Good crop of youngsters there. A few names I liked this year include:-

Christian Moraes
Finn O'Sullivan
Levi Ashcroft
Jagga Smith
Harvey Langford
Josh Smillie
Tom Gross
Jesse Datolli
Isaac Kako

Thought Cooper Hynes might have gotten a gig as well but not named. A lot of small/medium mid forward types.

Only caught the last quarter and a half but the usual suspects played very well. Fairly free flowing low pressure style game

Moraes, O'Sullivan, Smith, Draper all got plenty of the ball and were probably the stand-outs in the limited time I watched. Ben Camporeale also had a stack of the ball and used it well.

Liked the work of Tom Gross while Jobe Shanahan and Josh Murphy look like decent taller prospects. Any info on Josh Murphy @dazzledavey36? i see he's a bushranger. Was marking the ball very well today.

Another compromised draft coming up perhaps with;

Ben and Lucas Camporeale, Ben probably the better of the Carlton f/s prospects on today's showing.

Welsh (Adelaide f/s) wasn't overly involved in the last half but kicked a goal from more or less a kick in turn over, showed his potential earlier in the year with his performance as a bottom ager in the champs.

Levi Aschroft, another Brisbane f/s and likely early selection while the Lions will also benefit from Sam Marshall as an Academy player who looms lile another great mid prospect.

Leonardo Lombard also showed something as a Gold Coast academy prospect.

Ricky Mentha and Clay Shadforth are a part of the NT academy, I wonder if either or both are apart of the Demons NGA zone. Haven't been able to ascertain that with a quick google so far.

Also academy or club linked today were -

Mitch Woods (Sydney)
Joel Cochrane (Sydney)
Joe Harrison (Sydney)
Tom Gillet (Brisbane)

At the moment, and very prematurely, I have next years top 5 as -

1. Finn O'Sullivan
2. Christian Moraes
3. Sid Draper
4. Levi Aschcroft (Brisbane f/s)
5. Jagga Smith

Take your point, but this year's crop was projected to be lacking midfielders from a long way out. Was all about the flankers this year.

They need to limit access to first round talent. Gold Coast getting 3 in the top 15 is ridiculous. Should be maximum of being able to match a bid once in each round in my view.

A few future stars obviously BUT again there’s the compromise of the Father/son and the AFL created academies for giants, swans , suns and the poor struggling lions

Plus what every Tassie concessions.  Brisbane and Sydney have double win FS and NGA priority access.

I think it's important to get elite talent from developing states to the clubs in those states.

Take away the points discount and enforce that the first matching pick has to be within one round ie 18 picks of the bid.  Firmly re-instate that picks must equal available list spaces. That will ensure fairer value is paid.

Carton and Lions benefit from F/S again. I’m sure there is a lost Daicos brother coming through the ranks too.

Seriously when are we going to get a top 5 F/S. So many top 8 teams have benefited of 2-3 top 10 picks in recent times. You just know when we get our turn they’ll be some sort of rule change.

Viney at pick 26 was a winner!! Just need more of his like.

Jeff White’s son may bring as much in 2 years. Kynan Brown may surprises and become a solid player too.

Yeah he was a great pick, but it doesn't compare to how much some teams have been able to benefit from the 'first access / matching' nature of F/S and academy.

26 in the academy. 5 of them are under team academy. Then 3 father sons.  That leaves 18/26 as “available”.  Harvey Langford was very good this year for Stingrays.   Strong taller mid with good left foot disposal.  Not overawed in the contest even as an underager this year.

Our 2024 picks based on the final ladder of 2023

31 (Syd)

48 (WB)

50 (St kilda - trade on draft night)

Thanks @Nascent  I think Dees will be more active next year.  But it’s going to be compromised again by academy and father son picks.

2024 has a lot of high quality mids.  I think the first 10 selections could be purely midfielders next year.
As for key defenders, Noah Mraz was a youngster at Dandenong Stingrays this year. Light frame but good height and not overawed by bigger opponents.  One to keep a watch on next year.

