From the AFL:

Contact between Melbourne's Matthew Whelan and St Kilda's Luke Ball from the first quarter of Friday's match was reviewed. It was the view of the panel that Whelan ran from eight to 10 metres from in front of Ball. Ball was tracking the Melbourne player in possession and, just before contact was made, Whelan turned his body to shepherd his teammate, resulting in contact between Whelan's back and Ball's chest. The momentum of the contact result in an accidental head clash. Under the tribunal guidelines, as this was an accidental head clash, it was the view of the panel

- the force was not excessive, given the short distance that Whelan moved;

- Ball was actively involved in the passage of play;

- Ball was in a position to protect himself;

- Whelan did not use either his shoulder or his elbow to make high contact;

- Whelan did not leave the ground at any stage.

As such, the action was not deemed to be reportable.

and...

Contact between Melbourne's Aaron Davey and St Kilda's Steven Baker from the third quarter of Friday's match was reviewed. It was the view of the panel that Davey made contact with Baker's neck after the St Kilda player had disposed of the ball. Davey's action was a pushing motion and not a strike, and was not considered a reportable offence.

What about Hodge??

Luke Hodge, Hawthorn, has been charged with tripping Nigel Lappin, Brisbane Lions, during the third quarter of the Round One match between Hawthorn and the Brisbane Lions, played at the Gabba on Saturday March 31, 2007.

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 66 points towards his future record with an early plea.

The incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of three activation points, which relates to a Level One Offence, drawing 80 demerit points and a reprimand. He has a total of one match suspended within the last three years, which increases his penalty by 10 per cent to 88 points. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 66 points and a reprimand.

did he purposely grab his leg to stop him running? how could this be negligent, shouldnt it be deliberate?

negligent could only mean that it was not on purpose and he shouldnt have taken more care. ie he had fallen over, was trying to get up and lappin ran over his legs. of course it was deliberate...at least it was reckless (ie he was trying to tackle and missed)...

Glad to see that whelan the wrecker will be available to take on the hawks.

Whelan will be needed if the dees are to restore some pride agaisnt the hawks. His inclusion to the starting lineup is a massive bonus.

    UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

    Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
