Terrible result for Casey today. Needed to win that one and now Top 4 virtually impossible. A bye next week and a win needed against Carlton in Round 21 to ensure Top 6. On the positive side, with the wildcard round coming in this year, the teams in 5th & 6th positions will be significantly advantaged against 7th-10th teams and, assuming they win their elimination finals, will also be advantaged against the losing qualifying finalists.

Thanks KC and all posters sounds like this one was one that we let slip away. Sad for BBB.👍💕

Moniz Wakefield, decent stats. Anyone see how he went?

According to one the commentators career best game at Casey. Since returning from injury earlier in the season has been building nicely. Difficult to see him debuting this year but after another pre-season who knows? Definitely a keeper as is Deakyn Smith. Both not afraid of contact and creative with the ball in hand.

MISSING THE POINT by KC from Casey

After conceding the first six goals, some of them through careless play against a howling wind at their home fortress, the Casey Demons seemed to have atoned for their sins by clawing back an early 38-point deficit and taking the lead at the 24-minute mark of the final term. Had the stakes not been so high, they might have been forgiven for thinking they had the game in the bag, but they missed the point.

And the point is that game is never over until it’s over. The fighting Seagulls dug deep to score a point and the winning goal against all odds to win by the narrowest of margins to deprive the reigning premiers of the opportunity of fighting for a top four placing before the finals.

Casey still sits in fifth spot but with a bye coming up, will have a fight on its hands to maintain a strategic place on the ladder under the VFL’s new final ten system.

For the visitors it was a good toss to win, and they made the most of the advantage with their early accuracy while they had the wind advantage.

For Casey, the improving Andy Moniz-Wakefield was the early hero. He slotted the team’s only goal for the opening term and kicked two more in the second when it was the Demons’ turn with the wind. The club’s Category B rookie finished with seventeen touches and played a big role in reducing the deficit at half time to just five points.

Meanwhile, the blustery conditions were troublesome for Casey’s tall forwards. None of Brodie Grundy, Ben Brown and Josh Schache managed to kick goals for the game although in the latter’s case it was not for want of trying as he took some strong marks up forward. Grundy went back to what he’s best at by going into the ruck and amassing thirty-one hit outs, ten disposals and six tackles. Rookie ruckman Will Verrall also finished with 31 hit outs and laid nine tackles in a promising performance.

The Demons pressed hard against the wind in the third quarter and did well to hold the Seagulls to three goals while managing two themselves, one to father/son prospect Kynan Brown, the other to young forward Matt Jefferson. They were primed to win at the final break but allowed two goals through to Williamstown during the term with the result a heartbreaking one-point defeat.

Luke Dunstan was prolific again with 35 possessions and nine clearances, Michael Hibberd was close behind with 32 touches and Bailey Laurie made the most of his 20 possessions and laid ten tackles and scored a goal.

Casey was again well served by Jimmy Munro who did the hard yards with his fearsome tackling (a game high 16) to go with his 26 possessions and a goal while Mitch White and George Grey worked hard in the difficult conditions.

With the bye coming up, Casey can only sit back next week, view the action while others make their move ahead of the finals. They will surely rue those last-minute lapses that saw the almost certain demise of their back-to-back premiership aspirations, missing out by a single point.

Perhaps but under the VFL’s new finals system that gives teams finishing 7 to 10 a wild card game, the Demons are at peril of finishing there if they drop another game. As it is, it’s going to be tough winning the flag from outside the top four with two interstate teams occupying positions there.

Grundy????  Form poor, choices were worse.  C’mon big fella!

Spargo was very poor. I thought he was the under 18 top up player. Twice he fell over in the first quarter with no pressure.  Gave away a silly off the ball free as well.

BBB might retire. He cannot physically play anymore.

Grundy was wasted for half the game.  He’s a ruckman NOT a key forward.  Goody might have got it horribly wrong !!!

I say that's the case. He's a good at rucking but modern footy requires a good ruckman to be able to drop back and defend and to move forward and be an option. You don't have to perfect in these roles but you do need to mark. The same reason he doesn't play as an effective forward is the same reason he doesn't perform in other roles. Grundy has soft hands and can't adequately fullfil these roles.on top of all this,  it seems by not playing as much, Max has dropped in form. The whole experience hasn't panned out the way we hoped but the upside is that the club has recognized this and made the hard calls necessary.

We were fortunate enough to have Grundy play when Max was injured and as a second ruck he's a pretty good one for sure. But on his money and reputation , I can't imagine that's a role he's going to relish and he will move on.

Realistically how far off is AMW from getting a game? Any chance before the year is out?

There's an intent about this guy that I really like.

Good call Layzie.  He’s the only player that I would even consider promoting from yesterdays game. Love to see him on the emergencies list soon. He’s hard at the footy. Loves the tackles. Loves a goal.  Still raw in some ways but is developing strongly. He played wing/Hbf/HFF as a junior but is a small forward under our structure.  Definitely a keeper and one to watch.

ANNND ANOTHER FRIGGEN BYE FOR CASEY THIS WEEK, IN THIS BASKET CASE OF A COMPETITION. For Christ sake give it the flick and play a stand alone AFL reserves comp. This is killing our development!🤮😱🙄

not what casey wants but finishing 7-10 would be best for Melbourne.

  • PREVIEW: Sydney

The two teams competing at the MCG on Sunday afternoon have each traversed a long and arduous path since their previous encounter on a sweltering March evening in Sydney a season and a half ago. Both experienced periods of success at various times last year. The Demons ran out of steam in midseason while the Swans went on to narrowly miss the ultimate prize in the sport. Now, they find themselves outside of finals contention as the season approaches the halfway mark. The winner this week will remain in contact with the leading pack, while the loser may well find itself on a precipice, staring into the abyss. The current season has presented numerous challenges for most clubs, particularly those positioned in the middle tier. The Essendon experience in suffering a significant 91-point loss to the Bulldogs, just one week after defeating the Swans, may not be typical, but it illustrates the unpredictability of outcomes under the league’s present set up.

  • REPORT: Brisbane

“Max Gawn has been the heart and soul of the Dees for years now, but this recent recovery from a terrible start has been driven by him. He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
