I find it amazing that any of our so-called footballers would call for a trade at the end of the year based on the team performing like crud - aren't they all individually and collectively responsible for their cr@p performances  

If this is the reason they want out I say F%^k off out we don't won't pathetic excuse makers anymore at MFC - what we do want is people who can actually perform gameday - Sam is certainly not going close to ticking that box irrespective of the less than perfect delivery inside 50

Time for Sam and many others to prove why they deserve to be an AFL list at all not just ours

    He is a third tall in ability  - not hard to replace and we would not get much for him. Don't think he would be in much demand elsewhere. Would only really work in a team that already has two good tall forwards.

    The highest i50 tackles in 2018 (averages). The No.1 non-Key Forward goal scorer of 2018 of those still on the list ...ranked 4th overall behind T-Mac, Hogan & Kent (average goals per game).

    The only player to lay multiple tackles i50 last night.

    While he may not be the Jeffy of old he still offers some weapons up forward until someone else fills the gap IMO.

    Huh ? He's the third tall in ability who are the other two ? 

    Pretty sure at the start of the season he was being touted as our second key tall behind TMac - we all know how successful that's been for us

    He got lucky in two finals and everyone instantly thinks he's a champion in the making - before those games his body of work was incredibly underwhelming and that form line continues into this season

    Please don't say Preuss is our future as a tall forward target the guy is playing there because he doesn't have the ability or the fitness to ruck a large portion of the game plus our other so-called tall forwards have been a complete waste of space so far this year

    I have had such high hopes for the weed but he has been very disapointing  this year. We do have to try and hang on to him as he is young and has shown he can play.

    Last year he was a good third tall when we had Hogan. He struggles as a first or second tall and played above his ability in the finals, as Did Tmac. This is a good sign but both have been a failure this year.

    Hogan was sitting in the stands for those two finals texting his mates in Perth from memory

    Spent last year hoping he would get back his form, couldn't even impact at Casey , a level at which he should be too fast and too clever for most opposition. Just think he will continue to disappoint. I eventually came to that conclusion by the end of 2018. Since we aren't going anywhere perhaps it time to try some younger players.

    Even before the Geelong final last year I held huge optimism for Sam becoming at least a very good MFC forward.

    His, together with the team as a whole, has been a depressingly awful year so far.

    Of more concern to me with this consistent underperforming is the loss of ability to attract, or even hold star players.

    Six months ago we were “a destination club”: no longer unless the team and the coaching and fitness staff rapidly pull their collective fingers out and start winning and playing attractive watchable footy.

    My comment was in response to your statement below

    I was not a fan of the Hogan trade and like many are totally underwhelmed by what May brings to the table - hope I'm proved wrong in time - not sure I believe people can play "above themselves" btw - you can play or you can't - no doubt you can play below your ability and we have the majority of our team firmly in that camp atm

    You said he was a good third tall when we had Hogan - the reality is that his only two AFL games where he looked like he could potentially make it as a player Hogan was in the stands and it was him and TMac as the talls - stuffed if I know how we won either of those games now based on what we are seeing week to week

    I think he was more confident and had nothing to lose and Tmac playing well helped. The delivery and team play up the ground helped too. I also think other teams not rating him helped.

    Well, they certainly won't be rating him one little bit on his form this year - breakout game coming up from him against the Hawks perhaps :)

    I really don't see Wied as the issue. A 21year old with 20 games in a team who seem to think blind kicks over the shoulder are a viable way forward. Don't forget he was only to be the second tall behind McDonald, who has been so bad he was playing at the other end of the ground last night.

    He might need to play at Casey for some confidence, but career over at Melbourne? Please.

    It would be against the run of play. I do not think we would lose much dropping him and giving someone else the chance of showing what they could do.

    It may be better to see what we can get for him. He does not seem able to do the job we need him to do. I think he tries hard but not enough to hide his liabilities, unco and does not think on his feet. You are right though he is young and may be better in 4-5 years. The question is,  can we afford to carry him that long. I don't think he has shown enough to have a queue waiting to grab him. Perhaps the pies could use him, he could be a third tall there if he is able to get a game. I would swap him for just about any current pie forward in their seniors.

    When are people going to get it thru their heads that if hogan didn't go at the end of last he certainly would be at end of season this year. He requested the trade they obliged to allow him to return home.

    I think he only wanted a trade because he was not wanted here. I heard we were keen to get rid of him rather than have the cost of his next contract. We had him and if he stayed and we had a successful year he may have stayed longer and if not we could have traded him for someone who was fit and could get on the park. We did get overs but so far he has proved he is worth it.

    a fat full back who is injury / report prone  and a Casey player for the wing.

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie? 
      Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG. Unfortunately, performances like these went against the grain of what Melbourne has been producing from virtually midway through 2024 and extending right through to the present day. This is a game between two clubs who have faltered over the past couple of years because their disposal efficiency is appalling. Neither of them can hit the side of a barn door but history tells us that every once in a while such teams have their lucky days or come up against an opponent in even worse shape and hence, one of them will come up trumps in this match.

      Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

      Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start.
