Watched this fella and to be frank - he’s average.

The discussion at the time on Demonland (when announced Carlton) was how he could be that outside runner, good in front of goal player we need, etc blah blah d dah blah and we should shaft them in the PS draft.

I know it’s a bit revisionist but given this example, I think our list management right now is as best as it’s been for a long, long while.

I’m glad they don’t jump at shadows like a lot us of do.

It happens regularly.

Average player comes on to the trade market. Demonland goes feral - we must secure x, y and z.

Melbourne heirarchy lambasted for not chasing them or winning them over.

Average player does stuff all for new club except ruin their salary cap and the team payments balance.

Our recent drafting has shown cunning, guile and longer term vision. Landon and lever are probably the standouts along with May.

I was glad we reach out to him, and I’m glad he stonewalled us. I want player who want to be at the Dees, not guys that see a pay check. I said it in my last post, he and Carlton were made for each other.

I think this is the key to it.

Having watched a fair bit of Martin in the past and having seen what he can produce, I still think he can be an elite player in the same mold as Charlie Cameron is at the Lions.  But he certainly isn't delivering value for money at the moment.

Really glad our list management team seems to apply a such a mature approach to picking and choosing which players we chase hard and are prepared to offer good, but not ridiculous money too.

Hibbard, Lever, May, Langdon, Tomlinson all have such great character that go along with what I assume are reasonably priced salaries.  From what I recall, Lever and May are on pretty decient coin, but it's not the stupid big highest bidder type money either.  I'd imagine they could both have attracted a far bigger pay check elsewhere.  As another asides, there is a lesson in all this for the Weid too I think and I actually personally get the impression that it's not lost on him.

Unless Martin can eradicate the softness from his game and his inability to win contested footy, he won't be anywhere near elite IMO. Charlie Cameron is a very good contested player. Martin is average. I just don't see it. I'm glad Carlton sunk more coin into more average, just like Williams and Saad.

He had some of the biggest wraps you'll ever see on a player in the lead up to the mini-draft.  It's unbelievable the hyperbole thayt gets written about kids at the time of year.  The media (and internet pundits) feed off each others hypes and you end up with a Tom Boyd style report where he somehow became better and better through an U18 year where he barely played.

He doesn't look completely engaged to me; perhaps disenchanted with moves to two clubs that promised the world and have delivered next to nothing (other than a huge stack of cash).  He's reluctant to make contact, perhaps due to the fact that every time he tried that at GC, he got injured.  Not a true midfielder, not a particularly great forward, he plays as a small utility and doesn't really excel anywhere.

I'll admit, I was keen to get him to the Dees, fooled into thinking he was a good player in a poor team.
The reality is he's just: 'meh'.

People rate him very harshly, but I think that's the price you pay when you put your hand up for the huge contracts and make very public trade demands.

Plenty of talent.

Not committed enough for mine, hence not fit enough to make the most of his talent

I was big on getting him if he was keen but not on big money and obviously only if he was committed. Especially noting be would only cost $$ and not picks. I remember being disappointed when he didn't even take our phone calls.

He's a very talented player and has played some great games as a hff which I think is his best spot and where he is playing at the moment for the blues.

He's not ever going to rack up big numbers in this role but still, at present hes been very disappointing and looks like he could be wasting his career at the blues. I think he'd look like a rockstar at a decent team.

If I was him I'd be filthy with the decision I'd made in going to the Blues over us.

Thankfully he chased the big bag of cash at the blues.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
