    It's actually a very old footy expression that was laughingly asked of a teammate (usually the full-forward) about how he'd prefer the footy to be delivered for a chest mark - laces in or laces out?

    "Laces out" was preferred because it was easier to mark and didn't bruise the flesh.  It essentially means a perfect kick that hits the target exactly as planned.

    I slept in, had 4 hours in the garden, followed by 4 hours to myself to do nothing but flick between Demonland and the live footy, fish 'n chips for dinner, and now a nice Heathcote region shiraz.

    Feeling good.

    And I got to watch some Bomber v Giants and see the final score.

    The English language in all its beauty does not hold enough words to describe the jubilation of seeing the Bombers annihilated. I hate them more than Greta Thunberg hates petrol cars, plastic bags and rational thinking. 

    Long may they suffer and rot.

    And now I am feeling very, very good.

    *apologies - nor do I! - my point was - it was done in a context where they would have felt it was relevant - many seasons before the current seasons, thus no idea it was a 'tight' season.

    Anyway there are a whole host of reasons why clubs have done it...

    AFL clubs sometimes sell or allocate home games to non-traditional venues for various reasons:

    1. Financial incentives: Regional centers or other states may offer financial incentives to clubs to bring AFL games to their location. This can be more profitable for the club than hosting a game at their traditional home ground, especially if they're not expecting a large attendance.

    2. Grow the fanbase: By playing in different areas, clubs can attract new fans and members.

    3. Community engagement: Clubs can strengthen ties with community groups, local clubs, and schools in the regions they visit.

    4. Partnership agreements: Some clubs have established partnerships or sponsorships with territories, such as the Northern Territory, which require them to play a certain number of games there each year.

    The Melbourne Football Club has a strong association with the Northern Territory due to their partnership agreement, made many years ago, before 2023.

      From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

    • CASEY: Gold Coast

      Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

    • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

      The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
