Though I think we zone well. Sometimes we all go for the ball at once with the ball getting away from our control and no one down to mop up. With there small crumbers we could have problem.

Hoping big game and cohesion from Jets, Fritsch and Salem to stop their crumbers and snaps.

When we get it in our backline there can be chaotic ball use. O'mac and Frosty get me laughing with their "creativity".

Maybe I should have been clearer.  We didn’t play well offensively for large parts of the game.  4 qtr defensive effort though.

Were Ok against structured offenses, but mosquito fleets break structures down.

This is why I've been banging on for a few years now, about recruiting some quick hard smalls. 

Spargo's one.  Salem isn't too bad for a flanker,, developing. JKH is handy, but not quite there in speed imo?

 

I think we need 4 quick hard smalls in any ideal 22...  not counting our Nevs and Salems. at this stage

I prefer acceleration. That 5-10 meter explosion can get you to space then composure. Flat speed is good for the chase down but suprise can also be effective. So I would take footy brain over athleticism.

Don't get me wrong speed players make lots of goals, can stop goals, gets to contest, stops and creates overlaps and can break open games.

I love the explosive movement. Fastest from standing start over the 10 meters for me.

Yeah, that's what I interpret, when I think smalls.  That break away pace to gap opponents... and also equally important, is the agility to turn direction quickly, on a 6pence.  -  (see Spargo)  Changes direction of play, spots targets in good positions.

He upsets the flow of Oppo' defenders trying to cover us,,,  by changing the angle of the ball entry, going into F50.

Garlett  could be an x factor can chase is quick can kick goals and has the smarts has been ok in his last two games at Casey. Booted 4 against a side .that we lost to recently in Willy, The selectors will have to suss him out to see if he is switched on for such a big game.

Wait and see.  JKH is certainly a chance as well. Due respect for Charlie S, l wouldn't begrudge him if he held his spot. IMO.

And no change for me. Bring the same pressure and kick straighter and we comfortably account for the scum.

What? I'd prefer him to be a stronger tackler and he can get caught in tight congestion, but in any kind of space he weaves out of traffic and uses the ball perfectly. Probably had the 2 best kicks of the night as well. One straight up the middle, another going back in to the corridor. 

Under really physical pressure he lacks the experience and strength to get out of trouble sure, but otherwise he was one of the few who was composed and not rushing. Salem and Oliver were rushing early, Tracc was spudding it up and Gus was typically for him burning the ball with shonky kicks.

I'd prefer Fritsch on the wing and Smith in the team but Smith's errors with the ball are going to be far worse and I don't quite know who to take out.

Smith is probably their most dangerous ball user and sets up a lot for them. I wouldn't be surprised to see Harmes go to him at stages of the game.

Jones has taken Mitchell (not as damaging as Smith but deserves some respect) before so may do it again. They may run a few through Mitchell like Jones, Viney and at times Harmes.

Burgoine needs the Ablett treatment, he's starting to look his age and needs to feel it.

I can't see either Jones or Tyson running with Smith

This game is more than a chance to progress to a prelim. We talk of hoodoos? This is the biggest of them all. We have been humiliated by Hawthorn time after  time  after time again. Literally  for decades. This is the opportunity for redemption and revenge. Sure in public put out the usual bland platitudes about what a great club they are, how we’ll have to play at a top to have a chance etc etc. But in the inner sanctum focus on how Hawthorn in general and Clarkson in particular, has made us  suffer, made us a total laughing stock. Come the bounce next Friday we tear into them with total ruthlessness.

Makes me think, actually, about the guys we have who are missing finals footy. Hogan probably the big one as he's a massive part of our future. Lever as well, though he's played in a few finals as recently as last year so it's not as pressing. Stretch and Kent the only other potential best 22 players who you'd want getting the experience. Not too bad, really...

Just watched the replay again.

Fritsch's game wasn't bad, so I'll take that back, but he certainly showed he was overawed at times, with a few fumbles that were costly.

1st Quarter:
* Drops an contested mark and puts everyone under pressure at 4.52 to go in the first quarter.
* Slips over with 2.40 to go in the first quarter. Lays a tackle but doesn't impede. Fortunately, ANB is covering.
* By the end of the first quarter, he's taken a nice intercept mark and shown poise to open up the game with a neat kick into the corridor.

2nd Quarter:
* nice neat kick to start the second quarter.
* another effective handball.
* at 13.52 to go, ball watches instead of intercept marking, causing Lewis to hold on to Kelly. Free-kick, Geelong get their first goal and momentum. Should have been away with it.
* a get out kick on his right that works for McDonald. Decent effort.
* 3.07 to go and he let's Kelly mark and run off him, which leads to the free-kick to Menzel that becomes a poster to Geelong after Menegola takes the advantage.
* does well with a handball in the final minute.

3rd Quarter:
* fumbles at 18.25, puts Gawn under pressure, who kicks it out on the full. This leads to the Hawkins goal.
* at 9.42 remaining he punches back towards two Geelong defenders who would have goaled. Fortunately, Frost is rightly awarded a free-kick for being pushed in the back.

4th Quarter:
* a nice handball out of trouble.
* fumbles but gets lucky when Kelly gets him high. And an example of how misleading that 100% DE stat is, his next kick goes to a contest and Geelong bring it back. Yet they've called that an effective disposal.
* a short careful kick to VDB that VDB then turns over and the commentators claim the play is too slow. It leads to Tuohy's goal.
* makes up for the last slow play with his next kick that opens up the game in the corridor.
* panics and gets lucky. Is tackled and drops it but not called holding the ball.

One thing I did get from re-watching this was just how good ANB was. He was everywhere. His tackling and chasing set the tone in every quarter.

The commentators are unsurprisingly wrong there. It was clear we were slowing the game down as much as possible when we had possession in the last quarter. Chipping it around to get to the wing. Vanders play on (to Jetta I think) was just crazy. 5 goals up there's no need to take risks

No he hasn't.  Will not chase, will not put pressure on the defense to keep the ball in the forward line.  There is a good reason he is already playing at Casey....and not the first time this year.
