The Clubs 4th best coach in 150 odd years?

Not bad. Give him a few more years

It’s actually incredible how much of our historical success is accounted for by Smith and Hughes. As in, all of it, other than 1926 and 2021, with the early century flags being coachless. It puts Goodwin’s achievement in to perspective a bit.

He’ll pass Barassi for games coached in 2022 and Northey in 2023. Needs to still be around in 2026 to pass Danners to slot in to third. Incredible, doesn’t feel like he’s been around that long, just goes to show how little longevity there is in senior coaching circles.

By my calcs, Goody will need to still be going around in 2029 to pinch top spot, and that’s if we regularly play finals. That seems fairly unlikely in this era.

With Big Carl, his 25.5% win:loss ratio probably improves not counting games he where he was suspended or injured.   He made his team walk taller.  Loved the big man!

Perhaps not coincidentally he’s also only our 4th Premiership Coach - I believe officially in 1900 the VFL didn’t recognize coaches. Over time some sources took to naming the team’s captain of the day as the “coach”, but that’s only in hindsight.

Sorry @Nasher, see you had the same thought,

Who would have thought that an assistant at TWSNBN would coach a Flag before the mentor...

I wonder why Chadwick didn’t keep coaching, what a record and I will look forward to reviewing Goodys stats at the end of his stint with us, if I am still kicking. Lol.!!

Agree Nasher how good are Norm Smiths and Checker Hugh’s records, where would we have been without them.!!!

I know how Barassi coached 111 games for the MFC since he was appointed in 1981-1985 and did not make the finals thus he coached 110 games in the 5 years.

I believe he was allowed to be Captain Coach in the last game of the 1964 season but he was not officially the coach.

Ron Barassi coached Melbourne in 1964 when Norm Smith was coaching Victoria.

My memory of Big Carl as a demon was Carl throwing a back hander and hitting Kelly O'Donnell in the gob.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
