I see more advertising opportunities as a result.  If the players get too tired as a result of the shorter 1/2 time break, they can then introduce 15 second ads at every ball-up to give the players a chance to rest.

Or ..... interchange numbers will become MANDATORY, with pre-arranged interchange times throughout each quarter ... that somehow take exactly 30 seconds.

Remember, every good idea you have ever had has already been thought of by a TV advertising executive.

Wonder if the 20 minute half time break was related to the Tea break in cricket of 20 minutes.

For soccer it's generally 15, rugby 10 and for an NFL game it's 12 minutes so there seems to be no uniformity

Does anyone know if half time breaks have always been 20 minutes? It would be ironic if the half time break used to be shorter but was extended to 20 minutes under pressure from the TV rights holder who wanted to pack in more ads.

I’ve asked this q in the thread a couple of times for no response. I don’t think any of us knows how and why any of the breaks were set. Maybe in the 40s the first and 3rd qtr breaks were 6.7mins and halftime was 13.4mins?

@sue good point re the quick ad spots in the break of play thought. US sports this happens so often.

Ban on bringing alcohol into the ground; preposterous to think you'd put anything but alcohol in a hip flask.

Exactly 30-seconds, or else!

7 already introduced those  a year or two back but  they don't take up all the screen.  yet...

I can see the Head in the Clouds segment on the big scoreboard being the first casualty of this decision.

Um, yes. I know.

I was making a joke.

Of course Binman. I suspect we are of a similar vintage, hence the explanation; several younger generations may not even know what a hip flask is.

AFL says no to shorter half time breaks in 2020.

Good news.

Seemed like an unnecessary change in my book.

Next, the AFL will now try to sell shorter quarters to the fans.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
