Interesting stat revealed during yesterday's game on ABC radio.

This season MFC leads the comp in the number of behinds kicked.

Late in the 4th quarter we were 62 goals...62 behinds

Definitely something to work on..my guess is that ideally goals should be double the behinds figure.

Just imagine if we had kicked straight over the 5 weeks.

Jones is very lucky to be in the side. He has absolutely no right to that position if he misses absolute “sitters”

Keep them practicing Mr. Williams

We've actually kicked 65 goals and 72 behinds for the season, only Freo and North have worse conversion than us. Against us we've had 47 goals and 31 points kicked, so teams are very accurate, GWS kicked 11.2! Only Collingwood have a higher goals/points against ratio.

If we had the average goal/point ration for and against, our percentage would be sitting up at 177% (we'd still be sitting 2nd!)

We also have yet to lose a last quarter, and the only other team to also do this we play this weekend coming.

New data

Imagine thinking your team was primed for a crack at the top four and five rounds into the season you’ve won the least amount of quarters in the league.

Less than North ffs.

As we have not had leading forwards up the centre we have forwards going wide . The wider you lead  the chances of goals are reduced. Fritsch is a good example )

I don't find that surprising at all. Imagine where our girls side would sit with such a stat.

Brisbane are also 5-0 for final quarters. But we do have the highest 4thQ % - 151 - 74 - keeping in mind we've kicked 25 4thQ behinds as well! Need to hold on to Burgess any way we can.

St Kilda  are below North on the quarters won....

Wow.

Thanks Skuit, overlooked that. I love that we've ran out games so well, the Burgess method he put in place last year has clearly continued on. We were hurt much worse than other teams last year with the shorten quarters IMO.

I'm wondering if we have a much larger percentage of goals against us close to goal, say within 15 meters, compared to the competition. Just thinking that our defense is doing so well that teams might be bombing long and hoping for the chaos ball to get over the line, so the goal/behind percentage might even out over time. Anyone know where those stats can be found?

Ideally we should never kick a behind...

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front.  They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
