Is it possible the State Government always expected to "take a bath" with it? Wasn't the idea to build the Stadium as an anchor tenant to encourage development around it?

the State government maybe but I doubt it ... this was the days of privatization and efficiency dividends ... certainly the original bond holders did not expect to lose out.

The stadium was never really part of the  "subsidy" side of the Docklands business case. I will agree however that the movie production precinct was. This has been moderately successful but has always required heavy government subsidy simply because the movie companies play locations off each other for bigger subsidies and tax breaks.

At least with the coming update of the stadium the State Government have admitted it's a straight out A$250M gift. So I assume no fancy bond issues this time around.

I find stadium deals very interesting so DD please give me the benefit of your wisdom. In the US the stadium deals are mainly made public which makes it a lot easier to understand. Here you have to delve into the accounts of the participants or as is usually the case wait for the liquidator's report !!

No... if you check I have always said that AFL clubs will leave poker machines behind as it is in direct conflict with their community obligations.  The next debate is over sports betting and its insidious affect on the game and the young. Of course that is more an AFL level issue.

Ok thanks

Last week we were fauning over some taxpayer funded wedding. ( Some people watched it instead of the footy) and now we are becoming a subset of Disneyland.

Stand up Australia ,this is our national game. We are fast becoming the 52nd state !!!

No we are undergoing an immersive and interactive experience !!

BTW you do know that most of the club songs are rip offs of US military songs. At least Fitzroy/Brisbane have the French National anthem !!

Did you know the Carlton mascot is actually based on Captain America?

Did you know that gas-guzzling, environment-polluting vehicle is actually responsible for 3/4 of the world's global warming?

On another note, the 2019 Demonland banner is ready.

Marvel, or Martian ?

Apparently the AFL are looking into a clear Perspex styled Domed Roof.

Should make Marvin (Gill) very 'appy.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.
