Why? Because yarra park is a brilliant idea. One oval is fine for Pete's sake (no issue for th Magpies it would seem) and having our gym, medical stuff, recovery, footy department and admin all in one place will be awesome.

Not to mention a space for fans and members. A MFC owned bar above jolimont station would make a fortune - and not just from dees fans. It would be packed every time  there was any event at the G. A natural meting place. We would also have a place for the demon shop. 

The Hawks are going to Dingley, which is not all that far from their current base and there is much to play out in terms of the viability of the project. The Bombers facility might be great but it is miles from anywhere and has costed an arm and a leg. it also does nothing in terms of a base for their fans.

I got the election call right OD and i reckon i'll be right on Yarra park.It. Will. happen.

All about future proofing Binman...

The Yarra park solution is better than we have (almost nothing) but it will be miles behind what the big clubs develop in the near future.

EFC have an enormous indoor facility in which you can kick a football for example. Collingwood have spent big money on the old pool site but I suspect the architectural constraints of the place have limited them. If they had their time over again I think they would be elsewhere.

Richmond is the unknown. Good facilities at Punt road but not really 21st century facilities. Richmond with their success and membership base (especially if they can hook their members onto the pre reserved seats merry go round) will soon be rolling in money.

Social clubs are dead unless you can think of a use for them on the other 340 days of the year.

Here's a site showing the training grounds for the EPL clubs. Not suggesting we have the money they have but the most recently built training facility is for Tottenham. Worth a look. It's about 30k from their home ground.

A couple of points. I didn't mention a social club. I said a bar owned by the mfc. In use all the time. Did you ever go to the old Hilton pub (directly opposite jolimont)? Game days it was packed to the rafters before and after demons games. Just as the cricketers arms is on any game day. A decent bar one train station to the city would always do well, particularly in a a practically dry area.

Secondly, a purpose built space would include all the bells and whistles and we would make income from the office space. 

And one oval is enough. As the tigers, pies etch have shown.

I'll bet players don't want to drive to outer woop woop eirher.

to do that we would need to pay commercial value for the land... East Melbourne is amongst the highest value per square foot in Melbourne.

Makes you wonder then why  savvy, switched on operators like Glen Bartlett and Peter Jackson, after presumably considering all of the facts and relevant considerations, decided yara park was their preferred option.

My feelings are too fold.

Yarra park will be too hard due to political / Greenie problems. 

Second I don't care where it is really. As long as the players get good facilities and are happy. Yarra park, Casey, Goschs paddock or somewhere in between.

What the average supporter needs is running a bad last IMO.

Despite the enthusiasm of Binman (which I share), the initial concept is focussed on players and administration rather than a gathering place for the MFC faithfull. There is still a fair bit of concept work to go as I understand and hopefully the patient MFC membership base can end up with a high profile facility next to the “G” which they can own rather than share with other codes. My belief is that it will include components which will benefit the local community rather than merely the Club’s football operations and have a positive outcome for the local area. It is the most appropriate position by a long shot and it has merit on planning grounds which hopefully the Club can elucidate to convince East Melbourne/Richmond that it is a Win/Win proposal!

Adelaide spent $16M on their facility at AAMI park in 2008.

While there is a hard cap on players and soft cap on footy dept spend, there is no limit to facilities spend.

Big clubs can spend away, little clubs fall further behind. The Dogs, Norths, Saints, GWS, Suns and us of the world lag behind in that space.

The greens power is getting less, they will soon go the way of the Democrat party, before the election labour did not know how much they would win by now they don't need the greens, the greens have gone from 5 to 1 member in the upper house, the liberals are so weak now they won't have a reason to oppose yarra park,  labour might approve funding for yarra park now.

This club has to lose its fear of having a go.   Most millionaires have gone broke at some time in their lives. 

Big businesses get government's to bend for them, so they can prosper.

 

Yet the Mfc quiver when it comes to big money & being entrepreneurial.   If we can't find a Sugar-Daddy or some Benneyfactor... we wither away in the dark corner of the party.

 

This has to change... or we stay just as we've been the past 50 Yrs.

If we had a different nature as a club, it would be us in the old Olympic Swimming Centre...  instead of Ol Fatface Ed & his lot.

We have only our own conservative small Inward Thinking for this weak culture of NoN-Progress...  for the past half century, and being tied to the Mcc apron strings for so long, like an illegitimate child, is what caused this Club Impotence.

 

We've been fortunate that the AFL came a running this time to our Aid and bailed us out with PJ and Roosy, & to a degree, Goody as well.

 

Our Home Base is the most important thing, to build our own Independent Identity... away from & out of the shadow of the Mcc.  Cut the Apron-Strings, and stand Tall, Proud & Independent.

I get the feeling it will be the new arms race.

One thing protecting us perhaps is that with the soft cap on the football department spend the mega facility can become uneconomic in that the bigger the facility the more staff you need to employ to maximise the utility of the facility. For those in the know what goes under this cap. For example the groundskeepers and the cleaners would be outside the cap but are the dieticians and the kitchen staff within?

No !!!  We don't want apron strings.

Or we will never grow up as a club.   We can stand side by side... as equals with the Mcc.   But definately not with apron strings. 

Or we will always be the illegitimate son.  And our fears will always be cast in stone,  just as Peter-Pan always remained as he ever was.

We have to make the change to become an Elder of the building........ just like the Pies are, and the Tigers are, and the Bummers are.

 

This is an attitudinal thing of independence.  Maybe like when young Murdoch broke away from his dad Rupert, and returned home to Australia with his wife, years back.

 Now young Murdoch is creating his own way in the wide world.  He's not a boy under his dads spell any longer.  He IS his own master.

 

This is what Melbourne has to become, so it can make the big decisions at board level... and why our boards of the past have failed us all.  

Because the club in the past didn't have the balls... and so neither did its boards.  A lack of courage & commitment. due to having been 'treated' by a Sugar-Daddy.

 

We go forward as equal partners with the Mcc... or we won't go forward, at all.

The point is... to stand tall, you have to one day step out of the shadow your in.   We have never done that and in the 50's it didn't matter so much, as we had  the MCG to ourselves Re footy... & fire brimstone coaches who knew what they were about.

But the world started changing, players got payed more, and political correctness started to become a thing, and a sort of war against the old world ways started simmering.

 

Educated people/admins were becoming precious and scheming. and more vindictive.  The world changed, just as it did in the politics we see today around the world.

 

We, have never stood up... and so we have reaped just what we sowed... very little.

Whilst other clubs risked all... put it all on the line,  gambled and Won, and Lost some times,  but all the while, their clubs grew. they recovered their losses, and grew again.

 

I want to say just one thing about this... "Nothing Ventured"....

 

Let's fight for OUR  In-deependance.
