bottom-age ruckman.

Ollie Warburton, Caulfield Grammar - classy wingman.

Archie Watt, Xavier College - midfielder who consistently hits the scoreboard.

Levi West, Carey Grammar - son of five-time All-Australian Scott West and brother of Bulldog Rhylee.

The concession to clubs livid about northern academies is that NGA bid limitations could drop away from next season.

Getting access to Tairon Ah-Mu might be a nice square up for losing Mac Andrew to GC.

A genuinely exciting ruck/fwd prospect. Would indeed be nice if we got access.

yes, but ah-mu is this season, i believe?

so not only do we miss out on another nga this year if he goes inside 40 but next year it's that much harder for us to access kalani white

mfcss holds true - when things are glum there's worse to come

Thanks for Posting. From a Caulfield point of view surprised that Retschko wasn’t mentioned as a classy wingman. Absolutely gobsmacked that Marlon Neocleous wasn’t listed. A very bottom age exciting small forward one to watch for the future.

Agreed. Retschko is definitely a draft chance

If we're looking at mids for our first pick then Langford and Lalor would be great candidates.

Assuming Smillie, O'Sullivan, Smith, Reid and Draper are out of range.

There's a lot of quality talls in this draft as well, I wouldn't be upset if we took 4-5 picks this year.

Yes a good listing, though I’m a buyer if these players are available at those picks

10-Jagga Smith… I rate him top 5

14- Christian Moraes… rate him pick 7-8

31 - Xavier Lindsay… rate him pick 15-17

36- Zak Johnson… rate him pick 19-20

41- Kade Herbert… rate him pick 25-28

thats good buying

I haven’t seen as much of the National Championships and Coates League games as I have in the past but it seems fairly clear to me that there’s one glaring difference between this year and the last.

In 2023, it was Harley Reid first and daylight next.  At the head of the following pack was Colby McKercher so North did well to snare him, although the lure of Tasmania will soon be a factor with him.

Time will tell, but I think Jason Taylor has done well to get Caleb Windsor and Koltyn Tholstrup although I felt at the time that with our draft hand, we could have tried for one more young player from the top 40 players.

By way of contrast, 2024 is far more open and there is a plethora of opinion as to who fits into the top dozen players. There are candidates from everywhere putting their hands up so having first pick in this draft won’t be as big a deal on the face of it, as last year.

For example, hard nosed midfielder Harvey Langford who appeals to me as the prototypical Jason Taylor selection and who shared the Larke Medal was ranked at only 17 by Davo-27 (see above).

The Power rankings and Phantom drafts that come out in coming months are going to be interesting.

The AFL Website has released its draft order based on current ladder position:

R1 Melb  - Pick 11

R2 Melb - Pick 38 (tied to Syd)

R3 Melb - Pick 42 (tied Saints)

R3 Melb - Pick 47 (tied to Bulldogs)

R4 Melb - Pick 67

That’s a pretty good summation @Whispering_Jack. Cal Twomey will likely release his phantom form guide this week now the Champs are done, wil be interesting reading.

I think we’re well placed to use that 2nd rd pick & two 3rd’s to pinch a first rounder from either Carlton, Brisbane or Gold Coast who all have first rd f/s or academy players coming through.

Speak to anyone in AFL circles and they will tell you Petty will again ask to be traded. That should give us some more draft capital.

If the top 40 is as deep as one people and posters think, it represents a good chance for us to pickup 3-4 players.

based on current points a bundle of 38. 42, 47 is equivalent of pick 14... so right on the money for baggers and the bears' likely first rounder

that depends on when the value cut-off for points is; last bit of speculation i saw was that it was expected to be end of third round, so after pick 54, so all those three picks will retain some value, if not as much as now

if we did those three picks for baggers first rounder i'd be curious to see if the recruitment dept would add it to our 11 and see if we can get higher again

it seems to have been our modus operandi since the advent of future picks

he can ask to his heart's content...

i personally wouldn't rule the pear out of chasing him either fwiw

premiership talls who are 24 years old, can play either end - and even pinch hit (sort of!) in the ruck - aren't dime a dozen

He's an RFA so either this year or next, the balls in our court.

Given Adelaide have a F/S at ~ 10-15, they don't need their Pick 5 so we could give them Petty, 38 and 42 (for points) in exchange for Pick 5. They could alternatively try to split #5 with GCS 8 and 9, and use one of those picks for Petts whilst holding onto a pick for points, but it requires more from Adelaide to make that work.

We are winners either way i think. Either hold onto Petts, which will be better for it in 2025 with a full pre-season or we get a top 10 pick.

I would expect Hamish Davis may climb into top 50, played midfield in WAFL colts on the weekend for the first time I believe 40 possessions 18 contested.

With previous proven scoreboard impact and at 191cm, huge tank I anticipate clubs to have more interest

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
