Max Gawn on SEN (1/2/21)

And this was SEN's take on the interview....

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2021/01/31/thats-relatively-embarrassing-melbournes-focus-during-the-pre-season/

I'd hope over and above sorting out the midfield-forward line connection issues raised that they're also looking at the ruck-rover connection, which I feel has significant room for growth as well.

Max is the right choice as Captain and beyond 2021. He leads by example. Max mentioned that TMac is fitter than what he has been and that Brown is doing well which is good news.

I feel that we might just see a team with  more urgency than ever before.  You can just sense it.

It is probably due to my view of this year in total but I don’t sense a team with more urgency at this stage. It may well be on display in the next month but right now how do you judge that?

interesting the comment re Yze and more aggressive ball movement in the midfield. We actually improved when we started to stop and evaluate in our ball movement mid year. I think you really have to 'pick' your times to attack and it takes experience, especially against disciplined sides. but thats footy and we need to get better at it.

The difficulty is, last year preseason, the 'urgency' was through the roof. I remember being so confident, based on the training reports that we would go deep into finals, and look what happened. I agree that it's very hard to judge until you see what unfolds in the actual season.

Sorry nosoupformebut that does not answer my question. How do you judge that?
Do you mean you feel more urgency or do you feel that from what Max said,? Do you feel that from what other players have said or is it your gut feel?

      Was there a question  o d ?   I thought you were ruminating !   OH I AM SORRY

It is my gut feel.   Or is it the Vibe ?  It is my gut feel.

Ok that is what I was asking. With no training at Goschs, very few training reports and the Casey being too far for the media I have very little feeling on the vibe of the team. I was just asking how you arrived at the feeling. Lots of back and fro between us on very little. I hope are right by the way.

Just like you l have been following the club for a long time from the early 60s and the list we have is  a good mix of tall mediums and smalls.

Sooner rather than later it will all come together as this team has been building for a number of years .

The least injuries we have the the better outcome we will have. So l have reason to believe that it is one of our better lists for a long while.

I don’t disagree with that. Having followed them for just a few more years I have been warned down to except mediocrity from the MFC. I look eagerly to that  being a thing of the past. But have low confidence it will be achieved.

Butchers in the midfield is not a coaching issue or an endeavor issue. Its a personnel issue. After 10 years footballers aren't suddenly going to start making the right decisions and hitting targets because someone tells them to. One, maybe two, a team can accommodate. We had 3 last year. Reading between the lines, the club realises it.

Fairly fluffy interview, not that you'd expect Max to be saying much in the negative. Sounds as though the pressure on spots should hopefully push the best our of our forwards though.

I think we have a number of people this year who have a point to prove much like seeing Trac's performance last year.

I can see Ben Brown, Lever and May all busting a gut to improve. Their motivations might all be different but I can see the drive to prove themselves. Much to the chagrin of some here, I also see that drive in TMac and ANB.

Even Yze and Choco have a point to prove this year. I think it augurs well for the season ahead in a way that is different to some of the past. I feel that there is more of a confluence of things that will contribute to an improvement this year. Touch wood, baring injuries.

... which unfortunately translated into a fanatical, almost desperate, game style for the first half of the year.

There was no tempo about it at all. They just needed to calm down, to be cooler and smarter with the ball - well, with everything really.

Hopefully they’ll have learnt from last year, and will now play with more maturity, with more class, and with cooler heads.

Slick handballs under pressure and in congestion should be a developing phase for us now, with maybe a little less ball carry and then the precision kick under duress....leave the bullock work to bullocks.

I think chocco's impressive yellow footies my be the difference this year.

Im loading up on the Dees.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
