"global warming - my grand father had a place on the beach and I thought the green house effect was going to destroy it. Now I realise global warming / green house effect / climate change are a fraud. The seas are not rising"

Wrecker you don't realize it's a fraud - you think it is. You hope it is.

If you know it is, you're deluding yourself.

A short clip of the brilliant self-described Marxist and socialist Christopher Hitchens and his encouragement to resist Islam even though you'll be called "Islamophobic".

He had a brilliant intellect and was very much a man of the left.  He died in 2011, so I'm guessing this was from roughly a decade ago, but his message is more poignant now than ever.

First post I've actually unblocked you on in a long time PD, and it's a good one. Hitchens is (was) amazing.

Worth noting that after September 11 his views on Marxism changed somewhat. IMO after then he sounded more right-wing than most of his other athiest contemporaries at the time, except maybe Ayaan Hirsi Ali. IRRC, and this was a long time ago so I might be wrong here, but I remember thinking he sounded more like a libertarian than a Marxist in some of his writings.

Wish I had sound on this computer to watch your clip.

His debates really are something else, you can find a lot of them on youtube. I used to stream them on one pc screen while grinding mmo currencies on the other. Made a tedious task much more enjoyable. His wit is remarkable.

His back-track on waterboarding is one of my favourite pieces of anyone ever, I think in Vanity Fair. After saying it was fine to use (this was at the height of the Bush administration), he volunteered to be waterboarded to prove it. He immediately changed his mind after the experience, saying that it was indeed torture. The man could admit when he was wrong, and IMO should be highly respected for that. There was a video of the experience on youtube a while back, not sure if it's still there.

I don't agree with you about Hitchens. He lost me totally when he caved in to the catastrophic lies about Iraq. He may have changed his mind about water boarding - any humane person would - but that he reckoned, from the comfort of his whisky soaked armchair, that it was ok in the first place...you get my drift.

He also kept referring to one of the dumbest, most evil idiots to rule the white house, Dubbya - as 'my president'. That to me suggests he had far less brain cells than he's been given credit for.

Maybe he was just good at doing conga-line suckhole training.

The 'my president' thing was when he got his citizenship. I assume he felt it gave him more authority to argue with Americans, given his British accent I wouldn't be surprised if they threw his 'foreignness' at him when he had a go at various issues in American society.

I bought the Iraq lies as well - seemed pretty solid at the time. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

That's what the Aboriginals said. As did the Berbers, the Vietnamese, the natives in the sub continent, and all of the natives of all of America, Africa etc etc.

I would have thought the Pro Dee(mentias ) of the world call 'importation' PROGRESS.

Hitchens never said anything derogatory about Islam. He just explained how backwards and retarded it has always been by pointing out the textual evidence in the Koran and Hadiths.

The actual physical evidence for it is all over the globe,in every miserable country where Islam rules,

You could add parts of Europe to that Sorry list.

Be careful using the 'cuckold' word on this site: I got two points for inverting it regarding one of our esteemed players. Be very careful.

Pity Hitchens never explained how backward and retarded the Bible, the Torah and the Talmud are. Why pick on the Koran? The Koran has done less damage in history than the those other three books...

Hitchens has been very scathing of other holy books as well. He hated all religions with a passion.

I think he wrote a book called "God is not great, how religion poisons everything".

Can't speak for the clip specifically as I haven't watched it.

Not sure the cuckold comment is warranted.

Both Dawkins and Hitchens place Islam as the most dangerous religion.

The cuckold comment is meant metaphorically but is perhaps more how Muslims view someone who supports their power structure, invites them in,pays the bills, cleans up their wars, listens to their whining on Palestine, etc.

All those guys that bring up Vietnam ,korea, or anything to deflect from their ridiculous beliefs and current practises- the people who stupidly think Islam will be happy with a small presence amongst us.

Yeah I think Hitchens even referred to it as a 'death cult' (going on memory here, been a whilst since I've read any of his stuff or watched a debate/interview).

I reckon you're panicking about nothing on Islam TBH. People have panicked about every new group that comes here. Oh noes! Their values are different!

It all gets diminished within a generation or so.

Treat everyone like a human being and they'll have less reason to rail against society. Excluding them just justifies further action on their part.

What are you gonna do? Export 600,000 or so Muslims? Stick them in internment camps?

You seem to think that there's this monolithic threat to our society called 'Islam', and every single subscriber to it is at least at risk of radicalising themselves into a threat. It's simply not the case. Like any religion you have a spectrum of people who follow some bits and ignore others. I'd say its a given that all religious belief involves the cherry picking of some pieces of text that one agrees with whilst ignoring others. Plenty of cherry pickers on the Muslim side have ignored the terrible bits of their texts, as other religions do as well.

Just because they believe some stupid cap in an ancient book doesn't mean we can just ship them out. If they ACT on some of the stupid (and illegal) crap, then the criminal justice system should deal with them.

Personally I think anti-vaxers are a bigger threat to our society than Islam. Can't really stick them on a boat and send them back to where they came from now can we?

Personally I think Tony Abbott, Corey Bernardi, Pauline Hanson, Malcolm Turnbulldust and our obsequious obedience to the barking dogs in the USA, like Trump, are a much bigger threat to our society than Islam.

lol fair enough.

Still, can't exactly export them can we.

Bernadi annoys me. Won an election as a Liberal and then breaks away. 6 years he has a seat. If I was in his electorate I'd be really angry.

When you read this type of contribution you quickly realise how inadequate some people are in a particular discussion.  You realise they've never taken the time to familiarise themself with the issue at hand.  They are so ignorant on the topic it's little wonder their political persuasions take over and they simply take a side.

Personally, I'd be embarrassed to exchange views on such an important topic when I was so clueless as to the actual issues.

We're importing people from middle eastern countries where their citizens overwhelmingly support stonings, FGM, death to apostates, honour killings and a creed that states they should be governed by Islamic Law (sharia), which treats women as chattels.  A political and religious ideology that states they should eventually turn their host country into Islam.

Yet you think "the anti vaccine brigade is more dangerous" ?  And that they just have "different values" ?  FMD

I'll set you a challenge.  Fix the sound on your computer, study islam, i.e. the Qur'an and hadiths, and listen/read views that annunciate why Islam is a danger to the West.  Not views from crackpots, but considered researchers and those renowned as having credibility.  Learn about Mosques and what happens within them.  Learn about Israel and why the middle east wants it extinct.  Learn how toddlers in Palestine are brainwashed into wanting to kill Jews from the moment they can speak.  I'll give you a month.  And if you come back with the same view having studied assiduously (and can prove it - I'll know by our conversation) I'll be shocked.

Notwithstanding I'm on ignore and you can't see this :)

Oh, and for the record, I've been banging on about Islam and its danger for years.  On a scale of 1-100 Hitchens' views rate about a 1 on my influence scale.

Ironically, ProDee, it's the other way round. But you'd know, Greg Sheridan has told you so because his mate the Israeli Ambassador told him so.

I'd much rather rely on what Ilan Pappe, Schlomo Sand, Miko Peled and Norman Finklestein and the ex IDF group 'Breaking the Silence'  tell me about who hates who first in Israel and the Occupied Territories,

You, no doubt, would classify all these dudes as 'self-hating Jews'.

SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
