This is dizzy stuff folks..

It is only Dizzy for the brethren who believe we are of to Caulfield. Take it to the bank we will be at Waverley sooner than later and we have a snowflakes chance in hell of EVER getting to Caulfield, PERIOD. What that will ultimately mean is that in the absence of any other viable alternative, Waverley will be our home for the forseable future. All over red rover!

Sadly I think you are correct PF.

Not quite sure about the first paragraph. No other state is quite in our position and if the commonwealth was underwriting Victoria Glasgow wouldn’t be hosted the Commonwealth Games.

Agree that $20 million should be a drop in the ocean for the state government and it absolutely should be framed as a community use project. It is obvious where the hold up is coming from.

I think we will eventually get there but more patience is required.

Not getting into political arguments but have a look at https://adepteconomics.com.au/australias-rapidly-climbing-state-debts/ According to the graphs, Vic public debt (both gross and Nett) per capita is increasing less than all states except WA over the 5 year period. Just on the debt amount (not per capita) there is not much difference between Vic and NSW and we have a hell of a lot more infrastructure than Sydney.

This is a classic case of a big whopper getting thrown out there then someone basing all the dire predictions upon it.

It would NOT take a year to build a tunnel.

Caulfield races in 'seasons" effectively and there's quite a bit of non activity through the year. Any half decent Civil outfit could work around any and all constraints.

There would be NO reason to impact the racing AT ALL !!

This is nothing more than 🐂💩 scaremongering by someone with an agenda.

Whether Caulfield goes ahead or not....its entirely do-able.

Whomever fed the story to BETSY is on a mission.

Wasted a decade chasing a dream site near the mcg, 2 yrs ago Pert announced Caulfield dream and will waste another 5 yrs, it’s unbelievable how this club just can’t get things done, understanding that they can’t control all aspects but FFS… Hope Waverley is done as Gawn said news to him ..the silence is deafening from the club… Tom Norris reports are what then???

I'm going to slightly defend the club here (only slightly). We are the only club at a disadvantage of being born out of the MCG, all thee other teams had spiritual homes in their designated area and they owned the assets.

What I will say is that the club sat back for decades watching places get built and the housing/land market get squeezed and did nothing. Then when it was decided that "oh we need a home that's not the MCG" it was too late or we passed up golden opportunities. Then as you said we've chased this dream of space in the shadows of the MCG but that whole project never sounded real. Caulfied I have a little more hope over but until the thing is signed off and they've broken ground I'm not holding my breath.

But here's the reality, whether it's Caulfied or something else, we as supporters need to stop worrying about it being near the MCG. I'll take being in the suburbs (though not as far as Casey). I'm so sick of us going through this, I remembered being first explained this stupid issue when I was 12 years old and really getting into the footy. I'm 39 now, this is a joke.

I was at a Mental Demons function last night where Steven Smith confirmed that Waverley is definitely not happening and the Caulfield option is very close to being announced.

I have never heard of the Mental Demons. But that's irrelevant, I'm a nobody.

BUT, IF IT'S TRUE, I would place far more credence on the word of our President than anyone else, be it in the media or on this forum.

Contrary to popular nonsense on here they just need to lower their eyes and stop wishing for the world.

No, fans should not be the focus.

No, co-location of the suits should not be a focus.

Get an elite base for the athletes and FD to congregate near where they live and focus on that.

if we pass up on Waverley to hope we may get Caulfield in 5 yrs and blow another chance of one roof club that will also be another missed opportunity

If we're saying there'll be no racing at Caulfield for 12 months due to construction etc, how does the Moonee Valley situation impact the whole deal? With MV out of action, if Caulfield is as well it leaves Flemington and the rarely used Sandown as the only Vic-metro options? I can't see how that would work TBH. I don't think anything could happen at Caulfield until MV is fully back in action, which at this point is August 2027.

With the rise of night meetings, and the growth towards Pakenham and Cranbourne, those tracks could potentially shoulder some of the demand. Those Cranbourne facilities are second to none, I doubt you'd see many complaints from trainers. Its more the clubs trying to generate $$$$, as they have to - to survive. I think Guerra knows this, as he has demanded a tunnel at Caulfield. If I didn't know better, I'd say Guerra could have government assurances in respect to our side of the deal, as the whole deal around us going to Caulfield, I suspect would need to be subsidised, to an extent. However, that is just my uneducated - and speculative - take on Caulfield.

Facade or not they are good indicators of the massive debt the state is in which has grown by over 400% in the last decade.

If you think the government has a license to print license to print money then that is wrong.

All federal spending is currency creation. All that spending occurs via the RBA crediting exchange settlement accounts, which create deposits in the private banking system.

The state government is different, however, it is a currency user, it doesn't create new liabilities when it spends, but does have access to cheaper debt, and can afford $20 million dollars.

As former RBA Governor Bernie Fraser once said, "governments have responsibilities that go beyond".

But bang on about debt hysteria as if it's like a business or household.

All of the above, and NRL doesn't require facilities of any great measure. Just a gym with the biggest weights possible ( when we first moved into AAMI, I was told the AFL players don't use the biggest barbells, but Storm do).

If you have ever seen a NRL side train, it is nothing more than a throw the ball around session, which can be done on a basketball court.

Pack of barbarians

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
