It doesn’t matter how much involved an ex player is in their old Club if their offspring has no talent.  Look, I don’t mind the romanticism of Father Son, in fact, it is probably the only inequity that I could live with.  Are you saying to me that it doesn’t pizz you off that Collingwood, Essendon, etc never have to play Geelong in Geelong?  That nearly every year the NSW & Qld Clubs have access to an Academy player for a Draft Pick much higher than that players true worth?  That Collingwood make a Grand Final last year off a very soft Draw because we have such a compromised Fixture?

Actually, none of that stuff annoys me. I'm yet to see a team win the Premiership because of those advantages. And for what it's worth, I don't think Collingwood made the Grand Final because of a "soft draw". They still had to win two finals, including one against Richmond, to get there.

Absolutely @longsuffering.

I remember sitting through some miserable performances as a 5/6 yo in 85/86 and just pulling my beanie down over my eyes hoping that when I took it back up the team would somehow start turning the game around.  I have almost the same feeling at times this season.

But then we turned it around in 87 and 88 with a desperate workmanlike team, hungry for success, only to be heart broken.  The nineties so full of potential yet tuned out to be total frustration.  I'd rather forget most of this century.

The last couple of years have continued the roller-coaster ride and whilst I thought it was unlikely we would walk into a premiership this year in a cake walk, I've been really taken back by just how poor we have been to date.

I despise the current negativity around the team and consider our present performances as something more of a temporary frustration and disapointment than a more permanent imparement.  These trials and tribulations will make that elusive next flag all the sweeter when it finally comes.

For the real MFC supporters, Every Heart does indeed beat true for the red and blue.

Living interstate, I can't make it down to training on Friday, but will certainly be doing everything I can to cheer on the team down at Carrara in a few weeks and later in the year at the Gabba.

CARN THE MIGHTY DEMONS!!

Hope to join you there at Carrara being a temporary Queenslander. Go Dees!

I've been much like you,  'Gg',  for the past 5Yrs or so... maybe longer ?

it started to hit me around 05 - 06 ish...  but still had some hope with the rebuild following those Yrs.

Jnr Mc's saaaaaaaaaforced retirement irked me.

And we went ahead,  and got it all wrong...  the club stuffed it again,  with how they went about it.  Kept the ones they should have traded for value,  and retired ones they should have kept.

Then ended up getting fined,  because of the unsophisticated way they went.

I hated the congested footy,  flood,  press,   what ever name invented this week, for it.   bullls-shizen.   It strangled the natural flow and randomness of the games instinctive styles.

Now it looks more like 2004 again... to a point.

But once again the Mfc has been let down by the timing of the AFL.

Why is it that the Suits seem to hate the  Melbournefc... whether it be the AFL,  or others oof control...  and now it looking like the Libs giving collinwood $M70 zillion dollars,  to upgrade their admin/training complex.

And the Mfc are still homeless orphans,  still... & again.

.

Hey DV8 - I'm interested in your last point, and I'm wondering whether you (or anybody else) could fill me in. Like you, I despair at us being "homeless orphans" - I think it's been a critical factor in our long-term failure. Just about everybody else seems to have somewhere to call home. A spiritual base.

I was horrified to see the Libs giving all that money to the Pies too. Geelong and the Dogs have also received vast amounts of taxpayer money recently. Sydney too, I think.  (The Dogs are now campaigning to get home games again, and Kardinia Park is an almost invincible base for the Cats)   It all seems so dispiriting. Watching our guys train at Gosch's Paddock is degrading. We're the bloody team that invented the game, and we have to make do with these jerry-built affairs.

I'm wondering whether somebody could advise me whether our club is doing anything about improving the situation? What are our club's long-term plans? Do we have a long-term plan? Is there any cause for hope? I looked on the club website, but couldn't see anything (maybe I missed it - I couldn't even find where our offices are)

I hope we have got a plan. A goal. I've noticed other teams developing new homes for themselves in recent years. I know it's a huge cost, but you have to start somewhere (I'm a volunteer with the CFA -  our little brigade has a kind of twenty year plan to buy a new tanker - it's been a massive effort - we only seem to raise $5-10000 a year, but we're nearly there)

Cheers

It's said,  the club is searching to build a home base/training/office... social base ?

This, Is my hope >>>

My hope is on Olympic Boulevard,  abutting the Richmond Railway Station... &  opposite Gosch's Paddock.  Straddling Olympic Boulevard.

Built across Olympic Boulevard... and over to Gosch's Paddock.   And built about 3 or 4 levels above ground.   And one basement level.