My early top 10 for next year

1. Finn O'Sullivan - 181cm Vic Country
2. Levi Ashcroft - 179cm Vic Metro (Lions F/S)
3. Sid Draper - 180cm South Australia
4. Josh Smillie - 194cm Vic Metro
5. Leonardo Lombard - 178cm Allies (Suns Academy)
6. Tyler Welsh - 191 cm South Australia  (Crows F/S)
7. Jagga Smith - 181cm Vic Metro
8. Christian Moraes - 182cm Vic Metro
9. Tom Gross - 182cm Vic Metro
10. Ben Camporeale - 184cm South Australia  (Carlton F/S)

This suggests that we should be looking forward to more bidding for academy and father/sons but not to the scale extent that we saw in last week’s draft.

    PODCAST: Jason Taylor Interview

I'm interviewing the Melbourne Football Club Recruitment Manager Jason Taylor early next week on the Demonland Podcast. I'll be asking him about moving up the draft order, our new recruits (both Draftees and Trades), Daniel Curtin, our recent recruits who have yet to play a senior game, who he thinks will be the next Judd McVee and more. If you have any further questions let me know below and I'll see if I can squeeze them in. I will release the podcast either Monday or Tuesday.

TOO LITTLE TOO LATE by Meggs

It was a hot afternoon at IKON where the ferocious Cats came to play, had read the manual on how to beat us and the Demons were unable to match them for the first three quarters.     With physical pressure, they took the game on with relative ease and though our resistance seemed better than the previous two weeks it was still not good enough.     Within the opening minute, Kate Hore marks within range, but her shot was a miss-kick, like a fat iron, and it kinda set a flat tone f

    TURNAROUND by Meggs

Following successive comprehensive defeats by fellow Top Four heavyweights the Demons play down a division this Sunday against the highly promising Cats.     Strangely, no games against the Cats for five seasons and now we play them twice in one season.     With the blueprint on how to defeat the Dees available on the dark web the real question is, will we crumble again under the finals pressure cooker or will we rediscover our #DemonSpirit and execute a turnaround?   Mak

THE SECRET IS OUT by Meggs

We were expecting that after last week’s comprehensive defeat by Brisbane, our coach Mick Stinear would have his charges coming out breathing finals fire. Instead, it was North who had the aggression, the numbers, who blocked our scoring avenues and rendered us impotent, unable to match the Kangas during any phase of the match.   Darren Crocker, the North coach, later highlighted that how to beat Melbourne is no secret following recent losses to Adelaide and Brisbane and now North.

CATCH EM ON THE HOP by Meggs

A sunny Sunday afternoon feast of finals footy awaits at our team’s favourite home ground, Ikon Park.  Great vibes at Princes Park where we remain undefeated from 7 matches and counting. Expect the Dees to come out strongly, sparring and outmuscling the Kangaroos in the middle.  With Paxy back firing and our gun forwards mesmerising, hopefully we catch ‘em on the hop. Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane have filled ten of the twelve Grand Final spots in AFLW history, and this dominance

    COLD AGGRESSION by Meggs

“Cold aggression”, Lions star full forward Dakota Davidson called it. Brisbane outmuscled, outran, and ultimately overwhelmed us. They certainly came to play and exorcised their 2022 grand final grudge defeating the Demons in the rematch by 25 points. Stats count and Brisbane won the key ones. Inside 50s 42 to 24, centre clearances 8 to 6, uncontested possessions 133 to 75 and 51 marks to 27. The Lions’ sustained pressure is the kind we usually bring for other teams.   There

    HOME PRIZE by Meggs

Big stakes this weekend. For the winner, will it be a Dees minor premiership and potential home grand final or will it be a Lion‘s Top Four finish and a double chance?    Huge interest circulates in the how the ladder unfolds over this weekend’s final round of the 2023 home and away season with some 10 teams vying for 8 places.     It’s AFLW Pride Week, a celebration of people from all walks of life coming together, being respected, loved and accepted. WICKED WIND by Meggs

Hang out to your hats. The strong blustery conditions made it extremely difficult for either team to execute footy skills but nonetheless an entertaining match ensured for those brave enough to venture down to Casey Fields on Saturday. Impressive Irish player Aine Tighe was a late withdrawal for Freo. Maddie Gay was also a late change, and she was replaced with 19 year-old Georgia Gall, the 6-foot ex Melbourne Stars BBL cricketer who has been impressing the coaches in scrimmage games.
