Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Might be a bit tougher to get amongst the medals tomorrow but we are in with a chance in 3 Rowing Finals, the 100m Freestyle for Women and Saya Sakakibara could surprise in the BMX racing

We've had a few really good days, so no shock if we have one or two quite ones.

We've already won the same amount of Gold that we did in both Rio & London after only 6 days, so it's been a very successful Games for Australia so far.

Yeah we've got 8 gold in 6 full days of competition but as we know,  once the swimming is over and done with, gold medals are harder to come by.  Be nice if we could keep up that sort of strike rate though TD!  One gold tomorrow would satisfy

Track Cycling,  Sailing,  all the team events,  Equestrian and maybe the Tennis & Athletics remain our best chances

Hockeyroos are making hard work of it against these plucky Kiwi's!

Yep, we've now bettered our Gold medal haul from London & Rio and come equal with Atlanta 96'. Only one Gold away coming into what would be one of our top 5 Gold medal hauls of all time if I'm not mistaken. 04', 00', 08', 56' & 96' being the current top 5 if I'm not mistaken?

Meanwhile a set back to our Rugby 7's women's team with a shock loss to USA. Will still progress to the Quarter Finals, however our draw won't be as kind as we would have been hoping.

A sloppy Kookaburras have just missed out on going through the group winning every match, conceding a late goal to draw with Spain 1-1.

This game had no effect on where they would finish as they were guaranteed to finish 1st in their group and it was essentially an elimination final for Spain, with the draw getting them through to the Quarter Finals, where a loss would have left them vulnerable.

Nothing to be concerned about at this stage, as the Kookaburras have saved their best hockey for their best opponents so far (India 7-1 & Argentina 5-2), but would still have liked to go through to the knockout stage with a win ideally.

Del Solar/Clancy have lost their final group match against the Russians 21-8, 15-21, 15-12.

The good news here is that the girls didn't play well at all (especially in the first set) but only just lost and fought it out. Will wait to see who they draw in the Round of 16, but it won't be an easy match whoever it is.

Matt Wearn has secured us another gold in the sailing.

Not official on the tally as yet as the event doesn't finish for a few days, but he's so far ahead he isn't getting caught!

Wow! That is a surprise

We are currently 2nd in the Men's 470 but the details on some of the women's events are a bit sketchy ... we'll know more in a day or 2

Dirty day for our womens 7's team. After a shock loss to USA this morning they've lost their Quarter Final to Fiji 14-12 and will not be able to defend their Gold Medal from 2016.

So outside the remarkable effort of the Matildas, it continues to be a challenging day for our teams. Womens Waterpolo team have gone down to Spain 15-9. Let's hope the Opals can bounce back against China shortly.

That Matilda’s win has got to be one of the gutsiest performances by an Australian team I’ve seen. The game ebbed and flowed, it was exciting almost throughout with both teams attacking. That penalty was ridiculously soft (isn’t VAR there to stop that bull****?), but what a response and the Aussie public need to get behind them right now.

EDIT also how refreshing to see two teams in a knock out actually playing attacking football as opposed to being afraid to concede.

From an overall perspective (re the teams) we are still well in the hunt with the Matilda's, Kookaburra's, Hockeyroos, Boomers, the Women's Water Polo team & the Women's Beach Volleyball team.

The Men's Water Polo team are still alive but it's tough to win a medal against the Eastern European Nations

And the Equestrian team in the 3 day event are often in the running for a medal of any colour

Opals need to get a win on the board against China tonight to be in the mix

2 gold out of all that as a conservative prediction?  Has to be at least 1 gold but 3 gold would be an excellent outcome

Think it's fair to say the Opals era is over. Lost to China by 2 points for an 0-2 start to the campaign. Can still make the Quarter Finals with a big win over Puerto Rico, but can't see us going beyond that the way they're playing. Opals fought to the end tonight, but their lack of star power (no Jackson, Taylor, Timms etc) seems to be the difference.

As TD mentioned above, the Opals battle hard but we lack star power and difference-makers.

Even so, we're going to need a couple of results going our way just to advance and then win our remaining game by 30+ points against Puerto Rico (which is do-able as Puerto Rico have been thrashed in their first 2 games)

If everything falls into place we can advance but it's what happens from there which remains problematical

Gold & Bronze to Australia! McKeown & Seebohm repeat what McKeon & Campbell did yesterday!

What an effort from Seebohm claiming an individual medal in her 4th games!

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
