Why would it be at Etihad?

Imagine if they scheduled it at Simmonds Stadium, it would be the ultimate insult. :/ Lucky the stand is being re-built, so no finals there.

I would actually love to go down there for a final. I went last year when we won and it was such an amazing day.

I don't want to jump the shark, but, buoyed by yesterday's performance and with the slimmest of chances, the possibility of playing finals footy is here!

North Are bobbing in eighth spot like a WA surfer as we circle below. They face three top three teams on the run home! We, on the other hand have Two very winnable games against Port and the Blues, and a finale to test our true worthiness against the cats.

Believing our cue was back in the rack, an ember has been unearthed. I'd love it to burn wild and clear the road to finals. I read earlier the 87 comparisons and I look forward to watching this unfold. Burn Dee's Burn!

People need to have a little common sense here. We were always going to win a game or two that we didn't expect (ie. Hawthorn) and lose a game or two that we didn't expect (ie. Essendon and St Kilda x2). I've long thought we'll get 10-12 wins this year. At this stage, it looks like it'll be 10-11. I think we're more likely to lose narrowly to Port, lose to Carlton and beat Geelong in Geelong. There's no way we'll play finals though.

The played and coaching staff need common sense. The fans are allowed to dream as much as they want!

In all seriousness, momentum's a funny thing, particularly with a young group. If we beat Port and Hawthorn beat North, you watch the media jump all over it. Even if we could take it to the last game it would be bloody exciting.

Wouldn't have mattered, the kick was after the siren, the clear free kick we got screwed of killed us there

The official score has us losing by 5 points, which means his point stood, which means if he'd kicked a goal it would have been a draw.

The Essendon and West Coast games are equally, if not more, disappointing in terms of losses we shouldn't have had.

Probably not, but if St Kilda win two of their last three and North lose all their last three (very possible) they will be equal on points.  North's percentage may save them however.

Even after today's percentage boost they're still 15.4% behind North. I don't think they are going to make that up. They have to beat Sydney.

North, though, is a good chance of losing everything from here, so the chance is certainly there (theoretically also for us and Port, given the smaller percentage gaps).

If St Kilda lose to Sydney, Hawthorn beat North and we beat Port, yes. But we're playing the youngest side in the comp. Momentum or no momentum. This isn't the 1980's. It's a completely different kettle of fish.

I didn't think they would, but unfortunately, due to St Kilda's win today, they're going to finish ahead of us. They also have Richmond and Brisbane to come.

All of the stuff I've bolded is reasonably likely to happen.

Look, I'm not saying we're definitely playing finals. But if I had to do my footy tipping for the rest of the season now, I'd tip us against Port and Carlton and tip against North for the rest of their games. Now obviously getting the points in Geelong is going to be bloody tough. But anything can happen on the day. And even taking it to that final day would be a lot more fun than anything that's happened for a decade.

Stretch's behind wasn't counted. We were 5 points down before his kick.

The issue in that game wasn't the end, it was that we drew level 10 mins into the last with a 7 goal wind and didn't go on with it. I reckon it was a bit of a choke - not believing we could beat a top side. I feel like we've dealt with that issue now though!

Can I imagine the ultimate fantasy where we win out last three, North lose their last three, we slip in by the barest of % decided in the last quart of the last game...

Meanwhile, Hawthorn falter a little more, only winning one of their remaining three games, and all four of Sydney, GWS, Gelong and Adelaide go ahead of them on percentage.

Which would mean, Melbourne (8th) would play Hawthorn (5th) in an elimination final.

Total fantasy land, but if I was writing the script that's how it would go.

Geelong don't look much (aside from Dangerfield) today.

Freo leading WCE by 8, almost half time. Eagles only 8 points ahead of Saints with Haw, GWS and ADEL to come. Unfortunately 3 games and percentage ahead of us. Our game against them could have been a missed opportunity to (potentially) claim 7th and play the Dogs, what a game. Oh well fantasy now ;)

If we don't make the 8, i'd be pretty happy for StKilda and the Kangas to make it. [censored] the boring away game eagles. what a waste of a finals game they'd be at the G

We do have a lot of unfinished business with those sewer rats

And then win the final and put an end to the whole fourthorn crap!

It's not going to happen, but it's a hell of a lot better to talk about at this point of the season than who we are going to draft in November.

I dare say the players would be all over this. (Being a mathematical chance of making the 8) Obviously they'd never admit it publicly.

But it at least means there's another incentive to perform well these last few rounds. Ending the season with a wave of momentum would be massive for the club. Imagine the hype over pre-season and what that'd do for the membership tally?

In terms of finishing the year strongly and what's at stake, playing finals (this year) is the smaller picture. Really hope the team puts on a show for the rest comp over the next month.

Yep. And have you looked at those three teams across the final rounds?

That hurts, then.

All year I'd assumed that was a lost opportunity for 2 points, not 4...

And Ricky, I agree with you. We should have gone on with that game but mentally we weren't good enough to finish the job.

Could call it an 8 point turn around... We were royally screwed that game and it is North wobbling

I hate that St Kilda are a game ahead of us. Will vomit if they make the finals.

They beat us twice. Only ourselves to blame

But yes i feel your anger

Just did the ladder predictor.

We beat Port by 5 goals

Carlton by 10 goals

Geelong by 2 goals.

AND

St.Kilda lose to Sydney.

AND

North lose :

Hawks by 2 goals

Sydney by 2 goals

GWS by 2 goals.

We make the 8 :roos:

Email this to the club.

The more I think about it the more [censored] off I get.

two games will have cost us a place in the finals.

How the hell did we lose the Essendrug game and that poor result against the Eagles.

If we had won those we would have been up to our eyebrows in the race for spot number Eight.

Oh well three good games to go and then roll on 2017.

To be honest, I think just missing out on finals will be better motivation for us going into next season, than coming 8th and getting smashed in week one of the finals, which is the most likely result.

I want to make finals and win, not make up numbers.

I know finals experience is very important, but it can be really damaging getting there only to get smacked. Just ask Richmond.

Yes Wiseblood better than drafting discussions.

I might be mistaken but it is seventh of August and there is no drafting thread.

That must be a decade long record broken they quite often started in May.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
