IMO he is working really hard, competes in the air and on the ground. Just lacking a bit of strength and polish 3 1 Quote

Cool story bro Ok I'll say it .. I dont think he will be the player that we expect him to be. He gets easily brushed aside and doesnt impose enough on a contest and take telling pack marks! There, take it as opinion. I don"t think he will make it! I would LOVE to be proven otherwise but just can't see it at this stage! Ok? Edited July 7, 2019 by picket fence Quote
Demon Dude 430 Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 we have to be patient with Weideman. I think the sort of pre season the players were given was not what our young developing players were looking for. looks to me like their fitness/endurance levels have gone backwards this year, when instead it really should be building, year on year. Spargo, Weid and OMac have all had a few weeks off from playing this year and were put through "mini preseasons", according to the club. that's pretty much sounds like that they were out of condition to me. Weid isn't the full package yet, I wouldn't be writing him off until at least another year, hopefully in an improved system. Quote

A la Weideman Yep REAL pity! Juice also had to put up with learning his craft at Sandringham where Sautner was the dominant forward. On the other hand those stats are a little misleading given the high scores that were quite often kicked in those days plus the open forward line. My real concern is that four years in the Weid hasn't had one day out bar a half at Box Hill. Quote

Mickey 4,777 Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 It's funny. When I opened this thread, I fully e expected it to be knives out for Weid. But like all Demonland threads, it opened where I last left it... September 2018. Everyone was singing his plaudits after his final against Geelong. The guy is 22 and a key forward playing in an utterly dysfunctional forward line. Anyone expecting him to be setting the world on fire is kidding themselves. Whether he should be developing in the ones or at Casey? That's a valid question. 2 1 Quote

bobby1554 1,275 Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 Well I suppose he is about to get the chance to show what he has, being our key forward for the next few weeks. Let’s reserve judgement till then shall we. Quote

If I were a forward playing for Melbourne the way it's currently playing I'd spend most of my time cursing the way the ball has come in. You don't reap silk from cows' ears... The other thing I find interesting is why 'supporters' need to spend so much time denigrating a young player who is obviously dedicated to becoming a good player for the Melbourne Footy club. I still recall how long it took Tom Hawkins to come good. Ditto Darcy Moore, ditto the latest Daniher at Essendon. Some of you may have read or heard he gets pretty low after becoming acquainted with the negativity displayed by some 'fans'. Fer crissake, get a grip and stop being so pessimistic and negative. I'm going to write something controversial here. I actually think our delivery to our forwards for most of the year has been fine, but McDonald and Weideman et al have been unable to take strong marks. Today was a really good example of this trend. 5 or 6 times in the first half, McDonald and Weideman got to the right spot, the ball was kicked to them well enough and they failed to take the mark. This often leads to our mids bombing the ball more erratically as the game progresses, because our guys don't take marks when they're kicked to the advantage of our KPFs, so we think may as well try the chaos ball. When I got home, I watched a bit of the GWS/Brisbane game and the marking on a lead or in the contest in that game was poles apart our game. Frost took a couple of really nice marks and Weideman took one on the wing, but apart from that, very little. I'd back Weideman for a few more seasons yet, but would I prefer Curnow? Abso-bloody-utely. 1 Quote

Hellish Inferno 992 Posted July 7, 2019 Posted July 7, 2019 (edited) Forgetting stats for a second He seems to be a reactive player (rather than pro-active) and consistently trails behind his opponent, meaning that when he does need to 'go' he's not able to impact the contest. Is it his tank? Or just the way he naturally has played the game? Mind you, this is a problem that many of our players seem to have... Edited July 7, 2019 by Hellish Inferno Quote
