I wondered if anyone would notice but of course that is fake news. Actually I was thinking the longer term like the last half century. Now don’t produce the stats that say it is only 80%. Two fake news items  in the one day will be too much for me!!!!

PS there is no chance Goodwin will get 8 years without a flag.

So you're sacking Ken Hinkley today?

What's that got to do with Goodloss and the MFC? He won't get 8 years without a flag at the MFC.

If we assume that what you mean by "success" is on-field success, we clearly are not. If that were the case, then clubs with the biggest "investment" (= most members) would consistently have on-field success, and vice versa. You only have to look at the teams in the 8 this year to see that that's demonstrably untrue.

Ummm...not sure what you are getting at here 'bing' but so far the first team into the GF is the one with maybe largest membership. Have won 2 of the 3 last flags 2017 & 2019...WC the one in the middle 2018, large membership Hawks another large club 3 2013, 2014 & 2015.

The only outlier has been the Dogs in recent times 2016...

C'mon od you're better than that. Anyone who uses "Goodloss" or "Badloss" gets an automatic eyeroll and swipe down the page from me,  it's just so lame like a dad joke on steroids

Hinkley is in his 8th year and no flag.  Port lost the PF by 6 points - by your simple logic today he's sacked.

Sorry dr. I could not help myself. Point is there is no chance he will be the coach for 8 years without a flag.

This review is taking a while. Our season finished 4 weeks ago. Not much noise either. Surely if Mahoney was being let go it would have been announced by now. Plus trade period is rapidly approaching.

Adem Yze is a great additional but we need more. I guess now that Port are out we can talk to Voss so hopefully there’ll be developments there.

Good on them for not rushing things?

Fair enough. I’m concerned though we won’t be organised for trade week.

So we come runners up the next 3 years you think he gets sacked?

It's good IMV that things haven't been announced yet. Port were only just knocked out and Richmond are still in it.

Zero chance of that happening. Making the GF is beyond his ability.

Goodloss?

You're better than that, OD.  Be critical as much as you like, but no need to pull this five year old stuff out.

On another thread we were ranking Goodwin against other coaches. Objectively he would have to be in the bottom four.

These are the measures I used.

Improving players

Game day tactics

Gameplan

Team selection

Player management

Skill improvement

Competition respect

You could add other criteria but except for the "good bloke" factor which helps him in the area of player management he doesn't excel at at many if any of the others.

In my view he is poor match day coach. If the other team is winning he hardly ever makes a change. Just keeps doing the same and expecting a different result. When the other side gets a run on he again very seldom changes anything.

That's fine mate, no knocking your views or your freedom to post them.

The 'Goodloss' stuff just seems so out of character and childish for you.

don't think that's true at all

he throws players back and forward...just never changed the midfield rotations

They don’t stop working while the review is going on.

Same thing was said about Hardwick.

It's a tricky one, there is something to be said for backing your system in and drilling it in to your players over a number of years until it "clicks" and becomes second nature and the team becomes a formidable unit.

There also needs to come a time where the coach has to make moves if things aren't working because you just need to win.

The big issue I see is he has little support in the coaches box. He's had Richardson, McCartney etc but I'm talking about the line coaches who have been poor throughout his tenure. We need to invest in the coaching staff and turnover all of our assistants (it should have been done post-2018 in my opinion) and he also needs to start making moves on game day before things get out of hand. The players need to take accountability for this as well as I think our onfield leadership is poor but how much of that is a reflection of the coaching staff (assistants and development coaches in particular?)

Either way we will know by mid next year. Goodwin has shown during his tenure he isn't scared to try things, he has actually been quite innovative in some of the tactics he has implemented. My big knock on him is he can get the team to a position where they can destroy bottom sides but can't compete against top sides. He needs the team to get off to a flyer next year and we also need to take some scalps otherwise his coaching career will be over.

No I don't think he is.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
