How did rate the first year Demons?

Tom Sparrow

James Jordon

Aaron Nietschke

Marty Hore

Toby Bedford

Kade Chandler

Corey Wagner

Jay Lockhart

Austin Bradtke

Kyle Dunkley

I think we done very poorly in that draft Hore was ok but the rest were poor. Hopefully we can do a lot better this year.

Hore grew and grew as the year went on. He looks like he could become a decent defender for us long term.

Lockhart showed some fight and goal scoring ability. With a preseason he could become dangerous.

Jordon started coming good in the VFL late in the year playing as an inside midfielder as opposed to half back flank.

The rest of them really didn’t show anything. Hoping Sparrow and Nietschke can get back from their injuries and have good seasons next year. Not much to write home about though. Weak draft by us after giving up high picks again.

Hore is a very good mature-age pick-up.  Goodwin seemed reluctant to play him and Lever in the same backline, so hopefully there’s a role for him down there in the future.

Lockhart did exceptionally well for someone with no AFL preseason or conditioning.  To step straight in and play as well as he did, showed he’s got some talent and heart.  No surprises that he ran out of puff though.

All the kids... was good for three of them to get some games experience.  We’ll know more in 2 years.

Sparrow.  Looked ok in debut game and has solid build.  Injury ruined his season eventually

Jordan. Good mover. Liked his skills. Disposal by foot is important.

Nietschke.  Knee injury.

Hore. Yes very good year. Will be part of our backline next year.

Bedford. Always going to be a developer.  Must build up over the preseason.

Chandler. Just ok. Surprised to see him debut.

Corey Wagner. Took his chances. 50/50 for next year. Good goal sense.

Jay Lockhart. I like him. Got heart and very good AFL type intensity. Gets another year.

Dunkley.  Got a taste and not disgraced. Solid debut but will need to run and run and build himself in off season. Potential but still a huge gap to reach AFL standard weekly.

Looking at that analysis of our first year players All I can say is that they look really like they might be really good down the track at some stage really!

What is it with Melbourne assistant coaches overuse of the qualifier “really”? This has been going on for 10 years or more. Really gives me the Shytes!

Really?

Lockhart looks a player. Hore was ok.

Hard to tell from the rest. At first glance it’s a poor draft. I pray Dunkley ends up as good as his brother.

I think Sparrow and Jordan are half a chance and maybe a couple of others in there might improve. None of them were particularly high draft picks. Nothing suicidal with them .

Terribly underwhelming at this stage. Bedford & Chandler were late picks, but neither will make it. I would delist one this year and one next year.

Wagner, Lockhart & Dunkley are pretty similar players to each other and to a type that we are already oversupplied with. There is no great point of difference with any of them. I suspect we won't keep all three.

Hore exceeded expectations, but I agree that we can't play he and Lever in the same side.

Nietschke was a left field selection who has lost a full year to injury. Expectations will be low for next year.

Yet to see anything from Sparrow or Jordon even at VFL level that suggests they will be anything special.

I rate Sparrow way ahead of the rest. Hore would be next.

Absolutely hilarious,  Bedford and Jordon are teenagers who hadn't played against men beforen

Did you actually see either play?

Sparrow will be a good solid AFL player or could exceed expectations

Nietschke is a running machine who will now have a rehab and full pre season under his belt, they alsp paired him with Nev to 'educate' him, also built his body whilst in rehab

Chandler is a good small forward, who will only get better

I can't be bothered covering the rest, as you seem to have no idea

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
