The way I interpret the situation, ATAGI has not changed the underlying argument surrounding the use of any of the vaccines. The basis for their position is the relative risk of illness and possible death from being unvaccinated compared with the relative risk of illness and possible death from being vaccinated with AZ (or Pfizer). The relative risk changes depending on local circumstances. Hence, because the NSW situation has got worse, the risk profile changes and makes remaining unvaccinated a greater risk than having the AZ. Unfortunately, in making these decisions, the ATAGI has not appreciated that it has helped to "tarnish" AZ in the process. The average Joe in the street just sees that as confusion LDC.whatever way I look at this I see mismanagement. Have you ever seen anyone from the ATAGI in the media taking questions / explaining their decisions? I have not. It seems they advise by press release. Still if they turn out to be the “ don’t touch the football” types perhaps a press release is better.

Just for clarity the ATAGI for inconsistency in age group recommendations I was referring to in my last post was initially they said it was for 60+ then for a while they said 50+ then they changed it back to 60+. Those recommendations have driven the communications on AZ and I agree ATAGI don't seem to be aware of the role they have played in the confusion. Edited July 26, 2021 by Lucifer's Hero

The AFL are using Perth as a contingency plan for finals. You know the state that locks down on the morning of game day without any notice. How can the AFL possibly take that risk on grand final day? With regards to out lockdown ending today, we should be able to have a crowd for our game against Adelaide in round 22, if the easing of restrictions are consistent with lockdown 4, which they appear to be at this stage.

I think that is behind the AFL talking to WA. They have the info that there will not be spectators at Victorian games any time soon. Games at the G and across the tracks for Rugby were the big spreader events in this last wave. Sad for the Dees but the finances will take further hits every week before the season ends in 6 weeks time.

Perhaps the AFL is dangling a carrot (the possibility of hosting the Grand Final) in front of the WA Government for other reasons, such as confirmation by the government that there'll be no disruption to the playing the remaining home and away games in Perth.
Demonland 74,333 Posted July 27, 2021 Author Posted July 27, 2021 No crowds at the Footy for at least 2 weeks.

Real Footy Podcast - I think Jake Niall - said AFL would be brave to hold in WA, given that a no-crowds order could literally be imposed on the day of a final. Caro thinks Adelaide. Surely Gabba or Adelaide if not the G. Better to have 50k at AO or G rather than 20k at the G, maybe? Finals 5 weeks away (?) and GF 9....lot of water under the bridge between now and then.

Jaded No More 68,976 Posted July 27, 2021 Posted July 27, 2021 If we can't have finals in Victoria, next best option would be SA and borders open. An easy trip for us Victorians that can be planned at short notice if needed. [censored] WA! 1

From there they can fly to other States as allowed. You could fly teams into SA from WA if that was permitted for some of the games. Same for Victoria and possibly Queensland if the crowd limits work.

Am in NNSW and prior to this outbreak - in Sydney, and with no community transmission cases in NNSW for months - could have gone. QLD border now shut for attendance at sporting events even to border bubble residents. Don't get many chances to get to games so this is most annoying, Gladys.

That is the guy who, despite being advised being a close contact flew SYD-BNK, was picked up by the QLD flight attendant, and I am speculating here, might have been responsible for the detection of virus in wastewater in Byron (the dates match and there are no other cases here), then crossed the border seeding QLD outbreak and then lied to contact tracers about his movements. Shocking. 1

Shocking. Yep and is apparently not cooperating with contact tracers, and had to have police formally interview him in the presence of his lawyer. What a hero... it only takes one or three idiots to send millions into lockdown. People are so selfish, it really is mind boggling. Edited July 27, 2021 by Jaded
Soidee 1,496 Posted July 27, 2021 Posted July 27, 2021 It’s about time and long overdue that the AFL and State Government come up with a better plan for allowing crowds to the football. Apart from killing the game for spectators the long term effect for clubs is horrendous. they can improve the track and tracing, separate the crowds at games and do a lot more instead of clubs playing in front of nobody. I’ve made it to two games in two years due to this and frankly they are in fairy land if they think this is not going to continue next year and beyond. must be better ways of separating crowds before and when they leave the stadium. I would even go as far as asking patrons to get a Covid test before they can attend, and also letting fully vaccinated people attend. Anything is better than the current nonsense.
