I watched every Casey game and recorded them for my research. Somebody must have been playing well down back! The average score against Casey for home and away, plus finals, was just over 56 points... less than 10 goals! Only one oppo player got off the chain across the season; Evans kicked 5 v Geelong. Only four oppo players managed 3 goals against Casey across the rest of the season. In 5 games the highest opposition goalkicker was a single goal!

I think Tomlinson played 14 games for Casey. In those outings he was the Rock around which the full defence was built. Undervaluing his contribution to the VFL Premiership is mean spirited! Should he be kept on the list? Should he be playing for an AFL club in 2023? Time will tell, but his form in 2022 was solid.

Dunstan, Baker, Mitch Brown, Munro, White…Casey was loaded with experienced footballers who contribute to winning. There’s a big difference between that and playing AFL level footy.

Tomlinson’s positioning, work rate, skills were all really good in helping Casey win. When it came to other aspects of his game he was a mile off and at no stage did it really look anything like it was improving.

I don’t know what he’ll be like next year, hopefully much better, but he was the key defensive version of Oskar Baker this year. Did a lot right but didn’t look like an afl player

So he was a good contributor?? Yeah?.

Tomlinson would do ok with any of Lever, May, Gawn, Petty, Salem and co playing our zone/position full ground press/defence.

Baker would not and never has

Still think our defence would cope without him and Bruce would be a better type for type and strengthen our weakness in the forward line

Played some excellent games for us before his knee popped

Yep, before he injured his knee was ranked number 1 in the AFL for winning 1 on 1 marking contests.

Welcome home Adam Tomlinson you provide great depth and if all goes well you may enable Petty to be tried forward or at worst you can come in for May, Petty or Rick if any are injured or out of form. Hope you have a great pre-season and get full confidence back in your leg, 2023 is going to be a huge year and we will need all of our experience, stamina and luck to finish top four again. Glad that you are still with us.!!!

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
