Clubs perceived by the AFL to be powerful regularly get off lightly.  Yet minnows like us get whacked all the time.  To call the error "inadvertent" is a cop out of the highest order.  A failure to abide by your fiduciary obligations, for any "business" is inexcusable.  Ignorance is no excuse under the Law

Carlton and Essendon have been whacked just like we have been.

Salary cap discrepancies usually have at least Draft Pick sanctions along with the fine it's unusual that Geelong got away with just a fine, especially such a minor one at that!

Steve Hocking looking after his own club. What a surprise.

Not just his own club. The club he was a key executive of at the time the salary cap discrepancies occurred!

We self reported when Joe Gutnick was in the chair.  Carlton and Essendon were recidivists and by comparison to our penalty, got off rather lightly in my view.

HATE THEM

Smug Bastards

I guess the AFL feel the need to support one Victorian country team.

Yep. Players have been recruited outside the laws

8 years is a long time to not notice a thing

Absolute BS

Dangerfield, Ablett - both should be deregistered for 12 months!

no doubt our intrepid media reporters will hound the afl for all the details in the interests of transparency and fair play

oh, wait a minute......don't bite the hand that feeds you

Tom Browne has said that it was an error related to GST on management fees the club pays on behalf of players

First question: why is the club paying management fees for players?

Second question: how can you have stuffed up gst inclusions for EIGHT straight years???

Third question: getting gst wrong would also flag the tax office, surely - doubt they'd not notice for eight years

of course, the football manager at the cats throughout at least seven of these eight years is now the football manager of the afl as a whole.......

4th question : why is this vague information bring relayed by a third rate muckraker instead of by the AFL in their media release?

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
