just shadowing Red scribblings really

Hibberd is supposedly coming to us for a second round pick....my Gos says that it is not fixed what that pick actually is...i.e, not necessarily the one we have now.

All my son's mate is prepared to say is  its not the song and dance some would suggest. Hibberd is gone. I dont think Efc have that much leverage this time round ;)

My mail is after Hurley, Hooker etc and Watson to come, the Bombers had to offload someone and Hibberd is the one. We made an offer to him and Bombers declined to even match it, in either years or amount. That is why there is such love between the parties. This is a unanimous deal, with ex club and player happy.

70K a year less at Essendon. They offered a trigger clause to activate a 4th year.

Just enough to make him feel unwanted and financially disadvantaged.

And just about the average worker's yearly salary.

My thinking is we only need a halfway ok 2nd rnd pick. Efc are in New turf here.

Tis warm and fuzzy stuff

So we don't have a first round pick and we are going to trade our second round pick as well, wonderful. Or are we trading a player for a second round pick?

Whatever, we always seem to get shafted, we don't fight hard enough and seem happy to pick up GWS scraps.

We haven't started wheeling and dealing yet

I reckon he would want to prove something.

Efc have figured they can Moneyball some players. The trick is only a few.we tried the lot

My mail is if they can get to 9-11 in 2017 then all is good.

You're a bit of a wet blanket at the moment, Dante. Calm down, please. Thank you.

And therefore one less year he has to work for the average worker's salary after footy.

These are the sorts of things professional football players would have to think about if they've got any sense.  The extra 70k would make stuff all difference to their existing lifestyle, but has massive future implications.  That's why I'm hesitant to ever refer to footballers who seek good salaries "greedy".

Not at all, I just get sick of us going after second tier players and paying top price for them. I'm not sure what Hibberd is like but I don't see us fighting off competition and like Melksham I get the feeling that Essendon are not happy to lose him.

We seem to continually go after players like Dawes, H, BenKen, Michie and Newton who are not quite good enough. Which of the players that we've drafted, apart from Tyson and Frosty, over the last 5 years have been regular players?

There are others that have simply been horrendous, like Byrnes, Gillies, Terlich etc. that are either gone or are about to go.  We don't do well on scraps and that's all we seem to want.

I believe Bernie won last year's B&F.

You may not have noticed but when we were winning 2 games a year with a percentage of 50% we weren't a destination club.

Even though we have improved our attractiveness, we don't have a lot of currency to trade this year.  We traded our 1st rounder to get Weidemann to the club who has now had a pre-season and 3 AFL games.

We can make further incremental improvement with Hibberd and natural improvement in our young players and play finals in 2017.  We can land a "big fish" to ice the flag cake when the time comes in a couple of years.

Yes I forgot Bernie and would have to say I was really happy when we got him because he was quality, however, what about the other ones I mentioned, how do you think they've gone?

As for Weed, I don't consider any part of my post referred to swapping draft picks for draftees, it was all about trading draft picks for average, at best, footballers like some of the ones I mentioned. I understand that we had to use this years number one selection for Weed but I question using our number 2 as well.

I understand that we haven't been a destination club so we won't attract top liners and under this circumstances we should be looking at better options in the draft. I don't mind BenKen but I understand that he's going to struggle to get a regular game with us and Michie and Newton have hardly fired a shot in their time with us, Dawes cost us a top pick and he's been injured most of the time he's been with us. It was known that he had issues before he was drafted by us.

Hibbered is 26 - 27 so when we are in a position to challenge he will be on the verge of retirement, unless he is an exceptional athlete and can continue in to his 30's, is he worth a top 30 pick, is he better than what we would get in the draft, a player that may have 10 years with us, or not.

There's no evidence of that. And if a big fish did nominate us, we'd find a way to get the deal done.

Amazing that the price for Hibberd with his 80 odd so-so games (none for over a year), is about the same as what we paid for Vince (a former B&F winner at Adelaide). All you need is one bad decision (ie overpaying for Melksham last year), and that becomes the new normal.

10 wins 90+% is more attractive than 2 wins 50% - I'm keen to hear your argument against this?

We don't have a 1st round pick, our 2nd round pick is destined for the Hibberd trade and we don't have any players with obvious value that we'd be prepared to trade, therefore we don't have a lot of currency to trade.

There's no evidence of a high profile player nominating us as a preferred destination, hence you can't say that we've improved our attractiveness.

Collingwood don't have a 1st round pick yet are gunning for O'Meara. There's always ways of getting the deal done, but you have to land the fish first.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
