Huge game in the context of the AFLW and finals make-up.  Match of the round I'd recon.

I have watched our first two games of the season in recient days.  Standard of the game have been pretty good.  Our ball movement and ball handling has been great and a step above our opponents to date.  Last week against Brisbane our forward line really clicked and we were able to put that dominance on the scoreboard.

From what I can make out, our women's team play a similar game style as the senior men's side - hard contested ball and the good handballs out to running options to play an agressive, attacking forward half brand of football.  Comparitive to some of the other AFLW sides, you can also tell that it's a fairly settled team that has good cohesion and knowledge of how their team mates play.  Was great to seeing the team singing the song with pride and gusto out on the ground at the end of the Lions game.

Looking for more of the same against North - alway good to beat them.

Some good results last night.

Lions ousted Blues from the top two of Conf B.  As GF finalists of the last two years Brisbane are so much more deserving of a finals berth.  They are also more likely to give Conf A teams a challenge during finals.

Adelaide had a convincing win over Freo which really opens up Conf A.  Win today by more than a few points and we go to second.

Interestingly North are not a high scoring side - their excellent %age is on the back of a miserly defence or poor opposition.  In the context of this season North haven't taken a 'scalp' with wins over Carlton, GWS and Bulldogs.  They are gettable!!

Needless to say, we must win today to stay in touch with top 2.

perhaps it needs to stay here a little while post  game as well.

Anyway a very hot day for it and not much shade at Casey. Will be tough conditions.

Go Dees... a big match today

Magpies getting well beaten by the Giants down in Morwell.

Seems that the Magpies are having continuing difficulties scoring much more than ten points.

Not that good for the overall comp

Qtr Time:  Dees 1.0.6 North 1.1.7

Not much sign the wind is having an impact.  Low scoring but good quality game.

We need to make Emma Carney accountable - getting too much of the ball.  And btw she has gone to the Joel Selwood school of milking free kicks:  lifts the elbow and hunches the shoulder to draw a high free.

For some reason we seem to be pushing our forwards a long way up the ground so difficult to get the ball into scoring range.  We played a more balanced field in recent weeks.

Getting dominated now. By the Roos and the umps. So many soft frees going their way and ones missed we should be getting.

This umpiring.

It's the not paying frees that are there. A North goal resulted almost directly from Cat Phillips being held but not paid the free.

Forget the the standard of AFLW footy, the standard of umpriing is diabolical.

Very winnable game from here, just need to tighten up. We seem to be going down the boundary a lot and allowing Norf loose players through the middle on the rebound.

First game I have watched this season, impressed with the standard of disposal, and general play, a couple of great grabs too. Very watchable

Geez its all about Mo Hope and Norf.

Hope we pinch this. We're playing just as well, just not finishing in the forward line.

Umpiring is perplexing

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

  • GAMEDAY: Essendon

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
