How much room does the AFL think there is on those jumpers?

Especially if your name is like a Kolodjashnij. It would be so small no one could see it properly from far away.

Just saw your post FD. Sorry, but those jumpers look a mess. I notice they show only short names.

You have sold out OD. Very disappointed. Not like you. You have to keep some things sacred to stop the slow and invidious creep of commercialism and the second rate TV and media folk, advertisers and the AFL fat cats who will sell their mother down the road for a few dollars.  Increasingly, we have to choose our line in the sand to say no to the infidels. Those who are happy to trade away traditions for marketing reasons and money. OD, I know somewhere within your being is decency and your football soul. It’s there, just need to give it a shake and not lay down and be raped by the entertainers and money sharks.

I am duly chastised Ernest and on the basis of your expressed reasons I am now numbers forever. I am right beside you as we storm the barricades of the AFL money sharks.

McDonald-Tippungwuti would have to be dropped or retire citing lack of space for name on guernsey as the reason

In his era, a famous Melbourne boy, great cricketer, handy footballer, Doctor. Played sport in in the early part of last century. Attended Wesley College and Melb Uni. A renaissance man. Played test cricket (one test?) and VFL footballer (Uni?).

Just looked at Wikipedia and Roy Park was a pretty incredible guy.

As a teenager, I remember hearing a number of old guys of the day say that he was the greatest schoolboy footballer and cricketer they had ever seen.

Served in WW1 and played for Uni, Dees and North. A little guy at 5ft 5 he kicked lots of goals but retired after being suspended for 4 weeks for hitting a player. He maintained  he did not commit the offence and was outraged by the suspension. Clearly a man of principle.

His Test career was one test and a first ball duck. His wife dropped her knitting and missed his entire Test career. Served as an administrator and his son in law was ex Test cricketer and Sec of the MCC, Ian Johnson. His entry in Wikipedia is worth a read for history buffs.

I still think of 16 as Johnny Townsends number.

That makes you a moderately old bugger Damo. ( with a good memory)

I remember Townsend well as a player but what number he was I would have no idea. I can only remember three  player numbers obviously no 31, no. 9 Brian Dixon and no.6 of course was Frank Adams. I have never been into numbers I struggle to remember the current numbers on game day.

Emphasis on the word moderate rather than old bugger pineapple.

Moderately aged gent, seasoned supporter, well aged supporter. Senior supporter, long-time supporter.

But I give you credit for your diplomacy. As you get older feelings become important. Because you still feel young but notice the furniture is sagging and bits start to fall off or stop working.

That’s why some of us are greeting desperate as we watch the sands of time passing.

No more rebuilds, false dawns, just win a bloody flag and give us back our pride. NOW

Agree completely Ernest however it will not be in 2021. We will just have to stay alive till 2022.

And older old buggers such as myself think of Bib Bob Johnson.

Ditto, OD but, like me, wouldn't you add Hassa's 29 and perhaps John Lord's 4?

When you say a player and number it comes back to me but to recall off memory no TRA.

Or Strawberry’s #1

Without knowing the numbers it would be very difficult to recall the playing list.

My problem is that I still remember the player numbers from the 1950s and 1960s like they were still playing, but I struggle with the current team.  I mentioned this to Mrs Deeoldfart one day last season, and she comforted me  by saying "that's quite understandable dear, the game is so much faster these days".

I àlways go for diplomacy if I can manage it. I would classify myself as an ' experienced ' supporter rather than a grumpy old coot who follows the dees. I would say there would be very few of those on Demonland.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
