Should be interesting

The Front Bar played a clip of him inviting the ladies to come down to a pub for some drinks, after the night grand final victory on the podium. Did they come?

Fantastic

IIRC he and Jim were among the first dual ruck combinations.

While interchange was first introduced in 1978  the third interchange player was not introduced until 1994.

This made it difficult to play two dedicated big men.

Would be interesting to hear about the tactics and the role of the "resting ruckman".

His game against Simon Madden at Windy Hill in 1990 was incredible

both players left teeth in the middle...

I was living in a house share in Kew, Surrey back in the late nineties / early noughties. One time we had a fancy dress halloween party when the next door neighbour turned up in our kitchen at around 1am. Turns out it was Strawbs' brother and we had a nice old chat about our run to the finals in back '87 and him missing the '88 GF. His young son came around to clear away all the empty bottles the next morning for a tenner.

Those sides with the names Grinter and O’Dwyer on the team sheet really gave us an unsociable edge at that time. Strawbs was a frightening specimen to behold in full angry pills mode.

We were a better team when Strawbs was first ruck. His aggression and tap work were far superior to Jimmy's and gave our mids first dibs. Jimmy, of course, covered the ground better than anyone playing as a tall midfielder.

Question: is he wearing underpants in the above photo or are they actually shorts.

Great get. Was one of my favourite players as a kid. If I remember correctly he wasn't always #1. I think he was #32 when he began his career. I wonder if he thinks we should be playing Gawn and Preuss in the same side?

I loved hearing from Strawbs. It was great to hear that he's still a Demon. Thanks for the interview guys.

Great interview with Steve. Nice guy.

Thanks guys for a great chat. Pity he didn’t talk about Windy Hill 1990.

It truly was an amazing game.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.

  • GAMEDAY: West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