So the Nth side of the building would abut the Richmond Railway Station. and this section should be about 3 or 4,  above ground levels...  with basement level for cars, etc,  Northern side of Olympic Boulevard.

... and the Southern side of building would be just overhanging the edge of Gosch's Paddock.  I would think the section built across the roadway should be a lower in height profile.... so as to not fully obscure AAMI Parks beautiful design features.  Possibly two levels across the roadway.  One level of Glazedi-In indoor facilities, and an open-air rooftop area... so as to minimize the height of this part of the project.

The Western side of the dee-velopment,  ideally would  overhang the nearest of the Clay tennis courts.

Being in this location,  beside the Richmond Station,  is the fairest location to all supporters...  Especially considering our regional supporters, who have hours to travel,  To and Fro.

Never seen anything before or since to match the crowd support as the Dees of 87 did their warm up lap, nice and slow to soak it all in in the first final in 23 years. Not even sure a flag will match that for me. If we ever do win a flag I will go to the very spot I was as a seven year old when we won in 64 and try and do my best drop kick in what was a paddock and now is a patch of bitumen.

Right with you, SK.

Was there wiff me Dad. Had a kick inside the fence. Spoke to Norm the Smith, and he smiled. Ate a Four'nTwenty and had a cup of orange cordial.

Screamed at the MFC players "Carna Demons!!!" so hard that it took me a week to get my voice back and the kids at Skool called me 'Froggy'.

Totally dizzy with the win riding back home in our car - all the way to Glen Iris.

It was better than being at the 'G in '56 to watch the Olympic track and field. I concentrated on the drop kick at every opportunity since that day. Thanks for the memories.

Im the same @Gorgoroth, I really cbf with the AFL and the direction it's taking

I will always support the Dees and pay my membership but I don't want to go to games or watch or support anything the AFL is doing.

I suddenly have realised how some of the older generations feel, the game is changing and we won't even recognise it in 5 - 10 years.

We seemed determined to go down the American path of FA and selling out for the almighty dollar so gil and the players can fill their pockets.

I will give anyone $10000 who can convince me a night GF is all about the footy and not the tv/corporate revenue it will make the AFL

I just hope we can win a flag before it turns into Gaelic football

I think my topic got "off topic" but it has been brilliant reading all the good memories that some of us still have.

The weather is going to be ok tomorrow so hopefully we can get some stragglers down to Gosch's tomorrow. The players will be thrilled with any support that might turn up. It must be getting boring with just old Saty hanging over the fence.(Sorry Saty not so much of the old.)

Other people are not the answer to our predicament Jara.  And certainly not Josh.

The answer lays at our feet,  IMO.

... In other words,  IF  'WE'  have the Dee-sire...   then it Will become a fact.

If we do Not,  and we wish to remain the Mcc's orphan,  then that  'IS'  what will happen.

The answer is within all Our collective Hearts.   To Be,  Or Not,  to Be.

...............................................................................................................................

Now what we do know Is...  that Punt Rd is due for a Major Upgrade...  for traffic flow

If you look again at the Google map link  > -  https://www.google.com/maps/place/112+Olympic+Blvd,+Melbourne+VIC+3004/@-37.8245886,144.9846351,1247m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x6ad642943affc621:0x23259ce926eaf48e!8m2!3d-37.8245886!4d144.9868238

Look at the position of the Training Oval inside Gosch's paddock, abutting Punt Rd.

1/...  One thing they might have in mind,  could be to take over the Petrol Station just across Punt Road...  my reason is,  i believe Punt Rd will be widened on the East side of the road???  taking away part of the Petrol Stations property,  making it obsolete.

Maybe this position could be developed into a Dee-Quarters.

2/...  Or,  the other position...  as has been mentioned before;  is to the Sth of the Gosch's Paddock training Oval...  on the Google map...  that Triangle of land abutting both Punt Rd and the Sth-East freeway.

IF we made our HQ on this Triangular Plot... maybe we could also buy the building across Punt Rd ?   >>>   https://www.google.com/maps/@-37.8284668,144.9880527,3a,75y,88.21h,96.39t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sofKzACIlQwJROPRSNCNRFw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

.........................................................................................................................................

My preference is still to Build across Olympic Boulevard...  abutting the Richmond Railway Station...  and  'cantilevered'  over the Nth edge of Gosch's Paddock playing surface.

For the simple reason that its just so much more practical socially...  regarding transiting between the site,  and peoples work &/or home... And to go to the Mcg  Pre-Game,  after meeting up at our social club on game days.

The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
