Watching the cricket last evening I could not help thinking about the similarities between the New Zealand cricket team and the North Melbourne football club. Both have  small membership base and a financial struggle but they punch way above their weight and always give you a good run for your money.

That got me to thinking about other cricket teams around the world and who were their counterparts in the AFL.

England was easy.... it is of course Collingwood.. the team everyone else hates.

Other similarities came to mind but I am interested to see what we all think.

Took me  awhile to come up with a cricket team that resembled the MFC and then like a bolt from the blue I knew the answer. It is of course the West Indies. A once great team living on past glories beset by financial woes as the rest of the competition leaves the Calypso cricketers in their wake.

Interested in what other "matches" people come up with.... Sri Lanka and Brisbane Lions perhaps (world beaters for a few years based on some out of the box players)

Hmmm, from a global perspective I reckon the Aussies have the Collingwood honour sewn up. We are pretty unpopular anywhere outside these shores. Main difference is that they win more regularly.

Good point.

I had thought Hawthorn perhaps..........boringly successful (from a non Hawthorn/Aussie perspective.)

I reckon India are like Collingwood, biggest supporter=membership base and they basically control the whole sport due to the power and influence they wield.

Yep. The BCCI is Collingwood

Australia is Hated around the world, no doubt about that. I find it hard to watch Australia now, particularly when Australians are also commentating. Dave Warner is a Flat Track turd.
Although the guy who comes in at 3 will be a legend!!

New Zealand Rock. They play hard and fair

hard to see the kiwis winning it but if they are 2-150 when the night session commences with a target of say 450 it will be interesting

Back on the world teams... India to me is more like West Coast or Adelaide Crows... disgustingly wealthy and growing more powerful each year.Mind you the world players have been quick to take the money...

Bangladesh are perhaps the Freo or St Kilda of world cricket... you know they will never get to the top but we have a soft spot for the Tigers..

Not sure about South Africa...........

I would have left the flat track bit out.

I agree with others though. When I first read this thread my first thought was the India/Collingwood double.

South Africa remind me of Geelong.

Aussies - Essendon

Teams that cheat for no advantage

It was not the team but a couple of individuals. Warner and Bancroft. Smith was unfairly treated but he was the captain.

So where would you have the poms with dirt on the ball or for that matter the sub continent sides who took cheating to a new level or South African captain Du Plessis who has been done twice for it.

I think the Bowlers would have known if a ball had been tampered with...
Smith was as weak as...

He said nothing....

Add Lehmann to that too, who in my opinion got away with murder.

As it turned out New Zealand reminded me of Melbourne. They came over to play an away game with a   reputation  of being an all round side solid with the bat and stars with  abundance of talent etc... and they were  blown out of the water.     SUCH IS LIFE.

When I saw this title I immediately wished we could have the same rate of success as the Melbourne Demons CRICKET CLUB. On top of current ladder at present.  Oh for the footy team to have the same success. Maybe its going to happen and soon!

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
