Lots of talk around us targeting an experienced player to come in and help develop and boost the leadership of the side on field before transitioning into a coaching role, i personally believe one of the best options for this going around is Boyd,

All Australian this year, would re-enforce the back half and provide a steadying influence and leadership down there that we're desperately lacking

He still hasn't re-signed with the Dogs for 2017 and there was talk from his manager that the offer on the table has been pulled at this time, if they can't reach an agreement i personally feel he'd be a fantastic get for the club, if he wanted to go around again.

I don't mind the idea of boosting our leadership but i think we need our young mids to play as many games as possible together to get to know the habits of one another and really ingrain what we want them to do, and i worry someone like Scotty Thompson might slow that slightly by taking the spot of a young guy, where Boyd could easily play down back and allow someone like Salem to move into the middle

While I agree he would be great, how many HBFs do we need? We have Hibberd, Melksham, Hunt, H (if he comes back).

Fully expect that he will re-sign with the Doggies, and wouldn't say no. But unless H retires I think it's the one position we aren't looking to bolster

I'd argue that Boyd is a better HBF player than any of those guys, so it improves depth, Hunt holds his spot or moves onto a wing, Hibberd same thing i think it'd be okay

I agree he is better than those players, but is it worth using the resources required to get him for a couple of years, or further developing our own and using those resources I.e cap space,  on more pressing needs.

I think so, if the club thinks the leadership needs boosting, he's an All Australian quality player who would come on the cheap and play the same role that won him the AA jumper for us, Hunt and co would learn heaps off him and he'd improve our side.

You make reasonable points. Would definitely not be upset with him coming across, and he may be the best of the bunch in regards to leadership and playing form

If Hunt, Wagner, OMac and TMac Frost, M Jones and Stretch, all develop again like they did this year, Salem gets fit and thrives, another player like ANB becomes AFL ready, and we add Melksham and Hibberd - then surely another half-back is no longer an urgent need. I rate Boyd very highly, but I think we have moved past bringing in a mature 200+ game player from another club.

From outside the current list we need 1) an outside runner with pace and skill, and 2) someone to help out Gawn - rotating through ruck, forward and the bench.

From inside the current list we need a huge leap in leadership development. I know this point might sound like it contradicts what I say above re Boyd, but we need leadership DEVELOPMENT, not leadership ADDITION. It is internal, cultural leadership that is needed, that is active and effective in big moments in close games.

Pretty sure i read that he is about to sign a 1 year deal with the dogs.

I read the same thing, but his manager said that Boyd had basically agreed to a deal and then it was pulled and they were going to re-visit it after the season, so obviously it depends on how all of that plays out, but if he leaves he'd have to be considered if we're set on bringing in an experienced player.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
