I have it on good authority that the current aerobic fitness levels of our boys is far far superior to levels of the past few seasons. It seems Bohdan and his fitness boys are developing a team that will not fade during a match and more importantly not fade towards the season's end. Also they are very pleased with the excellent progress made by Moloney. Roll on season 2007!

It is interesting to note how the perception of the 'ideal' physical shape of our players has changed. In previous pre-seasons we have all thirsted for comments from posters in the pre-season how this or that player has bulked up in the pre-season. Now we are hearing about how Brock and Jones and others have lost kg's etc. I'm a bit confused at the moment. Which is better? Physical strength or lighter/endurance players. With the constant rule changes making the game quicker, maybe we are getting smarter and producing lean mean running machines. Or maybe we are falling into a trap and producing puny push-overs. It will be interesting to see whether our new fitness coaches ideas blossom or flop in the coming months.

Relate body shape to the way the game is played Pringle and you'll find it much easier.

Bobby I hear all this news. But in four practice games I can't really remember us coming home strongly once.

Hope you're right.

Although our players look like they have all trimmed down, you can still maintain or even increase your strength. Muscle bulk doesn't always equate to more strength.

If we have increased our fitness does this mean we can cross off ND excuse of 2006 that we run out of legs, every game we lost we ran out of legs according to ND.

I agree, the game is changing without a doubt, but I believe that there will always be a need for your hard in and under player, unless every player on the park has pristine ball handling skills.

Although occasionally they were a bit flat or didn't come to play.

It's about having a balance.

You need both the stonger in and under type players, but you also need the players who can run all day. There's no right or wrong in terms of "the best body shape".

Though I think everyone will agree that carrying an extra 5-10kgs in fat is not on.

I think we finished over the top of Richmond, but that was about all.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
