9 “expert” journalists on AFL website have given their 2021 crystal ball predictions

only one thinks the Dees can make the 8

two think Christian Petracca will win the Brownlow (Riley beveridge and Cal Twomey)

otherwise we are mainly irrelevant

most predictions have us in the 9th to 13th range.

Oliver is the value for the Brownlow more so than Trac I feel. Very consistent poller (I think he had ~13 votes in a lean-ish yr last yr) and his contract is up for renewal which will probably give him motivation plus keep him in the media spotlight through out the year.

It shows the media set a narrative and then all buy into it.  Good luck to them, what you are getting is uninformed guesswork like any of us can offer, as biased as it may be.  Obviously the narrative around MFC is middle to poor.

BTW, Sideshow is more likely to be a recruit of the year, taking a crap forward line and turning it into a thing of beauty rather than Daniher who has to take goals from his team mates.

Pretty much everyone follows the same formula predicting the final 8. Step 1: write down the 8 teams that played finals last year; Step 2: cross out the team that created the worst off season headlines (Collingwood); Step 3: insert flavour of the month from outside the 8 (Carlton/ Freo).

If we'd finished 8th instead of 9th last year, most would be picking us to make finals.

Why should anyone from outside the Club trust The MFC?

We collapse when real Pressure is applied.
Happens every year

We should get off to a good start and win the first 3: Freo, Saints and GWS injuries are just as bad if not worse than ours.

I don't really care what commentators say.  Its our story to write.

I have little doubt we can make the 8 and win a final or two.  Will we?  Who knows.

Wish I had your enthusiasm.

I have his enthusiasm - but I'm also a realist. With the key injuries and other interruptions over the pre-season, I'll be pleasantly surprised if we win one of the first three.

Not sure about that despite I am bullish about BBB and his upside fir us.

Daniher is looking ominous with HD marking and kicking and so important to the development of the Zlions options up forward. Might easily be recruit of the year!!! BBB not far behind though liked Goody's  positive Interview on AFL website today on Big Ben.

Geez, that’s optimistic. I think the Freo game is a real danger game and if we lose that we’ll go 0-4.

Have a look at the respective injury lists.  Freo, Saints and GWS will be missing some big name outs which offset our likely outs.  Players on all 3 teams will have interrupted preseasons or lack match practice.

And, we beat Saints and GWS last year.  Should have beaten Freo.

They are absolutely must win games to make finals and 3-0 wins will be a confidence boost and keep the baying pack quiet for a while.

If that set or circumstances isn't sufficient to motivate our 'angry' players to victory then I give up and will join the more pessimistic on this board.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
