With the trade period more or less complete, I thought I would put together our list for people to refer to. Apologies if there is already a thread similar to this, mods feel free to move. The list has to be made up of between 38-40 Senior players, 4-6 Category A rookies and 0-3 Category B rookies.

Essentially we can go into 2020 with a squad of

  • 38 senior players and 6 Cat A rookies
  • 39 senior players and 5 Cat A rookies
  • 40 senior players and 4 Cat A rookies

Senior List

  1.  Oscar Baker
  2.  Toby Bedford
  3.  Angus Brayshaw
  4.  Bayley Fritsch
  5.  Max Gawn
  6.  Mitch Hannan
  7.  James Harmes
  8.  Michael Hibberd
  9.  Marty Hore
  10.  Jayden Hunt
  11.  Neville Jetta
  12.  Nathan Jones
  13.  James Jordan
  14.  Jay Kennedy-Harris
  15.   Kade Kolodjashnij
  16.   Jake Lever
  17.   Steven May
  18.   Oscar McDonald
  19.   Tom McDonald
  20.  Jake Melksham
  21.  Alex Neal-Bullen
  22.  Aaron Neitschke
  23.  Clayton Oliver
  24.  Christian Petracca
  25.  Harrison Petty
  26.  Braydon Preuss
  27.  Christian Salem
  28.  Joel Smith
  29.  Charlie Spargo
  30.  Tom Sparrow
  31.  Billy Stretch
  32.  Aaron Vandenberg
  33. Jack Viney
  34. Joshua Wagner
  35.  Sam Weideman
  36.
  37.
  38.

     39.

     40.

Rookies

Cat A

  1.  Kade Chandler
  2.  Kyle Dunkley
  3.  Jay Lockhart
  4.  Corey Wagner

Cat B

·       1. Austin Bradtke*

Possible Delistings

  1. Jay Kennedy-Harris
  2. Billy Stretch

Draft Selections

 3, 8, 97, 115,  133,

So the state of play is we currently have 35 senior players and have to at least take 3 national draft selections or 2 and upgrade one rookie to the senior list. This gets the squad to 38 senior listed players.  If we delist Kennedy-Harris and Stretch then we need to fill the senior list with a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 7 players via the national draft, rookie upgrades, delisted free agents or the pre-season draft.

*unsure if Bradtke re-signed as a cat B rookie or if has been moved to category A

While it is unlikely, the club can have 40 senior players, 6 'A' rookies and 2 'B' rookies.

We have 37 including Tomlinson and Langford so 3 senior vacancies, 5 if both if JKH and Stretch are delisted.  There is a thread pinned at the top of the main forum that tracks our list position.  Today it will be updated for our draft position.

I wouldn't be surprised if the club has 38/39 at the end of the drafts you mention keeping a spot(s)open for the supplemental draft that ends in March to add a player like we did Lockhardt last year.

Cheers @Lucifer's Hero for the info, should have gone to bed earlier as I completely overlooked Langdon and Tomlinson. Was also unaware we could still have 6 cat A rookies with a full squad of 40 and forgot about the supplemental draft in March. These players get added to the rookie list yes? It appears I'm too late to edit the original post so I'll post it again with the correct senior list this time.  Happy for this to be merged into the other thread or deleted all together.

So the state of play is we currently have 37 senior players and have to at least take 3 national draft selections or 2 and upgrade 1 to the senior list. If we delist Kennedy-Harris and/or Stretch we can opt to have another 1/2 players onto our senior list either via the national draft, rookie upgrades, delisted free agents and pre-season draft.

Does anyone think we'll hold on to one of Stretch or JKH, or will we move on from both and look to add a delisted free agent (eg. Jack Newnes) instead?

Good post.  I think Billy Stretch should be retained as he runs and runs. Running mids are required in our team.   I think his deficiencies can be coached and decision making solved.
I’m not sure JKH fits into the team as a mid or a small forward. Probably delisted in next week or two.

Agree on Newnes as a out of contract player.  Size and pace to make it to our best 22.

Where's the evidence of this? I thought it was 44 players max on the senior and Cat A list. 38/6, 39/5 or 40/4. Then up to 3 cat B rookies.

You can add more rookies as the season goes on if you place guys on the long term injury/retired inactive lists. But to start the season it's 44.

Yes. Five spots available.  Look to get 1-2 delisted free agents.

I think we will. Murray has been mentioned and they are probably assessing others.

JKH and Stretch are gone. We can expect Wagner to be upgraded to the main list I think. So two live draft picks, one rookie upgrade and we have two spots still up for grabs.

One of those is probably the guy from Collingwood.

Hopefully the other is Martin or Bennell.

With JKH and Stretch now being removed from the list, that's another 2 spots that need to be filled.

Must be close to signing a DFA or two.

It’s tough life for an AFL player and List Manager for that matter...!!!

So that makes 35 on the senior list so it’s 3, 4 or 5 spots to fill depending on whether we want 38, 39 or 40 on the senior list.

l think we will end up splitting pick 3 by the time national draft night arrives. So that would take us to 38. We rerookie the existing 4 A`s as none stand out to me as likely to be targeted by other clubs. The remaining 2 or more spots comes from a combination of psd draft pick/s (probably one of newnes/martin) and potentially more A rookie/s. Do we have any Casey vfl players in contention this year?

Posted (edited)

So 5 potential spots on the list gives us a bit of an idea of the parameters of what might happen over the next couple of weeks.

From what I'm reading some think Young is close to Anderson standard with an elite kick which is exactly what we need. I doubt we'd split 3 and give him up. None of the rest sound like they are close to that standard. I think it's more likely we'll split 8. Pick trading is live now until 22 Nov and then on draft nights. So guessing we'll end up with 3 picks in the draft with one of the existing picks and one turned into 2.

All players left on the list are contracted so more delistings will happen. It's still been 9 list changes which is a lot really including 5 from the primary list with 2 replacements.

If we take 3 in the draft it leaves the list at 38 so I'm guessing there will be at least one DFA (I'm guessing Murray for pace. Swans rated him very highly but some say he's a terrible kick. I don't know.) and possibly one rookie upgrade as we have 4 rookies now and 1 Cat B with Bradtke.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
