    Carlton are doing surprisingly well considering Hawthorn. Weather also likely influences these results.

    Correct me if I'm wrong but Carlton have only played 2 home games against non local clubs and they have been:

    v Sydney in round 3 - a game they could've won and would've felt somewhat positive going in to
    v Brisbane a few weeks ago after sacking a new coach.

    The old South Melbourne and Fitzroy fans would've made a nice boost to those attendances. I've seen a heap of Lions fans around whenever they've played in Melbourne this year.

    Port - 38,886 - excellent round 1 crowd
    GWS - 20023 - not a good crowd but we were 3-6
    Freo - 20211 - solid enough for a team at 3-9

    Would be nice to up that minimum crowd to more like 25,000 but given our struggles it's not terrible if we're above 20k.

    The Hawks sample is one game only that was played on Mothers Day. The other games against "non local" teams by the Hawks are played in Tasmania and therefore outside the table.

    Bulldogs figures include their games at Ballarat which has a max capacity of 10k.

    Last year we played GWS at the MCG in front of 40k.

    This year we barely scrapped 20k. 

    This is what bad football does. It is to branding and growth as cancer is to the human body.

    For the sake of this club I hope 2019 is the outlier in a new era. If 2018 were the outliner in a common trend, then we're in trouble.

    Lots of pressure now on the football department and players to deliver. We can't afford another Bailey-Neeld era. It would absolutely devastate the club.

    Weather was grim for Freo too.

    Not sure that the Victorian public have quite caught onto the growing strength of the Eagles and Crows balance sheet wise. They both have closed membership lists and waiting lists for reserved seats. In addition they have strong stadium deals.

    The only saving grace is that their licences are owned by the respective State leagues and they are obliged to invest in the local leagues (WAFL etc).

    Freo and Port are not in the same boat but they will benefit over time from the fan lock out of the two bigger home teams.

    The Tasmanian team position is interesting. By appointing their inquiry/commission the AFL have kicked the can down the road for a year or two but you really have to question the role of the Suns not to mention GWS who aren't kicking any goals on the attendance scoreboard despite their relative success. (GWS will survive simply because it is Sydney but you have to wonder why they cannot attract the crowds.)

    On the Suns, I heard their CEO arguing on radio that a team like the Suns needed permanent structural drafting/salary cap priority to obtain equalisation.

    Our average was inflated by our Port rd 1 game of 40K when all the red and blue army had premiership dreams.

    Play that game this week and we'd be lucky to get 23K and would be below St Kilda on the OP's table.

    round 1 tends to draw big crowds regardless. i remember we got 30k round 1 vs GC in 2015. After ending 2014 with 10 straight losses and equal last.

      Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

      The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day.       It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
