From AFLW: Melbourne recruit Sabreena Duffy has been cleared of damage after leaving the field against the Bombers on Saturday.

Duffy had appeared to re-injure her foot – which had a clean-out operation earlier this year – but scans are clear, and she remains in contention to play Carlton this weekend.

Absolutely cracking first quarter.

What’s the score?

Massive win by the girls - they looked very good by foot and hand….should be another great season for them!!

Had it on in the background so only saw about half of it. Easy win, Blues not much chop. Sometimes just looked like training drills.

Bannan kicked at least 3 I think.

Tayla Harris limped off before half time, I don't think I saw them come back on.

Blues were generally uncompetitive but better in Q2.  Dees have improved everywhere.  West and Purcell were super in the middle, Casey Sheriff kicked 2 or 3 goals and did lots of good things. The new Irish girl Blaithin Mackie was really promising on debut and her teammates all swelled around her after she kicked a rippa goal in Q4 (the girls call her ‘B’).

Lots to like.  Hore was outstanding and the forward line worked well and no Duffy or Daisy.   Gay behind the ball works well, Lampy was solid and young Wilson from Carlton looks good.

Our midfield looked impressive today but in Round 1 against the giant bodies of Hatchard, Marinoff, Randall et al and at Norwood Oval we will have our work cut out.  An exciting season awaits.  Go Dees.

Tyla Hanks is about the cleanest player in the league - either league

Sarah Black has her at number 22 in her top 30 AFLW best players.  Watching her at ground level you can really see that combination of footy smarts, toughness and elite skills.  She’s only gonna get better.

Agree with all of the above!

Not much to measure against but a comfortable and enjoyable hit out (especially in retrospect given the absolute stress in the game to follow). They tried a few things positionally and seemed like plenty of new faces got a run. Only blight was the injury to Harris (ankle?). She was testing it out at half time and was running so hopefully nothing catastrophic.

Highlight for me was Blaithin's goal. The team-wide celebration said it all.

Bring on Round 1!

As a practice match this was more of a statement from the girls.

No Daisy, Tayla injured before half time, and they just kept on belting the Blues into next week.  West and Purcell were brutal and clean in the middle, and the attacking moves all seemed to result in multiple options up forward.

Great to see Blaithin Makin score her first goal in this game.  As a first hit out, she seems to have the power necessary to play AFL well.  The other thing that stood out was our depth of talls.  All around the ground we have players standing head and shoulders above their opponents, from Harris to Bannon, Pearce, Gillard, Campbell and Zanker, they must really worry the opponents when they run onto the field.

70 point win to open the account in a game where teams struggle to kick that type of score in 2 weeks of playing, makes the season look promising.

P.S. Tayla went down in a tackle just before half time. Physio was working with her during the break, but she didn't come back on.  They seemed to be working through ankle, knee, achilles type stretches and exercises, but she was doing all of them, including kicking.  Didn't come back on after that.

It's weird that there's no match report on our website for the Carlton game. Working off the Twitter feed I've got all 13 goalscorers, but had to go to the Carlton website to find the goals/behinds at the end of each quarter. Can understand the Essendon game not getting coverage, but it's NQR not to put the scores/goalkickers of an official game on the website at a minimum.

P.S - If anyone's got the full list of goalscorers and quarter break goal/behind scores for Essendon I'd appreciate them for adding to Demonwiki

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.
