Does this thread mean we can 'take the lid off' now!?

after the last fifty odd years you have got to enjoy it while you can

Sorry for thread but for the first time in 12 years I get to discuss the 1st week of finals!

Looking likely to be a home game against hawks or Geelong. Who would we prefer. Any footy analysis out there care to share.

Trying to work out who I want to win tonight, swans or hawks. Hawks losing almost gives us the g. Collingwood hopefully gets done but looking at freo one would think not!

I'd love to avoid the Hawks.

The only finals teams I fear are the Hawks and the Tigers. Everyone else can bring their best and we can take it.

Geelong scare me, the only downside to winning tomorrow.

For a brief magical moment there we almost got presented with a rails run but we will now have to switch to the outside.

No one on one sit for us .... out in the death I am afraid

I honestly can see Collingwood choke on the weekend.

Melb v Gws and Sydney v hawks all playing for a top 4 spot.

Means we could have the tigers in a qualifying final week one.

Came so close, but Fremantle's skills are just horrible

I'm sorta happy Collingwood won.  That way we won't have the opportunity to throw away the chance tomorrow.

Was in the back of my mind too. Guess MFCSS lingers a little.

Barring any freak drawn matches in the next 24 hours, it looks like our first final in 12 years will be vs the Giants at the soulless Spotless Stadium or vs the Cats the home of football.

85,000 on a sunny Sunday afternoon would be a fitting return to September action.  I couldn't stomach a twilight fixture in front of 10,000.

What's everyone else's take on it?

Edit: ladder predictor stuff up

Posted in the non-MFC games thread, but we need to win tomorrow. If we don't, the following looks likely...

Elimination Final vs GWS at Spotless

Semi Final vs Sydney at the SCG

Prelim Final vs West Coast at Optus

A few results that would help would be:

a) us beating GWS (obviously), which would mean an elimination final against Geelong at the G

b) Hawthorn beating Sydney tonight would put Collingwood in our path, rather than Sydney

c) West Coast losing their first final would mean we wouldn't have to travel to Perth at any stage

Watched the first half and was pretty excited.. just seen the scores now and I'm pretty bummed!

Hope we get the pies in the finals at some stage

Almost the Clayton's finals .... yeah we get one but never see them... mind you that could be the easiest thing for us supporters !

If GWS would it definitely be at Spotless or could it be moved to SCG?

I think the AFL recently said they would play any home finals at Spotless, even against the Swans. They played a prelim there against the doggies, so I can't see why they would move a game against us. And if they were going to move it, it would be to the Olympic Stadium (whatever that is called these days), rather than the SCG I would have thought.

Anyway, hopefully that is irrelevant if we beat them tomorrow.

Now that the top 4 dream is dead I REALLY want the cats at the G.

Maxy to slot one from 50 after the siren for the dees to win by 5 points.

Danger gaz and selwood all leave the field crying

It’s just a little annoying that we have to do it at some stinking tub

Basically our potential finals opponents from 5th or 8th will be the same, except for the first round.

If we win we'll probably get:

EF @ MCG vs Geelong

SF @ SCG v Sydney (if S def H tonight)

Or

SF @ MCG v Hawks (if they beat Sydney by 15) or Collingwood (if S def H) or @ Perth v WCE (if C def WCE in QF)

PF @ Perth v WCE  (or @ MCG v Coll/Hawks, if they win thur QF)

GF: @ MCG

That's right.

I hadn't actually factored in Hawthorn potentially finishing 4th via a small win. That would be a great result imo.

We would obviously have to win our first final, but I would rather play Hawthorn at the G than head to travel to Sydney to play the Swans.

Edit: or the pies at the G, I think they are a better team than Hawthorn

Completely fantasy, but here is a dream run to the flag based on current positions, defeating the following teams...

Elimination Final vs Geelong

Semi Final vs Hawthorn

Prelim Final vs Collingwood

Grand Final vs Richmond

One can dream.

From GWS perspective, regardless if they win or lose, they will be playing a final in Sydney Week 1 (either vs Swans, or vs us).

I wonder if that will impact the way in which they approach tomorrow's game?

I genuinely don't understand how people can be so confident about us against Geelong.

I'm definitely not confident about us against anyone, but just playing out scenarios if we were to go on a run in finals.

And ultimately, if we were to go on a deep run, we wouldn't want to be travelling 2 or 3 times.

Agree Cats in September will as tough and they play the G as well as most teams.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
