WJ did you put in the leg work yourself to track all the trades? Great work if so.

The trading period always seems pretty benign until you see that this year the vast majority of the picks between 10 and 50 have changed hands at least once. Some of the have really been for a few spins around the block.

Poor old pick 62 went from Brisbane -> Geelong -> Sydney -> North -> Melbourne.

Streamlined. Maybe peeps can add the father/son and academy prospects in brackets beside their suitor's' next likely current pick required so we can get an idea of clubs still looking to upgrade. Also, broadly - such upcoming requirements for 2019?

It's been said that clubs can still trade picks in the coming week or so - does anyone know if that includes futures?

Future first for us will be projected at 16 or so. 23 plus 16 are worth more than 5. Is there still a coup left in us for 2018?

I feel that with live draft trading and all the permutations re. high-end SA prospects and interstate basket-cases at the front end of the draft we could be in for a crazy draft night. And we've shown that we've been ahead of the game as to draft alterations before.

It seems that trading of picks continues for a month:  Friday, 16 November 2pm: NAB AFL Trade Period closes (for exchange of selections only).  Can't find anywhere that future picks are excluded so I would assume they can be traded as officially we are still in the trade window.

However, I'm assuming future picks cannot be traded during Live Pick Trading at the Draft.  But who knows...

Only part - during the finals but I took the post trade numbers from the afl site.

As has been mentioned, there will be more changes to come and also, the clubs will have different numbers of vacancies so many of the later picks will change.

Future picks

Clubs may trade future draft selections. Clubs must only trade selections from the following year's draft.

Thanks for that WJ, using your "Ins" from that post, I said I'd add the outgoing future picks to balance the ledger and provide the full context and AFAIK here's the current state of play prior to the conclusion of pick trading and live trading on draft night (the outs don't have the deal status).

The above table is a clearer version of Fifty-5’s update for 2019 draft selections. It shows that Collingwood and Essendon have sacrificed next year’s first round picks in much the same way as Melbourne did last year to get Jake Lever.

If those teams perform well in 2019 then losing those picks won’t be a complete disaster.

I think the Hawks have used their future picks well to secure their current needs. GWS are well set up for next year despite their salary dumping this year.

FWIW, Melbourne might have a first round pick this year.

Just for interest - here is a list of the Academy and F/S players in the draft and where some pundits have them.

I've seen some mock drafts with North's Tarryn Thomas going in mid 1st round.

With all those 2nd round possibilities, I can see our pick #54 going up the draft to the low 40's and pick #62 up to the low 50's - pick #53 perhaps ?

All media seems to list the following 5 draft picks for us but we've actually got 6 primary list vacancies so we have another live pick in round 6 after 91 if we want go to the maximum of 40 on the list.  Who knows what number it will actually be after all the Academy, F/S and other clubs fill their list vacancies and don't use late picks.  Alternatively if we go to the minimum of 38 then 62 or whatever it becomes will be our last pick.

I’ve never been able to master a complete understanding of how the bidding system works for f-s/academy picks. Let’s say a club nominates Toby Bedford at 31. Do I take it that if we bid for him, we would have to then give up picks worth the equivalent to the points allocated for pick #31? If so, that would leave us having used 23 & 28, taken Bedford and our next pick becomes 91 or its equivalent?

Yes I believe that's correct Jack, we get a 20% discount on the points at the pick he's selected.  And you also may get "change" from the picks we use.

One important recent change is that you can only use picks that correspond to list vacancies byou have.  This stops clubs using 7 picks in the 40s to match a 1st rounder when they only have 3 list vacancies.  If we do use say 54 and 62 on Bedford and want to fill all 6 spots we'd have 2 picks after 91.

One implication of the above is that you have to go into points deficit the following year if you can't match with list vacancy picks from this year and that devalues your next year picks which is highly undesirable.

Pick points go to zero at pick 74.  An interesting scenario is if a team bids on Bedford at pick 63 just after we use 62. Pick 63 is 112 points and pick 91 is worth nothing so we'd have to go into 2019 points deficit.  We don't want that to happen so I think that means if we want Bedford we have to take him at 62.  That sounds fine to me but could get tricky in other similar scenarios.

I think Bedford will be bid for somewhere in the 30-50 range, otherwise we wouldn't have done the pick swap for 28 with St Kilda.

Nice Prep Jock...  you love this club.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
