Viney and Jones to play VFL as per stevoooooo.

Probably both of minutes restrictions, let’s them have a look at the depth guys under AFL conditions as well. They might play VFL next week as well.

My guess of the 26:

Backs (8): May, Hibberd, Jetta, Lewis, Hore, Oscar, Hunt, Frost

Mids (9): Gawn, Oliver, Gus, Harmes, Brayshaw, Salem, Vanders, Fritsch, JKH

Utility: Keilty (plays 2nd half to rest Gawn and T Mc more)

Forwards (8): T Mc, Weid, Melksham, Petracca, Spargo, ANB, J Smith, C Wagner

Pruess in the VFL?

I thought the coaching staff would've preferred to see another sample of the 'Prawn' ruck combo before round 1.

Excited to see May in the red and blue though!

Interesting that Viney, Jones and Melksham will play a practice game at VFL level. (Does anyone have details of the other team and time etc.)

I like it as it gives Stretch and JKH another chance to push for a spot in the last JLT.

Wonder who will be the relief ruck for Gawn at AFL level.... Keilty??

This opens the door up for Declan Keilty to get another game to show his wares.

Last week they needed to use him as plan B in the ruck. With Max back this week and temperatures a lot milder perhaps he can be played in the forward position he has been training in during the summer and then be used as the relieving ruckman when Max needs a rest.

Goody flags playing 22 or 23. I’d take out JKH, Melksham and Frost from the list I named. Keep Keilty as the 23rd man.

The big challenge is how do you evaluate the guys who play well in the 2’s v the guys who might not do well in the main game. Hannan and Brayshaw have come in to the round 1 based on vfl form in years previous.

Casey are also playing the Brisbane Lions according to the VFL site is that correct? Isn't that a bit unusual to play a team not in the VFL??

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT by Paddy Gosch

The Demons have named a star studded line up in it’s final practice match before the season proper. They take on the emerging Brisbane Lions out at Casey which is the second of three matches at the ground on Saturday. Many of the Dees best 22 have been recalled including Vice Captains Max Gawn and Neville Jetta whilst Captains Nathan Jones and Jack Viney will play restricted minutes in the VFL curtain raiser.

Former Gold Coast co-captain Steven May will play his first official game for Melbourne after recovering from a hamstring injury and will help shore up the Demons defence.

Others who make their returns to the line up are Michael Hibberd, Aaron vandenBerg and Jordan Lewis whilst Jake Melksham will also be on restricted minutes in the reserves.

Small forward Jeff Garlett has been ruled out of the clash with the Lions after suffering a shoulder injury in a clash with Alex Rance last Sunday. Surgery was not required but Jeff will still miss between 4 to 6 weeks whilst he recovers.

Other players still sidelined with injuries are Kade Kolodjashnij (adductor), Mitch Hannan (knee), Jake Lever (knee) and Aaron Nietschke (knee). Demonland track watchers observed that Tim Smith was not present at training on Wednesday fuelling speculation that the calf injury that he appeared to sustain at training the prior week which forced him to miss JLT 01 will keep him out of JLT 02 as well.

AFL reporter Ben Guthrie confirmed this on Twitter further stating that Smith will miss at least 3 weeks further adding that it’s “bad luck for a player who was pushing for a berth in round one.”

Guthrie also revealed that Braydon Preuss was set for a stint in the VFL as “part of his development”. Preuss was underwhelming in his first up solo rucking game for the Demons after a strong start the week earlier as partner to Max Gawn against the Magpies. With Preuss set to miss it gives Declan Keilty another chance after he impressed many onlookers with his leap and tap work.

The Dees main midfielders Angus Brayshaw, Clayton Oliver & James Harmes have another week to continue to grow the synergy they’ve been building. They racked up an astonishing 90 possessions between them. When you add Salem and Petracca to the mix with 27 and 22 possessions respectively and ample supply from a returning Max Gawn it’s not hard to see why this midfield is fast becoming the envy of many teams.

Bayley Fritsch continued where he left off after an impressive first year in 2018. He amassed 26 touches on the wing where his forward 50 delivery shined.

Harrison Petty showed a lot to like with some of his intercept marking in defence. Petty's only game in 2018 was a disappointing match against St. Kilda after which he was relegated back to the twos for the remainder of the year. He demonstrated that he can fill a position in defence for the Dees and is good depth for the team and an exciting prospect given that Jake Lever will not return until midway through the season.

With Steven May making his debut in the line up this week it will be interesting to see who of Marty Hore, Petty  & Sam Frost makes the cut as they have all been named on an extended bench which is likely to be whittled down by Saturday.

Brisbane were impressive in JLT 01 albeit against an undermanned Hawthorn. The Lions were busy in the offseason and 3 of their new recruits in Lachie Neale, Jarryd Lyons and Lincoln McCarthy all starred in their 42 point win.  Former number one draft pick Cam Rayner was lively in the forward half booting 3 goals and ruckman Archie Smith had a strong outing.

On the injury front Charlie Cameron left the field during the 3rd quarter of last week’s match but Brisbane claimed that it was just a cramp. Marcus Adams (Knee), Tom Fullarton (Hamstring), Darcy Gardiner (Knee), Nick Robertson (Hamstring), Connor McFayden (Foot) and Jack Payne (Tibia) are all unavailable. Stefan Martin played for the Lions NEAFL team last week after returning from a series of niggling injuries and has been recalled to the senior team to face his former club.

The Demons go into this game with a strong line up and coach Simon Goodwin has stated that he will play 23 players in order to simulate the regular season game day. Which 3 on the extended bench won't make the cut?

Much stronger defence this week with May, Jetta and Hibberd you’d expect we won’t leak goals as badly as JLT1

WHY hasn’t Baker been given a run this JLT series? Anyone’s update is on that? Strange not to experiment with Gawn and Preuss in tandem again. Given that McDonald was woeful up forward last week. I would have liked to see the twin towers in together. A little confused, but it’s all about rd 1 I spose.

Stoked Keilty is getting another run at it. Much stronger team this week, at a home ground should see us have a good hit out.

Even the boys playing in the VFL will be good to watch.

Will dec be that 2nd ruck/forward on the weekend mate?

Good on him for really putting himself in front of the selection committee as well. Im sure he will be discussed heavily come round 1.

Baker only came in to full training about the same time as Melk. Not sure he was ready. Would’ve liked to see him play.

No point playing the twin towers after last week. Preuss isn’t a dominant back up, there’s no reason to see him forward more. Keilty might be worth another look or used to spell the talls, otherwise Weideman will do the job backing up Gawn. Not sure how McDonald being poor last week changes that. The forward spread and pressure was bad last week, that’s a more pressing issue.

Preuss' poor performance last week sealed his Round 1 fate. He'll now have to really earn his way back into the team. He may not even get a look in unless Max goes down.

The way they worded it - how he was going back to the VFL as part of his 'development' - may also suggest that he may have played himself out of a spot in the side come Round 1.  If Ryder is fit and they go with the Ryder/Lycett combo then it may save him, otherwise we go in with Gawn and a pinch hitter.

Also, I don't mind them playing Viney, Jones and Melksham at Casey.  They clearly have a plan in mind and pre-season is all about getting things right for the real stuff - the result is meaningless.  As long as the players are fit and ready to go, then I'll be happy.

No doubt about it. He was dropped. He can ask Garlett about what happens to players that don't perform under Goodwin.

  • CASEY: Sydney

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
