I don't think you understand the implications of MFC trying to negotiate media rights with 40k members, 200k supporters and poor quality fixture vs a Collingwood trying to negotiate with 80k members, 1m supporters and a heavily favoured fixture. How much do expect streaming companies to pay for each product?

I'd pay $50 per year for simple no frills coverage of Casey games. Live would be good but not strictly necessary.

Don't need commentary but I would like four angled static coverage cameras (ie four streams) that I could swap between as I watched a match.

Not overly difficult in this day and age with excellent cheap cameras. Almost labour free so not much ongoing cost after camera costs are recovered.

If Casey are on free to air I would accept no coverage just so as to keep that part of the VFL deal going if necessary.

Would be great if it included a post game debriefing by the coach or similar

We have to worry about other clubs, we exist in a competition not a vacuum and if we are competing against them for media dollars it will be a TKO/no contest. Media rights must be negotiated collectively, in fact all AFL revenue should be pooled and distributed equally.

It was common practice for quite some time in the early days of the league, not sure when it stopped maybe in the 60's. Anyhow the point is wanting to negotiate media rights individually is a recipe for disaster not just for us but the entire league. Will end up destroying more than a couple of clubs. Theres a reason Collingwood raised this as a (idle) threat several years back and Melbourne never have.

Ive avoided this thread but i remember the Thursday afternoon training at the junction in late August early September as the grass had a whiff of spring, and the cans were on sale. Id pay good money entry if there was a chance of a similar situation occuring.

Elsternwick oval is being redone and it seems like Bayside council would entertain the thought of something so bizarrely attached to their map actually making money. Parking, trams and trains close by. Its enclosed so you have to pay to get in. Cricket and the VAFA seem to have it but it is incredibly underutilized.

Last year we had a discussion about the concept of Spring training as marketed in the US. Would not surprise me if some of the bigger clubs especially Adelaide trial marketed a few nights of twilight training or similar. Throw in some trendy food vans etc and some nice grass to spread the picnic rug and it could become a great evening. Not sure if it would work for the MFC due to support  numbers and we would need a venue. (Then there is the curse/blessing of the extended cricket season which ties up a lot of the prime grounds.)

I respect your opinion - However, as costs in AFL football rise if you cant invest more into your FD department you will fall behind. 

Sadly, 17 other clubs dont care what happened to us in round 23 and those clubs will continue to invest more money into their footy departments. 

Today we are an AFL club committed to increase the spending in our FD. Irrespective if our pokies revenues stay or go - we need to seek alternative revenues. 

Interesting article here from the Guardian about the giant EPL team Liverpool restricting radio commentary of its upcoming UEFA Champions League match to its own club website.

Apparently BBC5 were denied the rights.

The AFL control of match day internet radio broadcasts through its internet site has long concerned me as a precursor to greater controls in this area. Like the AFL the radio coverage via the Liverpool website is free but it is Liverpool commentary only.

One thing you can be assured of is that they aren't doing it for the benefit of the supporter.

I watched Richmond sell a shed load of absolute crap merchandise.  I saw their fans dancing on wheelie bins in Swan St.  We have no natural home for us to celebrate our flag, for our fans to race in and buy the merchandise.  Dogs, Carlton, Collingwood, Richmond, Essendon and Geelong all do, even hawks have Waverly.  Where do we have??  Don't tell me Casey Fields, or I will spew.

If we had a home and a presence, we could build out a brand that resonated in the community.  This would create a footprint on which to build something special.  Add to that on field success (or, at worst, a reduction in the onfield vomit of most of the last decade) and the club would stabilise itself.  A proper base, a proper sense of self, and success would all deliver success (and maybe even a Friday night game).

Great concept. However, it gets raised nearly yearly. One of our previous boards had the opportunity to buy the Lexus Centre prior to Collingwood going there and they didnt. So really we only have our-self to blame. 

Locations are always tricky, and to get universal agreement from MFC supporters - would be interesting. 

I'm not sure what the cost would be - but it clear many MFC supporters want the premiership before they further dip into their pockets. 

Your initiative might be a tad more than stabilising the ship - it might be a total refurbishment of the ship. Which done before a premiership the burden will fall on too few. But go for it - would have my support.

Interesting concept - I wonder how well it will work? I just have this sneaky suspicion Richmond, Hawthorn & Collingwood may not be "sent back to their $hith0les." You probably lucky you posted this on a MFC forum had you posted it on a public forum - some may say - do unto others as they do to you. 

Personally, I prefer to work with all AFL clubs.

With all that said, I do think there are opportunities to further grow our partnership with the University of Melbourne.  They (UofM) are ranked the number 1 university in Australia, and I'm pretty sure have the highest world ranking of our universities.  They have approx 50,000 students, a lot of international students (potential of new members), and a reputation that sees a lot of people wanting to study there but can't get in.

To give you an idea of the Richmond FC/Swinburne program I mentioned earlier, the offer a 12 months Diploma of Sport Development/Diploma of Leadership and Management.  Fees are $19,000 and this year, they are expecting around 80 students (aka $1.52m gross income).  There is a pathway into other Swinburne degrees at the end of it, which is where Swinburne can see an increase in income.

The competition is built on copying others.  Some take a punt by trying to be the "first", sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't.

If we have looked at the Richmond model (in terms of this partnership), and have found a new (to us) way of generating additional income, then I don't see an issue in it at all.

Now if the AFL is prepared to smash the strong clubs over this issue - what will it do to the weaker? 

I'm happy too we can copy the Tigers and align our self with an Educational Institution - I dont see an issue with it either. Not sure its a huge revenue raiser but we are happy to take what you can get. I'm always for improving the welfare of our whole club.

What will it do to the weaker?  Make them be more creative when looking for other revenue streams.

Perhaps you can ask your Uncle Cameron what he thinks?
